I have been collecting coins for a while now. Learning the individual history of not just the coins but, the very interesting information of the history of our country and ita leaders and more. Long story short, collecting is not a get rich quick hobby. There's a lot of intricate levels of analysis, research, and time put into it. I didn't want to sell anything I had but because of current economy inflation in every aspect of life, i thought I'd be able to at least pay a bill with the collection I've had in my family for 30 hrs. I understand I'm not a coin expert or numerist and wanted to get an idea of where I was in my research. Unfortunately after leaving old world coin, I found myself no longer interested the hobby as a whole. The employee that " assisted" me seemed immediately dismissive and annoyed at my approach. He took time to take a glimpse at what I had with a quick snobbish dismissal, almost as tho he was saying I should be embarrassed for bringing them. He handed me most of my collection back saying the were nothing, that " if it were him he'd just give them to a young beginning collector" and that all the foreign coins I had were no longerbin production so they were worthless as well. Which confused me. The entire cyber research on the many apps, books, videos, platforms, according to him are completely inaccurate and lie about price and value. Soviet walked out with 32.00$ having currency of many denominations, key dates, sets uncirculated, etc. In conclusion i found that the reputation and rating of this business was just as misleading as the enticing ruse of the hobby. And as much as im against ai taking our jobs, and handling customer service, the service members at this establishment can probsbly take refresher courses in that area of business ethics. Where do I even start with this horrible experience? I had two transactions here, and both were terrible.Transaction 1: I brought in a couple of 1oz Canadian Maples. The person I originally talked to said, "George handles the gold." Meanwhile, I stood there watching George talk away with his buddy without a care in the (old) world. A lady finally approached me, took the coins to George, and came back with a 97% offer. I mentioned they were Maples because I thought there was a premium on them--and even if I was wrong, I was met with a snippy, "I know what they are and George knows what they are." Gee, thanks for the explanation. Transaction 2: I brought in a large bin my girlfriend inherited from her grandmother. I had emailed them ahead of time(granted a while back) and was told that if we were selling, there was no fee for an evaluation and offer. After my first lovely transaction, the first guy started flying through the bins. He brushed off everything other than silver coins, implying nothing else was worth any attention. only looking for silver coins, he gave zero consideration to type or age--he just based it on weight and spot. He pulled a few aside for George to evaluate, but by that point, I didn't feel confident about or getting any sort of fair deal. so I kept those. Like other reviewers have noted, he claimed all our out-of-production foreign coins and commemorative stuff were worthless, suggesting I just "give them to kids." and they would only give me a couple of bucks here and there for this pile or that, I said no thanks I'm not a crackhead in need of 2 dollars. It was also mentioned a couple of times "we don't like sifting through peoples collections" - one time I quipped "Well, we don't have to". I have been going to Old World Coin for years. They have the lowest premiums for your bullion purchases. They will always offer to have a person buy a 5 ounce bar then buying 5 single bars because it's cheaper to buy in bulk. when it comes to there coins, they use the grey sheet for pricing or paper currency as well. Trisha, Gary, Carl, or Dave are all wonderful to work with and they are always helpful with any questions you might have on bullion or coin. read more

I've done business for a few years with OWC. The parking is easy. There is no sales pressure, as they do not work on commission. I'm primarily interested in bullion and collectible / graded (or "slabbed") coins. They have both. They also have weekly auctions (Saturday, I believe, but call and confirm) and close the counters during that those couple of hours. They have collectible currency (paper, coin), some medals and, of course, bullion. This isn't a baseball card kind of place. If you have jewelry, they will refer you next door to their jewelry shop. If you like precious metals in "round", "bar" or similar format, this shop is for you I've shopped at a number of places, and am happy to both go back to OWC. I also put orders in over the phone. I cut a check and they mail me my goodies. If you are looking to sell your coins or bullion, you should be familiar with State of Illinois law. The State wants to track sales from people to dealers. Dealers want to keep their licenses and stay in business, so don't be surprised if EVERY coin shop asks you about receipts for your gold / silver / coins. It isn't that they are suspicious, it's the law. Call a few dealers and ask them about selling to them. read more

Sent a request for an appointment on Old World Coin website specifically set up for correspondence. On their door is a sign that says they close at 1:00pm and no one is seen without making an appointment. My answer from Trisha was to call on Saturday morning to see if they are taking appointments. Wow....seems if you are in a business that requires the public to come to you, one would be more than happy to make that appointment. Your business must be very lucrative to pick and choose "if you schedule an appointment". Very disrespectful. Personally I would never support any shop that expects me to chase them. I can't say enough good things about Old World Coin and their staff. My ten year old son recently became interested in coins and he begs to go there almost daily. Every time we walk in the door, we learn something new. The staff are very kind and patient with him and answer all his questions. They show him new things and share the history and stories behind the coins. They have a great selection of old and new coins and bills from around the world. We have also begun attending their Saturday auctions and once again, the staff have helped him learn how to participate and bid. My sisters and I inherited many old coins and jewelry after the passing of both parents (6 months apart from one another) and we found Old World Coin to help us. The staff there was fantastic and they spent hours going through the coins and jewelry and even found a rare dime that was worth quite a bit of money. I highly recommend Old World Coin in McHenry because of my experience with them yesterday (7/29/2017). I took in my deceased father's coin collection in to have them evaluate it. I did organize all of the coins in like denominations as best I could. Even so, it took nearly a couple of hours to go through everything. Carl did an awesome job going through the collection and explaining not only interesting historical facts on certain coins and WWll paper money, but explaining the differences in the conditions of the coins that help determine their value. This was not an easy project for me to do because it was my dad's collection and I wanted to do the best I could for him. Carl made the whole experience very easy and I felt he was very honest with his evaluations and explanations. Today, 3/28/19, I stopped by Old World Coin to see about selling 5 NIB Little Rock Central High School Desegregation Silver Dollars. Just asked the guy what he'll give me for them. He unboxed one and checked it out. Then tapped on a calculator briefly, and said $11.50 apiece. With a surprised look on my face I said that was less than the silver value. The sales guy looked annoyed and retorted that the coins were only 70% silver. I thanked him, twice, and left soon after. So you decide. The coins are actually typical coin silver, 90% silver content. Did he lie to me to gain $15. Or is he that bad at his job. That was my last visit to Old World Coin. read more

TERRIBLY terribly RUDE salesperson here. I came in to buy silver bullion and junk silver coins and although I've been collecting silver for several years I had some questions and the sales person was extremely condescending in his answers. I figured maybe hes having a bad day, do I let it pass. I picked out four silver rounds and asked for $100 face value in junk silver, which was over $2000 at that time. I was prepared to spend that much in his store, despite his bad attitude. This rude salesperson went to the back and came back and said no they were all sold out. I understand that, but by this time I was tired of dealing with this person who was so terrible at his job, which is supposed to be customer service. I bought the 4 toz silver only to find when I got home that one of them is marked "COPY" and did not have any mint name, nor weight, nor purity marked on it. M so I went back and this same Rude person was clear lady not happy to see me but he very rudely pointed out that there is a marking on the edge of the coin and that I should not question them because they dont make mistakes there. NOW HERES THE KICKER: he said, "THERES THE DOOR, ILL BUZZ YOU OUT NOW". Throughout both encounters I was very polite and patient, even pausing after each rude thing that he said because I was surprised at how UNPROFESSIONAL he was. I've spent about $10k on silver in the last 2 weeks. I will never go here again. If you're desperate and you go here, bring your own Sigma Metalytics Analyzer and test everything. Where to begin.. I have no idea how these employees were not fired yet. I inherited a large amount of coins. I came in to sell and have never been this disrespected before. They treated me as I was a nobody. I admit I do not have great knowledge of coins. When I would ask a question they would get all protective and lash back at me with rude remarks. Totally uncalled for. It is my merchandise and I had some questions from whom I thought were professionals. Then he thru an offer at me thinking I was stupid. It was a lowball. I served in the military for a few years and saved some money. I invested some of it by having my brother in law buy me gold and silver coins, since I knew nothing of them. I went to Old World Coins today to get an estimate on some of the coins. I told the worker what I was there for and he asked me where the coins came from in an accusatory tone. I told him I didn't know, because I didn't, and I didn't feel the need to explain further with the way he was talking. He talked with another worker and then told me he wasn't interested because I did not know anything about the coins. I explained I had had someone else buy them for me, but he would not listen...continuing to state that having the coins meant I should know about them and implying if I didn't, then I must have stolen them. So, if you want to deal with a prick who makes snap judgements, go ahead and head to Old World Coins! Maybe you're a coin expert and he'll be more accepting of you. read more

Sadly my father passed away. He had a coin collection but we needed to get an idea what something were worth. I have 2 sisters and we wanted to split it up evenly. I called on a Monday and talked to a gentleman and he was very nice. I asked him some questions and he answered as best as he could over the phone. I asked if they did appraisals and how much they charge. He told me $50 an hour but if we are just looking for an idea of what things are worth and it was only about 15 minutes they would go through it for free. My sister and I went the next Monday. When I first went in and asked if they could do it and the one guy behind the counter said sure bring it in. I got my sister and the coins. Now when we went back in a different guy helped us ( think his name was Carl ) very rude! Told us it was $50 an hour. I explained that the guy I talked to said it would be free if it was quick and not in detail. Carl had a fit. The other guy behind the counter told Carl it's ok you don't have to charge them. He was very nice about it. Carl at that time wanted nothing to do with us and couldn't get us out of the store fast enough. He didn't even really look at what we had. Took maybe 2 or 3 things out of one bag and looked at them and nothing else. He say the coin sets but never looked at the coins from the 1800 that was also in that same bag. All I can say is that my sister and I both said we would never set foot back in that place. Very said that we got treated that way. read more
