IF YOUR A NEW PLAYER STAY AWAY. Mixed feelings about this place mostly bad. Events are well priced, and food is sometimes included. I've been to Dean's dugout occasionally for magic the gathering events, and have found myself frustrated multiple times with round times going over because judge/owner doesn't pay attention. I am prompted to leave this review tonight because of an experience I had taking my new friend to a magic the gathering pre-release. My friend was completely new to the game and I asked his opponents before each round if it was all right to intervene and help him remember triggers, explain what cards do, etc. everything was quite nice up until the second round, his opponents were kind and patient, helping him find a love for the game. The judge approached us after the second round to explain to me that I wasn't allowed to intervene with another game. I kindly explained to him that his opponents were completely fine with my intervention. After going back-and-forth for a few minutes, we were kicked out of the event. I went to go talk to the owner to get a second opinion on the matter. He proceeded to yell at us to get out of the store and make a scene in front of all of the players. I never remembered Friday night Magic being so uptight. I wish I could go back 5 to 10 years when new players were invited, not screamed at. WILL NOT BE COMING BACK AGAIN. I have seen ads for this store for many many years and finally made my way down to it. I am very glad that I did. The owners were extremely friendly and I did not feel like I was bothering them you know, while shopping in their store unlike the previous store I visited this afternoon. Almost a year later, and I figured I'd update my review to say that this place is getting even better than it was last year when I first posted about it. Dean and Marilyn, the owners of Dean's Dugout, have cultivated an incredible community that's ridiculously welcoming- Both for children and adults. I come here to play Magic: the Gathering, so I don't have much to say about all the sports-centric things they do, but it always seems like there's something going on here regardless of what sort of thing you're interested in whether it's baseball cards or Dungeons and Dragons. The Magic player base here has grown immensely, and they're starting to put on more events than just your typical Friday Night Magic. (I'm actually a couple hours away from going to a M13 Sunday game day.) You now often need to actually sign up early, as quite recent events have been completely full. Don't hesitate to call ahead if you can't get there early. Seriously though, I've played Magic at tons of different venues in the midwest, Dean's is the best, and is continually getting better. read more

Dean, the owner, is an amazing guy who loves kids and also knows what he's talking about when it comes to collecting cards. I came in for the first time with my 11yo son and he bought a couple baseball card packs. Dean gave him an extra pack on the house and handed him an extra plain silver pack because it was his first time at the store. Super cute family owned business. A husband and wife own and run it together and are very sweet and attentive. I'm not personally a sports person but it was still a neat little shop to walk around in and see all of the sports memorabilia and collectables that they had. My 9 year old daughter and I recently started collecting sports cards. I collected as a kid but stopped more than 25 years ago. I read an article about cards as baseball memorabilia and I decided to dive in! I started out by seeking a local business instead of tossing my money into a big box store. I'd never actually been to a card shop so I tried a few local spots that made me feel unwelcome.. Most of the other stores I visited were staffed by individuals resembling the Simpsons "comic book guy." A lot of places were staffed by employees more interested in demonstrating their collecting superiority..... It seemed that helping a newbie was beneath them..... I stopped by Dean's on a Sunday afternoon and immediately felt at ease. This place was different and hit the mark! Well lit, well organized and without question a top notch business. The store has a great "collector's community" feel. At the counter, various customers were having a discussion with the owners about different sports topics. It was clear right away that this was a quality family business. It took me about five minutes to be on a first name basis with the owners. I quickly became a repeat customer and sometimes head into the store more than once a week. It didn't take long to note how much Dean and Marilyn care about kids coming to the store. My daughter and I have really bonded over card collecting. She is becoming a little expert! This is without a doubt due to their kindness and respect. Her questions were accurately answered and she always leaves hungry for more knowledge (and cards). We have been to Deans several times in the last few weeks. I have a 9yo son who is into hockey cards and pokemon. Dean and his wife are so very nice and helpful. Their prices on new packs of cards are the same at Target and their supplies are very reasonable so why not support a mom and pop shop. This is my son's favorite place to be!!! Dean's Dugout sells a huge variety of sports cards, family games, D&D and Magic the Gathering. The store is spacious and the owners are extremely friendly. They hold D&D and Magic the Gathering tournaments open for all ages and sexes. Their prices are GREAT and very affordable. Whenever Friday I am free, I like to play Magic the Gathering. I have known Dean for over 30 years. I first met him when he was selling baseball cards out of his garage in Downers Grove. I also ran into him often at Comiskey Park when he was the White Sox photographer. I love visiting with him and talking baseball. He and his wife are probably the nicest business owners I have ever known. He is knowledgeable and fair. His shop is a great gathering place for fans of all ages. Horrible place, went in to shop, saw they had 2020 nfl prizm, for sale, this stuff normally comes sealed in a hobby box, it is a 1000-1500 a box, 12 packs of 12 cards, any card shop or online sells this for cheapest 100-110 a pack, deans had it for 50 a pack, so I bought two, got ten dollars worth of cards, then working in the industry, realized why so cheap, a buyer purchases a sealed box, in that box for 1000-1500 you are guaranteed two autograph cards or what most call hits. Ok so person buys box sealed maybe a few boxes, maybe a case, they open a pack at a time until they get the 2 auto cards in the box, ok say you do that in 5 packs that person opens, they will then have 7 un opened packs left, you can now sell those cheap, knowing only worthless base cards and rookies will be left, this is very low down and a dirty business practice, and you can tell it is true first off price, 2nd the packs were not in original box but in a shoe box, and lastly when I confronted them, they said it was even cosigned from another person, now other shops in the area bck, and world champs, they sell this same stuff for 100 pack going rate, keep in original boxes, and sell packs, but they will tell you how many packs are left in box, so out of 12 packs if say 6 or more are left, good shot you still have 50 percent chance or higher of hiting a auto card, high value card, with deans you have no shot at one, why you think it's priced so cheap, then customers get 10 percent off and they charge cosigner 25 percent, so you know this is shady, will never shop there again, not trustworthy people. to avoid this only buy sealed boxes, blaster boxes, hanger boxes, mega boxes, cello packs, gravity packs, all opened hobby boxes are a no no unless you want to play odds and see how many packs are left, it is in original box, and the business selling it is trustworthy, otherwise you are just going to get garbage cards with no chance at hitting anything worth value, moral of story if the price is to low it is a scam, and don't give this place any business. read more
