The Old Rectory in Dungarvan was hands down the worst B and B we stayed in during our month-long cycle trip.
The owner's wife was really, really unpleasant--as we were drinking our tea after breakfast the next morning, she marched in and asked us what we were still doing, didn't we know we had to check out? We replied that yes, we did, but all we had to do was take quick showers and then pack our things--we were cycling, it's not like we had a lot to pack. As it turned out, she had shut our hot water off. When we went downstairs to ask for the hot water so we could take showers and jet, she told us it was our own fault, that we should have taken showers the night before, that our water was broken. We asked again, and were again told it was our fault we couldn't shower, but if we'd like, she could boil us water so we could shower in the sink.
This confused us greatly, mostly because we'd intended to check into The Old Rectory, not Ye Olde Taverne Inne circa 1750. Finally, after nearly a half an hour of argument, she let us take showers in another room, all the while freaking out at us that we were going to make her miss her funeral and trying to distract us by telling us all about how the kid had overdosed on ecstasy. The thing is, had she a) not turned our water off, or b) just let us take showers in the other room right off the bat, we would have been gone in under fifteen minutes.
All in all, I can't recommend anything about this place. There are plenty of great B and Bs in Dungarvan...skip this one. read more
