The pub at the bottom of the road I lived on for a good 14 years is a typical village pub. I don't mean that in the twee, ideal sense of "what a sweet village pub" - I mean village life in the way that villagers know it; simple, unromantic, and functional. There's a sports TV, a quiz night in the darker months, a menu of ok-to-decent food (depending on what you choose - the pasta is normally a good bet), and the drinks aren't extortionate. It's nicer now for the refurb that followed the smoking ban, although both the front and back doors are still often crowded with people huddling from the rain and smoking, so you might still go home smelling of smoke. I'd suggest a sheltered area away from the door but it's right on the road so that would be a pretty bad idea unless you wanted to build a smoking traffic island on a country lane... There's also a beer garden - more a beer patio - out the back in the car park with some picnic benches. The hosts are warm and friendly and the locals are solid sorts; I've known people who've stayed over in the holiday rooms too and found them eminently comfortable. It's for sure my first choice of pub in the village, and not just because it's the closest to my family home.

The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). We spent an evening in the pub, had a meal and then sat playing card games - we felt incredibly welcome. So welcome that we ended up visiting three times in a week long holiday. They had Timothy Taylors Landlord and Best Bitter, Theakstons Best Bitter, Dark Horse Best Bitter, Moorhouses Elslack Ale and Thwaites Wainwright as well as a range of keg beers, lagers and ciders - Heaven!!!

The creamy garlic mushrooms were amazing, the goats cheese peignet with pickled beetroot (for sharing) was delicious, and the pork spring rolls and pâté were met with equal delight. The mains of slow cooked pork belly (with roasts not mash), the steak & ale pie with chips and corn fed chicken supreme were all very well presented and more importantly, tasted amazing. The pork with LOTS of crackling was only let down let down by the lack of Yorkshire pudding (I know, not meant to have it with Pork dinner but I wanted one and it wasn't allowed due to exact numbers being made). The food was washed down with two bottles of white Rioja and followed by some beautiful desserts of chocolate brownie and Baileys Creme Brûlée with cookie. All in all, a perfect Sunday roast and for £122, was pretty impressive. Note: the staff were young but were absolutely honest and professional. It was great to see and they brought the food out promptly and couldn't have been nicer. A great find.

It really was a pleasure to hang around here, despite being ever so slightly chilly (I'm used to the balmy climate of London). The views are awesome, there's wildlife everywhere and plenty of dogs around if you're a dog person. The lunch was in the cruck barn and this is really an. Exceptional building, it looks old despite being only 10 years old! The decor is perfect. Except maybe the projection of the menu, not the biggest fan if that (it was hard to read). The food was impeccable, I had the pigeon and venison and it was perfect, the table generally seemed very pleased with their food so I think everything else was good too! The roast looked incredibly, serious food envy there. The drink selection, as you would expect in a decent traditional Yorkshire pub, was local and very very good. If you're in the area (or even just in the north east) then I would definitely recommend coming here for some food. Beware the roads however, super difficult to drive around.

The pub: Excellent whiskey selection and some really lovely gins. They also had a good bunch of beers and were generally very accommodating. That said, they ran out of lemonade before a wedding, which is pretty poor. And Jaegermeister... The meal: The meal was served in the wine cave, which is beautiful. Generally the meal was excellent, the beef was cooked perfectly and the starter and dessert were good (nothing to write home about though). One thing I noticed was that there were no green vegetables (in a roast!?). Also, they didn't have anywhere near enough staff on, so they didn't take any drinks orders (the pub is over the road). They would have made a killing if they'd done that (and we would have been happier, I really fancied a gin and tonic...) The hotel side of things: The room was lovely, and at the wedding rates it was extremely cheap! Big, beautiful, comfortable, clean, couldn't ask for more. Breakfast was ok, if I'm honest I didn't like having to ask for juice, I was hungover, I wanted all the juice. Checking in was a touch annoying as they sat us down, then went to check other people in who turned up after us, and then checked us in last. Despite being in a rush! General wedding things: The wedding was beautiful. Definitely. But that was despite the many failings, things could have gone more smoothly if they'd had more staff. Like the drinks orders, having the cake ready (the groom had to prompt them) and the tardy check in. Also, they told us the bar closed at 12 and then closed at 1115, which obviously ruffled a few feathers!! Generally, this place is beautiful and I would feel recommend a meal here. The menu isn't massive but everything on it is good. The bread rolls are obviously freshly baked on site and are delicious. The fish and chips with mushy peas is really good as is the sausage and mash. The soup is always good too. It's quite pricey but worth it. The chef also does guinea pig nights where you can go and try out new food for a cheaper price and then review - these are very popular so its worth booking in advabnce.

The pub has been sympathetically restored and added to over the years and yet has maintained its' integrity, keeping many of the original features, a Locals corner, the bull ring ( a game of metal ring swing onto a hook)and a wonderful old beer cellar. I wonder if it still has the claxon for invasion in case of war, in the cellar? There is a great choice of reasonably priced food from the traditional to the avant garde, all beautifully presented and served by knowledgeable and friendly staff. Lunch menu or evening you will find something to tantalise your taste buds at a reasonable price. Locally sourced,meats,fish and breads and all fresh produce. Cosy and inviting with log fires, you can feel the warmth and history the minute you enter, duck your head if tall the door is low. Parking is outside the pub no designated car park but plenty of space in and around the village, just remember that people have to get out of their driveways.
