Having lived in Drexel Hill for lo, these 25 years, I've seen many businesses start up...then shut…read moredown. For whatever reason, we just don't have many flourishing business areas. So, I was very surprised to hear about Sojourn Yoga, which is in that center next to the trolley tracks, by McGillicuddy's and The Wave. It's been there a little over a year, but I somehow never noticed it. I only recently decided to give yoga a try--I had attempted at least 6 years ago but never really got into it, thinking it was too easy and boring. I picked Sojourn mainly because it's literally 5 minutes from my house--and if you're from this area, you know how unique that is. I can't really think of any other fitness studio (barring dance studios) that are actually right in DH and not a 15-20 minute drive away. Anyway, I took the Sunday morning Flow (aka vinyasa) class, taught by owner Liz. She was super friendly and welcoming and addressed all my concerns. They have a few mats to borrow if you don't have one, like me. A drop-in class is $15, the class cards are cheaper by the class, and there was no pressure to sign up for anything. There are even towels there if you want one. This particular class was heated but not to insane bikram temperatures. It was about 85 degrees which was enough to get some extra flexibility but not so much that my mat turned into a slip-n-slide. Also, the other students in the class were very friendly--it was a pretty non-competitive atmosphere. I left feeling like I got a great workout--it definitely changed my mind about yoga. Admittedly, as my first real yoga class, I don't have much to compare this to, and I can't speak to those who have been yoga for a long time. However, I'd say if you're a beginner, this is a great place to go. I recognized a lot of the poses from dance and other barre classes I've taken, so I think it may be intimidating for someone who is totally new, but the atmosphere here was very relaxed and accepting. There are also non-heated classes and ones that hold the poses for longer, so those would be especially great for beginners. So overall, I'm excited to go back. Parking is metered and quarters only, mon-sat, 9-5. Some of the bigger classes can have about 20 students, so the studio might get cramped sometimes, but my class had only about 7, with plenty of room to spare. The studio is really pretty and a lovely addition to the neighborhood so I hope it survives for a very long time. It's just what we need more of in DH.

In fact, I ONLY take classes from those two teachers. The other teachers were not as great, and in a heated sauna like Bikram, I need the instructor to be really good to motivate me through the exercise. The only reason i'm had to take a star off is because this place started to offer less and less classes! I usually go to the ones at 8 PM at night, but one day they completely took that option off and I wasn't able to take anymore weekday classes. Also the good teachers started to only teach earlier in the day like 12 PM and 4 PM. Though i think now they started to teach evening classes again. Again, I go to Yoga for the teacher and at this studio, there were only 2 in my opinion ( I have tried about 8 teachers from this place) Go give it a try! and try to get Diane

Ok I'm done with the garden imagery, promise. I had a free 1 week pass and had been looking forward to checking out the studio, so I checked the schedule and the only class that worked for me was Therapeutic Yoga. Not my fave, but I figured, whatever it's free. Checked the class description and it seemed like a restorative class, nothing special. I tried to call to get more details but no answer. Well, I got there and they said not only do they not let you use the 1 week free pass for this, but no, there's no way I would have known that, and it's $20. Hm, ok. They ended up giving me a $4 discount for my troubles, but $16 is still way more than I would pay for a yoga class. Plus Therapeutic Yoga ended up being VERY restorative (mostly just repositioning bolsters and blankets) and not very much yoga/exercise at all. I was disappointed but didn't let it stop me from going the rest of the week, and I loved the rest of my week there. PROS --Free Intro week (you can print a coupon, or they have them there). --Free mat rental --Clean, nice, large room --Great teachers-I really enjoyed Mark's class and Brittany was great too. --$8 dropin for some morning and lunch classes CONS --They do a lot of prenatal/child/teen yoga classes, which is great for them, but limits the amount of classes I can attend. --This may not be a con for everyone. but difficulty-wise I would place them below Dhyana and Philly Power, slightly below/on par with Maha, and slightly above Shanti Shala Yoga. The Advanced Class with Mark was like a regular class at Dhyana. Overall, great studio, and I have been recommending the Intro week to a lot of people, just wish there were a bit more of a selection for classes and that they were a bit more challenging. Also, the whole, special paying classes not listed on the website thing was really annoying, so watch for those.

I committed…read moreto doing it, went online, found a location close to where I would be working today & signed up as a drop in. I have never ever taken a yoga class before so I signed up for a beginner class and I honestly don't know what I thought it was going to be.....but this wasn't it. First, I couldn't find the place. The gps kept saying arrived - but I didn't believe it because it kept taking me to a shopping center. I saw Kohl's, PetSmart and BurgerKing - no way would there be a yoga studio here. But there it was right next to the Spirit Halloween store with a sign as big as day. Ok so all that farting around looking for the place made me late. I walked in literally 3 minutes before the class started. I ran into a young woman who asked if she could assist me. After explaining that I was there for my first class and apologizing for walking in at the zero hour she told me she was the instructor and that she would wait for me while I changed. Ok - so far, so good. (For me anyway, idk about those 13 other people who had to wait for me) The studio is very clean, peaceful, spacious large windows covered with blinds to set the mood and a corner with mats, blankets, blocks & eye pillows in case you forgot yours. This is where it got a little confusing for me. I thought I would get a workout, I thought someone would correct poses & posture, I thought I would break a sweat or at the very least get a killer stretch. Nope, none of the above. The instructor was sweet and did say this was a beginners class which is what I wanted and she stated that she was pregnant and would be going slowly. Ok, all that's fine - but I'm sitting here wondering what I got out of that one hour class, did I do yoga? Or did I sit on a mat inhaling? On top of everything, $15 for a drop in seems pretty expensive when most other places charge between $7 and $10. I don't know if I'll be back. I kind of want to try a different instructor but am worried that if the class is like this one was, I'll be turned off to yoga. But at the same time, I don't like writing poor reviews and they offer so many classes that it could have just been a one off. There were 13 other people in that room so there is a really good possibility that it was just me and I probably just need more than just breathing.

When I walked into the space, I realized instantly that it was heated - ruh roh! It had been a long time since I last took a heated yoga class and I was a little bit nervous. Then, we were told we would be experiencing a 60-minute power yoga. Power yoga?! Now I was really sweating and not just because of the heat! In hindsight, I'm glad these two elements were a surprise because I may have been too intimidated to sign-up had I known. Happily, Ang's laid-back attitude and casual conversation at the beginning and throughout class really helped me relax and get into it. I really liked the background music as well. It was a mix of folky, new age-y meditation music and it was just perfect for setting the tone of a non-judgemental and fun practice. An hour flew by and I was sweating like crazy but I enjoyed every second! Sometimes my mind wanders in yoga classes and I find myself thinking, "When will this be over?" That never happened during Ang's class. I think the hour length was just right. Though Conshohocken is a bit of a hike for me, I'd strongly recommend this studio to anyone nearby who is looking for a relaxed and fun setting for their yoga practice.
