Whenever I'm walking through Chinatown, I always enjoy walking into Old Shanghai. They sell everything you can imagine and more. When you first walk into the store, you may be taken aback at how much inventory and merchandise one store can hold. Gorgeous statues is what is most noticeable. Such an extensive variety of white Buddhas alone. But they also sell everything from bowls, hair pieces, shoes, paper lanterns to stuffed animals and umbrellas. Great selection of gift items all in one place, and not astronomically priced either. Affordable prices. The staff are usually standing behind the counter, ready to ring you up at the register when you're ready to make a purchase. As well as, ask the price of a statue behind the counter. Parking: I usually walk from my hotel, but they have street parking if you venture to drive through the crowded streets of Chinatown traffic to get to this shop. read more

Now that I have moved from the Bay Area, this is definitely a shop that I miss regularly browsing in. I used to go often during my lunch hour; as a consequence, I was not followed around. (I am certain they have to deal with shoplifters ALL the time; it's a problem in DT SF.) It's a great place to find inexpensive gifts, especially for your friends and family who never find themselves in Chinatown. I especially like their selection of silk purses and matching accessories (wallets, tablet bags, jewelry bags, shoe bags, and many more). They featured a brand named Cherry Blossom that I can't find anywhere else. Also prismatic crystals, the kind you see hanging on display in some stores for $25-50...they are $5 here. read more

Old Shanghai is one of the great gift and art filled novelty item shops in San Francisco's Chinatown. Sure, they have all of those touristy items that some travelers may want but what they really offer is very nice selection of art and Chinese orientated statuary. Plus, they have a lot of very nice jewelry. Seriously, they really have an interesting collection of all kinds of items offered. This is a large shop. It is filled to the brim with all kinds of things. If you take your time, you can really find some unique pieces that you may find nowhere else. This is a popular store. Meaning, during peak hours it can become quite crowded. This is not necessarily a bad thing, this is simply a statement in fact. This shop is always very well-maintained. The staff here is always nice and helpful. So, if you're looking for that Chinatown souvenir or a gift or something you never knew you needed this may be the place for you to find it. read more

Extremely expensive novelty items and the women in the store watch you like a hawk expecting you to steal. It's a very uncomfortable shopping experience. The quality of the items were poor and I was sifting through the long shelf of bowls for a friend and a woman approached me and rudely said have you picked one yet? Well it was taking me awhile because so many were chipped or had blemishes so I was looking for something in good condition. I tried to bargain on the prices and they simply said no. Birthday celebration feast. So many dishes. Was so hungry that i forgot to take pictures. These are remnants after eleven hungry people gathered. They have complimentary seaweed roasted peanuts which is on the table as you sit down. So yummy. Would need a pound or two of it. Per covid this place would be so busy. Now at 50 % capacity. Plenty of parking on street and in their lot. Food was great. Favorites: chewey rice cakes, lion's head meatball, pan fried bun, veggie dumpling perfectly wrapped and notable size of your palm, soup with great broth and pork belly, ears sliced thinly. For the vegetaians this is a great place with bean curd dishes. Since i didnt order i just noticed it came in gravy form, bow tie, shredded. Great dinner and great service. They keep on clearing away empty dishes. Refilling tea. We got cake service meaning we brought chestnut cake to end birthday celebration. Thank you to our mama hostess who treated us. Passed by here specifically for a stuffed panda for a friend. I saw a whole bunch of pandas from the entrance, took a picture, and sent it to my friend. My friend insisted to purchase the military uniformed panda for her, and I did. I thought it was a bit pricy, but I was purchasing it on behalf of my friend that loves pandas. I did notice that the military uniformed pandas had the black fur bleeding onto the white fur. I was very lucky to find one that didn't have that defect. The cashier was friendly. She removed the price tag and was patient as I rummaged to get some coins deep in a pouch I had. The store is pretty big. Lots of Asian trinkets and stuff. Some good and some I definitely think was just dust collectors. Nothing really caught my eye, so I only walked out with the panda plush for my friend. read more

At least say "may I help you," offer assistance or pretend to want to be helpful rather than just blatantly profiling. This may be my new go to store whenever I visit Chinatown. I've been here before but my other go to store is closing. This store has some nice merchandise and although crowded they have alot of stock. They have a couple of floor workers who put merchandise back in its right place or help find and item and possibly watch for shoplifting since there's so many small items anyone could lift. I found some nice embroidered totes and small purses it was hard to choose since the trend is embroidered flowers nowadays, but the Chinese have always had this type.of embroidery and I though it was a fair price. They also have an online store which looks like its tied to Amazon.com and i may look there if i want to get gifts as long as shipping is free Lots and lots of items check it out next time you are in town. Cashiers could be friendlier, but I find that's the culture in any Chinatown I've been too. read more

I'm thoroughly impressed by Old Shanghai. Grant Street is full of tourist traps with largely the same merchandise interchangeably offered from store to store. The prices vary based on stock or how good the owner is at negotiating with the wholesaler. Old Shanghai is a little different. First and foremost, this is a beautiful space. The store is set up with a ground floor with high ceilings and an upstairs which is a mezzanine that circles the downstairs area. Downstairs has a huge variety including souvenirs, art, jewelry and many other items. Upstairs is clothing, furniture and more art - some of the furniture and art is very nice. They have a lot of cool stuff to check out. It's a big shop and you won't feel like you are jammed in and crammed up like you will at some of the lower-end places in Chinatown. I would say that if you are taking a stroll through Chinatown on Grant Street, this is one of the stores you should make a point of visiting. read more

Looks high end. Smells high end. Clean and organized like a high end store. A high end Chinese store that is. This store is like a breath of fresh air amongst the other haphazard looking Chinese stores that line Grant st. and sell "I love SF" souvenirs. None of that unflattering fluorescent lighting either. The first floor has nice merchandise which covers home decor to hair accessories. On the second floor you can find cheong-sams and bigger furniture pieces with Asian flair. Just remember, all of these come at a higher price, plus with the Enya-like music in the background, you'd certainly be at ease in handing over your credit card. read more

I think Lawrence clicked on this shop rather than a nearby restaurant in 2006. There are no soup dumplings here. What is here is a very nice variety of Oriental silk bags, eyeglass cases, jewelry rolls, dresses, pajamas, Buddas and gifts both new and antique of much better quality than most of the others on Grant. I bought gifts for my 2 year old niece and a friend's little girl, qi pao dresses for my Australian mum who loves them and many other things on my last visit. Since I am moving to the Memphis area next week and wanted more qi pao dresses I called them because they weren't listed on their web site. Tiffany Tang sent me photos of several with sleeves and without, charged my credit card and mailed them. I am having them hemmed to retain the trim and will send them to her Monday. This store kinda reminds me of a knock off of Shanghai Tang. They sell the Chinese 'qi pao' dresses and shawls and scarfs which are Shanghai Tang's trademark -- of course, not using the same quality of material that Shanghai Tang does -- and knick knacks and decorations which are of a much higher quality than those other stores along Grant. Of course with the nicer selection also comes a higher price tag and some items run into the thousands of dollars and more. Not sure if I would purchase Buddha heads from this store as you most likely will get same quality at a much lesser price in Asia, but if you're not going to Asia anytime soon and you want some relics, then this will have to do. A refreshing store amidst the other nickel and dime ones in Chinatown. read more

Yes the stuff in this store costs more than the plainer trinket shops in Chinatown. What you are really paying is ambiance. Everything in this store is neatly arranged and fancy looking. I came here to buy a kid's outfit for international day. The clerk was very nice about helping me measure the outfit (I did not bring the kid here) so that I know it will fit. They don't accept exchanges so it's important that the outfit is big enough. They deducted $2 off the outfit because the elastic on the pants were defective. Overall, I'm happy with what I got. read more

Used to be mu favorite store to shop at when visiting S.F. but after to ight I will no longer be giving my business to them. We walked into the store 15 mins before closing and were immediately told "we're closing," I them politely asked if they meant in 15 mins or now. I was them told by the woman "no, now," then 2 other women from the back loudly laughed and said that they were closing.. as I turned to walk out the woman before the counter said "yea, get out!" This place has almost the same price as most of other stores when it comes to Chinese theme items, except they are nicely laid out. I like coming hear to pick up wine bottle holders, Chinese coasters. They have classic look, well built, durable and useful. I also like the upstairs where they carry different silk bedding. It's very popular to use silk with pure cotton blankets in Hong Kong. While they don't carry the blanket, the covers are nice and with many beautiful patterns. I like strolling along shops like this on a weekend afternoon, it's relaxing and almost walking through a mini museum with old school stuff! read more

Definitely one of the must-visit shops in Chinatown. Lots of fun jewelry, dishware, novelties, and some beautiful and reasonably-priced clothing for women that are definitely one-of-a-kind in regards to the area (and that's saying something, because virtually everything you see in one shop in Chinatown is available in every other next shop - such repetitive shopping). Staff is very nice, but the sales girl will stand constantly outside the dressing room as you change or switch out sizes (aaah, personal bubble space!). A little pricey in comparison to the other SF Chinatown stores. However this one tends to have more quality goods, organization and variety in one place. Lots of jewelery, decorations, housewares, clothing, and purses, all very beautiful. I have always wanted one of their jewelry boxes. I make it a point to stop here when I am passing through. It stands out from the others as all the other nearby shops tend to have that "tacky tourist" feel. read more

Tourist trap? Went inside looking for cheap home centerpiece decorations. I see a beautiful flat Japanese style iron tea pot. I ask how much; the lady says $60. $60 is not the price I was looking for! For the most part, they do seem to have some vintage to antique items in here. I remember seeing old , drums, Chinese house panels but I don't know if they are authentic. read more

When my cousin buys his own house, he will be coming here to buy his furniture. Shoot, I would too. My cousin always plans where to put the furniture in his future house everytime we see a different piece at the store. Anyway, this store has so many beautiful clothing and furniture. I've lived in SF all my life and I've never been into this store until last week . They sell traditional Chinese antiques such as clothes , furniture , etc. The store is very organized and the items are more on the high-end side . You'll probably find these items sold in China for much cheaper but you have to admit ... having these kind of stores in Chinatown is much better than having stores that sell San Francisco suveniors . This place is neat, very unlike the other places on Grant which hawk the same souvenirs over and over again. It's definitely more upscale though which explains it. They had a large collection of really old looking mahjong sets (though I think you can get those on eBay pretty cheaply since they are in varying condition.) Didn't buy anything but could see getting a gift or two here. Shop around though. read more

Much higher end than most of the other stores in Chinatown, but there are some excellent things here from amazing duvet covers to great handbags to (quite expensive) (but good) home furnishings. There are some old ads circa 1920's China that are great if you are looking for something different. There are wonderful statues, too, for only a few thousand! (Yikes. I'd returned, as last time I was here they had the PERFECT little silk bag that fit an iPhone and hung around your neck. I'd bought a bunch, but had foolishly given most away, not realizing I should have kept one to match every outfit. And now, heartbreak, they don't make it anymore. On top of that, they have a HUGE selection of really random things, mainly oriental items (or at least oriental to white people).
