I always want to support the little guy (vs. the big box grocer) when I'm able. Old World Deli definitely provides that superb experience. We drove down from Birch Bay to spend the day in B-ham and were directed towards Old World Deli for lunch. One of the best pointers we received. After perusing the wine racks and other foodstuffs it was time to figure out what we wanted. My husband ordered the Niman Ranch pastrami on rye and enjoyed every last bite. I opted for the panini (#13) with proscuitto, tomato, arugula and mozzarella. For a girl who had been eating pescatarian for a month, this was the best reason to splurge. The balance of ingredients on the bread was perfect. The bread was perfectly toasted and crisp but not burnt. The sandwich stayed warm until the last bite; it probably helps that I ordered the half. If you work in the area, consider yourself lucky. If you haven't made it over there for lunch but keep thinking about it, go TOMORROW. I wish Jacksonville had places like this. Maybe one day. This place rocked my socks. When we walked in on a Friday evening, we immediately liked the vibe: "cozy neighborhood joint, live and let live." You know, kids hanging out on the floor drawing stuff with crayons. One or two lone folks lost in their books, oblivious to the 6 French peeps playing an extremely animated Gallic game of Scrabble next to them. Friendly, deadpan staff wearing beards and plaid. Now, onto the food. Ummm yummm yum. We enjoyed: - Veggie muffaletta (see photo posted by kind yelper Andrea). So fresh and tangy, olive flavor explosion. Even approved by my olive-loathing spouse. - Squash soup with Indian spices, rich and satisfying - Piping hot corned beef sandwich - German potato salad with sauerkraut, kale and some kind of delish bacon; a nice palate-teaser when eaten with the above - Shortbread cookies, smooth but not too sweet, made with cocoa nibs and tart cranberries. This is a fine place to have lunch. I had the banh mi sandwich special, and it was mouth-wateringly delicious. I would order it again, even though there were many other choices that looked great too. My wife had the grilled cheese panini, which was made with some fancy-pants cheeses that knocked her socks off. It was accompanied by broccoli soup that she slurped down post-haste. Kid had the kid's grilled cheese and liked it. You order and sit. Then they put your food up on a counter and call you up to get it. Seating is ample, though not cozy. I had almost given up in the sandwich department, avenue is great but not the bread i wanted. Port of subs to me is essentially a subway or quizno's not to special. But this lunch combo I just paused from eating to write this immediately has never been more right. I like the atmosphere of this deli, but somehow I have never had a really good sandwich here, though I've tried four or five of them. Generally they strike me as dry, even when grilled. Quality food, convenient to downtown. We eat here at least once a week. The meat plate is a favorite, as is the tuna sandwich. Don't be afraid to try the olives and cheeses.. they have some good stuff in the cases. A bit pricey, but the quality is there to justify it. When we work on the meat plate we always enjoy ourselves, add wine, and sometimes adding cheese, and the bill never adds up to more than we would have anywhere else as enjoyable, plus Old World's better quality. I'd say this is the best Bellingham has to offer in a casual lunch spot. read more

Did the tasting of two hard ciders... one from Seattle and one from Victoria BC. Seattle cider had lower alcohol content and came through with lots of fresh apple flavor. The Victoria cider was served in a glass right out of the dishwasher so the alcohol was pungent and robbed the palate of the apple bouquet. Despite that faux pas, old world deli is generally a great place for excellent gnosh. Came tonight for the first official Yelp event of the year and Old World Deli was a fabulous location to start off the year. I had never been here before and I can't wait to come back for one of their amazing sandwiches. The owner was such a generous host for the event, and I can't say thank you enough for all the wonderful food and hospitality. There was live music tonight and the it was packed, a lovely crowd enjoying the music, some even dancing. I loved how they sold their house cured and smoked meats, which are amazing. A portion of the restaurant was also lined with products they use which was a plus. The owner quickly showed me to the sweet hot peppers used in one of the dishes tonight, very friendly owner. The food, it was all fantastic. We had a meat and cheese platter featuring their house cured/smoked goodies, grilled vegetables, and olives. It had great variety and flavors. The smoked duck breast was my favorite and we picked up a breast on the way out, along with a jar of peppers to stuff with goat cheese as they serve. For our main we had a garlic sausage over green lentils cooked in duck gelee with house smoked bacon, leeks, and porcini mushrooms, delicious! Dessert we finished with a chocolate ganache tart with raspberry: Rich, silky, not too sweet and dusted with cinnamon which was a nice compliment. I admit to you that I didn't get what Old World Deli was about the first time I ate there. I was imagining a Jewish deli in the line of Canters or Katzs, which is not what Old World is about. I was also a little unsure about $8 sandwiches in Bellingham. I can tell you that I have been converted. In general, I avoid sandwiches but Old World has me singing a different tune. You can mix and match whatever you like from a vast selection of meats and cheeses but they also has panini, sub and sandwich specials everyday. I highly recommend the oft improvised specials - one favorite is salami, pepperoni, mortadella, provolone, pickled onion and pepperoncini. I usually go for the half sandwich and salad or soup for lunch. The salad greens are fresh, never bitter, with honest to God pine nuts (I prefer the vinaigrette). I haven't tasted a soup at Old World that wasn't something special. I've bought some fantastic brie at Old World and know of nowhere else in town where you can find jamon serrano. Service is fantastic. Fast, with a smile. The owner(s) are usually there every day with a joke -- they remember your name and the way you like your sandwich. Portions are not large for the price, but that's not what Old World is about. Old World is top quality, something exceptional and different (and usually healthier) with fantastic service. read more

Hands down favorite deli on the planet. The staff is so great- I used to come in every Friday 3 minutes or so before closing, and was always welcome to stay as long as I'd liked. Which I did like, because my sandwich maker was tres' adorbs. They don't play horrible music, and the deli never feels crowded. They have a vast array of cheeses (and meats, if you're into that sort of thing) to choose from, yummy breads, fresh veggies and PICKLED ONIONS. Vegetarian Muffaleta is really, really good- best olive mix I've had, ever. They make great soups and salads as well. My girlfriend likes the beet salad, I'm pretty partial to the potato. And there are often exciting new beers to try- big plus. It's also a fun place to meet up with friends for a wine night. There's a nice selection, and they've got fruit/meat/olive/cheese plates available too. They host local bands and instrumentalists quite frequently, and always feature a rotation of local artwork. I recently enjoyed a sandwich from here while downtown with friends. It was good, but a bit pricey. They have a good selection of meats, cheeses, and bread, of which you can just purchase rather than getting a sandwich. They also have a nice selection of Washington and international wines. They make all the classic sandwiches. Subs, Muffaleta, Pastrami, Reubens, Roast beef, prosciutto, a greek Tuna salad, panninis and grilled cheese. I got a veggie and cheese sandwich and I enjoyed it but could have had more cheese on it. I was disappointed a bit that they didn't have egg salad since that's what I had a hankering for. They also serve soup and salad as well and have a bit of indoor seating. It's worth a shot and is one of the better deli shops in town. read more

This place is terrible. Ordered one of their sandwiches the whole thing came on the heals of the bread loaf, which were so hard and tuff and stale they were basically inedible. I could not believe they tried to get a way with serving this, and furthermore would do nothing to make it right. Stay away from this place at all costs!! Meh... it's OK. Dude working the counter had a long conversation with the regulars that were ahead of me, but could barely muster a "hey....", when it was my turn. The only other word in his vocabulary seemed to be "yup...."; apparently "please" and "thank you" we're just too much to ask. I was in good service for over 20 years, it's really not that hard, just be super cool to everyone!!! Anyhow, food was ok, a bit pricey for the portion size and it was about 80° inside the restaurant. Also, the back areas seemed really run down, even considering it's an old building. By far the best deli in Bellingham. There sandwiches and paninis are made of only the finest ingredients. They really focus on the high quality of food they serve their customers. It is become much more frequent that we grab sandwiches from their shop and head to the park for a scrumptious picnic. We also get all our food from there when we make a charcuterie board.
