It was Easter Sunday and my elderly mother's water pump to her well failed. I gave her a list of…read morebusinesses and told her to call me after getting quotes. This business was not at the top of the list as I knew them to be on the higher end of the price point, but were a reputable business. This was the first company she called and they came right out. They explained to my freeloading unemployed adult brother that lives there that if they came out the work would be completed as it was on an emergency basis. They were pretty straightforward and they agreed they would complete the work (once the pump is pulled it needs to be replaced immediately to restore water). The total was up around 3700 and my mom had given them a credit card to complete the work. My husband contacted the business as this was a large expense for her being on a fixed income with no financial help in her household, and they agreed to give her a senior citizen discount of 10% and they completed the transaction on her card. They also explained that it would have to be flushed for a while until water was clear before water went through fixtures (there's a lot of sediment). Well, they could've stayed and done this for her but would've charged by the hour and so they explained to my brother how to do it and he agreed he would be capable of this. Thankfully, he's unemployed and has lots of time on his hands and should have been capable to do this for her. Unfortunately, the water was turned on before the flush was completed as discussed and sediment was introduced to the fixtures, causing low water pressure. My brother had called the company complaining of the low water pressure and Paul was happy to come out to troubleshoot. It was at that time Paul reiterated that the flush had to be completed and the aerators were clogged from sediment by failing to do so. Paul had actually offered to flush it himself and clean the aerator, but he was not permitted entry. Based off their diagnostics she also needs a new tank. She was given a quote with 10% and Paul also said that she can work out a payment plan if unable to pay at once. Overall they are a little on the high end but are responsive to emergency calls, helpful and overall an honest company to work with.

The sink needed replacing, so he said a quote would be coming soon. It was at that point that things began to take a turn. Matt came on a Wednesday. By that Friday afternoon I had heard nothing regarding a quote or any additional information, so I called. I got the AI phone answer service "Dane", who is meant to sound real (with computer keyboard clicking and background voice noise) but is clearly not. AI Dane said that someone would call me back. Nothing. The weekend went by, Monday, Tuesday then Wednesday--a full week--went by. AI Dane was happy to take a message and have someone return my call. Only when I told AI Dane to cancel the project did I get a text--not a call--from someone named Chris (was he AI? who knows) saying that he thinks it will be "around $850." After all that waiting I would rather go through someone else. They may do good work--I can't speak to that--but their communication needs a lot of improvement. Update: Chris apparently is real, at least he said so in a text, and said that there were some issues that came up on their side and that they were sorry. Honestly, if a message had just been communicated to me that there were some issues and that that they would be able to get to it the following week, I would have been fine! I am not a jerk. But I do need businesses that make the effort to communicate clearly, which did not happen.

G&C Plumbing's pricing is significantly higher than expected for the work performed. I scheduled an…read moreappointment to replace a kitchen faucet and three shut-off valves; however, I was informed that an estimate could not be provided without an on-site visit. A $99 service call fee was disclosed in advance. Despite being a relatively simple job, the total cost exceeded $1,900. After researching the cost of the faucet from their local supplier, I discovered that the faucet retailed for $280, yet I was charged $1,142 for the faucet and installation. Replacing three shut-off valves was billed at $673. In total, an estimated $450 in parts resulted in $1,350 in labor for what was less than a 3-hour job. I reached out to management to better understand the significant upcharge and was told the pricing reflects a two-year company warranty. That explanation raised more questions, given the faucet manufacturer already provides a lifetime warranty on parts and finishes for residential users, covering defects in material and workmanship for as long as the original purchaser owns their home. I was also told the shut-off valves were not expected to fail within their two-year warranty. The remaining justification was that G&C hires experienced plumbers who provide a professional and courteous customer experience. Is this not what a consumer should expect?! Then I was informed that G&C provides a complete benefit package for their employees and that plumbers are just expensive. Overall, while the work was completed, the pricing felt significantly out of line with actual cost of parts, scope, and duration of the job.

On this day later on she contacted her Realtor and he arranged for a Plumbing company, for as it turned out it was a simple trap blockage in her basement. They charged her $640?, (Woonsocket Average is $250 to $400 with all fees and Labor. and it would be over $900+ (not typical) if they had to snake to the street?. The blockage was just in the house. Earlier I was showing her what to do if her main Hot water tank drain value blew out (like mine did) and water spouted out. Shut off the water supply, open the pressure relief valve which would stop the flow. After slightly pulling on the value it developed some water drops, perhaps temporary?. The plumber said since you (I) messed with it you should pay to have it replaced? I'm sure its only a $20 item, they quoted me $450 to replace it? (that's hysterical and BS! )? I believe he was scamming me...II said no I will replace it myself. I said you should help the 90 year old lady! and he said he would not charge her (I hope he didn't?), I will check. I noticed, my wife as well that the water heater appeared to still be under warranty and the plumber seemed annoyed when she said this! After doing some research it was leaking because of particles and minerals on the seal. There is a method to flush and clear the minerals. So they did not have to replace this pressure valve. So much for the so called Master Plumber in the room! they were simply trying to pad their bill, no question about this! He needs a Plumbing refresher. In any event the unit is still under warranty and they should have just flushed the valve. . When I stopped back in 5 minutes (after emptying the full shop Vac for the plumber, a supporting gesture) there was someone else there that claimed to be the owner and he seems ready to get violent with me ( I am 74 years old).
