The beds ate massive and comfortable. The view is spectacular with every room having a sea view as the hotel, as the name suggests, is perched on the side of a cliff. Suffice to say we like it here. It's not cheap but then a real 5 star experience never is. Trying to think of a negative for, y'know, balance so the car park is a bit snug. That's it. That's all I've got. If you're looking for that special place to, say, pop the question look no further. We'll be back when we can afford it. Highly recommended.

I was driving comfortably until I got to the area. But I just could not find the hotel (or get to the way), so I stopped a couple of times to ask for directions. As always, Irish folks are so nice and kind to strangers! Finally I arrived at the hotel without causing any damage to the rental or myself. The assistant GM welcomed me and gave me nice upgrade to their biggest suite, thanks to my Starwood elite status. See the photos. Too bad I did not bring my army as I could have thrown a huge party at the balcony. The bathrooms were all covered/decorated by marble, the living room was spacious, etc. In the evening, they were providing complimentary winetasting at one of the in-house restaurants (The Cove), so I went. Another restaurant (Fota Restaurant) served breakfast which contained European style continental breakfast (incl fruit, cheese, cold cuts) and cooked eggs/traditional Irish breakfast. Their spa has a nice indoor swimming pool. There is Fota Island Golf Club nearby, so if you are keen to play golf, the hotel concierge is happy to book for you. I guess the only downside is there's nothing within walking distance, so you must have a car (or get a cab). But the historic island of Cobh is only a few minutes away where I spent relaxing afternoon and The Jameson Old Distillery is in Midleton which is less than 30min away.

We briefly got to enjoy the complimentary spa hydrotherapy pool, steam, and sauna rooms, which were beautiful and relaxing. Breakfast and dinner were both fantastic with top-notch service. Our cocktails and dinner had a gorgeous presentation, and everything we ate was wonderful. There are lots of good options at the breakfast bar and plenty of gluten-free items for me. Only issue was the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night and they were a little rude when I called to ask if we should evacuate or disregard, and then no one apologized or explained the next morning at check out. The Midleton Distillery Experience is home to seven iconic Irish whiskey brands: Jameson, Redbreast, Powers, Midleton Very Rare, The Spot Whiskeys, Method and Madness, and Knappogue Castle. The site itself is the original Old Midleton Distillery, and walking through it means moving through restored 19th-century warehouse buildings where whiskey has been aged in oak casks for generations. The history is embedded in the walls, and the experience is designed to make sure you actually feel it rather than just walk past it. We booked the private premium tasting tour, and the decision to go private changed the entire dynamic of the visit. Our tour guide -- French by birth, now based in Ireland having moved to learn English -- was exceptional. His enthusiasm for Irish whiskey was completely genuine, his knowledge was deep, and his ability to translate that knowledge into something both accessible and fascinating made the experience far better than any standard group tour could have. The kind of guide who makes you leave knowing things you did not expect to know when you arrived. The premium tasting takes you through four prestige whiskeys from the distillery's range, each contextualised properly rather than just poured and moved on from. The difference between what's available here and what you find on a standard shelf is immediately apparent. The highlight, and the moment that made the visit stick: I purchased a cask strength expression at 61% and bottled it myself directly from the cask. That is a singular experience -- standing in a working distillery, filling your own bottle from a numbered cask, corking it by hand. It is not a gimmick. It is exactly what it sounds like, and it earns every penny. If you are in the Cork area, include this in your itinerary without hesitation. The experience here is more thorough and personal than anything the Dublin distillery offers. Go private if you can, and stay long enough to bottle something. Well where to begin, perhaps at the bottom of, what seems like, the mile long drive up to the…read morehotel. Watch out for the speed bumps!! The hotel/resort is set on an actual island. Attached to the hotel is the Forta Golf course, which I was told has hosted some major golf tournaments. There is a wildlife park, tennis courts, football training pitches and the island even has its own train station. There are several trails which you can walk or run around, if you are that way inclined. The island is very green and picturesque, the sun rise is particularly good if you have one of the front facing bedrooms. The bedrooms are very well appointed with all the bits you would expect, large bed, desk area, sofa chairs and ample wardrobe space if you have lots of clothes to store. The hotel staff could not do more for you. Yes I know it is the service industry but they all seemed genuinely happy to help, even with very very mundane things. Now I was there over a weekend and they had one wedding party on the Friday and one in the Saturday night, if you are staying on the 1st floor you will hear the music into the early hours, be warned. The food was ok, although we were stuck on the tournament menu which was not very good but looking at the food served to other guests it looked good. They have a very good bar with good bar staff, plenty of Irish whiskey's to sample. Our Irish counter parts were in there one night until 5am!! A good venue with high quality accommodation. Drink: Prosecco; Grilled Sea Bass with Avocado & Chilli Salsa. Drink: Sauvignon Blanc; Smoked Parmesan & Roast Vegetable Risotto. Drink: Alsace-Gewurztraminer "Hugel"; Aherne's Sorbet; Surf & Turf (Char-grilled Baby Fillet Steak & Prawns) Chile. Drink: Chile Crucero Cabernet Sauvignon; Farmhouse Cheese. Drink: Warre's 1999 Late Bottled Vintage Port; Sticky Toffee Pudding; Irish Coffee. Quite a meal. We were first in to the restaurant at seven and it was ten or afterwards before we finished. Business was quite slack on Friday, maybe a calm before the storm of Mother's day. The standard, as you'd expect, was very high indeed. All the courses were excellent and highlights included the scallop; the bass and particularly the salsa; the risotto also; steak (not quite the baby indicated) was splendid as was the cheese selection, not to mention the port; the sticky toffee was very rich and so tempting and the Irish Coffee rounded it all off. Service was very friendly and efficient throughout our stay and we also enjoyed our breakfast the following morning. I almost forget the bread, brilliant at both meals.
