I have stayed in a great number of B&B guesthouses in Ireland, but I remember St Anthonys in Dungarvan the most favourably.
Dungarvan or Dún Garbhán is in Co. Waterford is in the 'Sunny SouthEast', 48km east of Waterford city. It commands Dungarvan Bay and is overlooked by the Comeragh Mountains.
St Anthonys guesthouse is no more than 10mins walk from the centre of Dungarvan, which is a very attractive coastal town.
There were 5 of us staying here for 4 days, one woman, who had, (naturally), a double to herself, with us four blokes, in 2 rooms with twin beds. All of these rooms were really nice centrally heated, bright & airy rooms, with en-suite bathrooms, (fabulous easy to use power shower in the twin rooms, nice bath as well as the shower in the double). For a caffeine addict like me there was a more than generous selection of tea, coffee & biscuits, in the rooms! Also tv with good reception, which wasn't always the case in other places we stayed, & my laptop easily found a Wi Fi connection, and kept it.
Kay, the landlady was so friendly, and genuinely lovely, and couldn't do enough for us. I think the breakfast was not just the nicest cooked breakfast I 'd had in Ireland, but in any hotel or B&B I've ever stayed in! I'm vegetarian, and instead of gazing at me in alien puzzlement, as often I get, she effortlessly whipped up a gorgeous tomato omelette the first morning, and then went out shopping especially to buy quorn sausages the next. My friends, who are all of the more carnivorous persuasion, were greatly impressed with her generous full works Irish breakfast I can tell you, and Jo, our superior sole female was even catered for when she got out of bed at 10.30 one morning!
There are excellent laundry facilities in the guesthouse, and here again Kay was fantastic, as beyond the call of duty for her, she did laundry for us not just once but twice in the 4 days we stayed.
Don't ask me to do the maths, but It worked out as an incredibly reasonable rate, us 5 staying & sharing, our boss so to speak who is both careful & cash-strapped was well pleased. Also because all the rooms are generous sized, we didn't once feel cramped or in each others pockets.
I bought Kay a nice box of chocolates when we left, in gratitude for her being so fabulous, and making us feel not like guests but as family members. read more
