The Old Point Bar is the epitome of an old school dive bar. There are daily drink specials, pot luck food during Saints games, and live music in the evenings. Our bartender was beyond friendly and provided guidance regarding their specials. Our pours were heavy and priced very reasonably. We got a kick out of the old school urinal trough filled with ice cubes in the men's room. This a great last stop before you walk back to the ferry. read more

This is the best kind of dive bar, and it hits all of the great points. Affordable prices, bags of salty chips to alleviate the strong liquor taste, great bartenders (with cute earrings!), great music, and a convenient location for those in the point who just want to kick back after a day at work, or to just enjoy the scenery along the levee. The bathroom is clean 98% of the time, and the staff is just awesome. They also have a couple video machines, as well as friendly patrons. You're not going here looking for the gourmet experience, but both you and your wallet will leave happy. read more

This review is overdue some. I have a dear friend who I served with in the Navy. He grew up in NoLa and still lives there today. I rode my Harley down to visit him for Mardis Gras, 1969, my first year back in the world. I had an incredible time. Don't remember much about it because I was pretty hammered the whole time but everyone said I had fun. Being a local he knew all the cops which is why none of use were ever escorted to the hoosegow that week. I digress.. so many (MANY) decades passed and I felt like I needed to make one last trip to The Big Easy to visit my old friend. Did that and surprisingly, not a lot has changed in the French Quarter in all that time. I'm a life-long blues man...Chicago blues mostly but I do like Delta blues and swamp opera. I digress again. Took the ferry to a dive bar that I'm pretty sure we also stopped at 50+ years ago. The Old Point Bar. Now this is the dive bar to beat all dive bars! Lots of character! Great people, good food, good beer... good music. Not much to look at from the outside (or the inside for that matter) but the joint is amazing. Samantha Fish just happened to be there that night which was a huge plus. Got introduced to her and Jacob Toliver another blues guy. I happen to speak French so the Cajuns in the place treated my friend and I like family. Of course he is a regular and also Cajun so that helped a lot. I am most at home at Biker bars and pretty much all of them are sawdust floor dive bars. I could spend my entire life in this place it felt so much like home. A wonderful old bar with live music. Worth taking the ferry over to experience this spot on a Friday or Saturday night---we stayed for several hours and through two musical acts, and really enjoyed the crowd. The bartender was extremely nice. We had food from another local spot, and she let us eat it there. The other patrons were great, mostly locals and a few friendly dogs. read more

The drinks were amazing! Service was above and beyond! Bar tender even gave me a bandaid for my spot where my shoe was rubbing. If you've been to NOLA many times and are looking for a different place to visit I would say this is worth a stop. Legendary status for a reason- one of the oldest bars on Algiers Point- don't let the dilapidated building throw you off, or shy you away- this is the true diamond in the rough. The math on drinks is a easy- $5- and the mixed drinks are solo cup worthy. Live music and friendly customers! The Old Point Bar is a great example of a neighborhood dive bar. Despite growing up in Algiers, I had never been to this bar. Thanks to the recent west bank bar crawl event (Thanks Marielle S. for the itinerary), I got to find out what I had been missing all these years. As I entered I was surprised at the size of the bar. It is fairly large with very high ceilings. There is a very long bar and several tables. There is also a stage and small area behind the stage with a pool table. One odd thing about the bar was that the men's restroom door couldn't be opened all the way. When opening the door it struck the stairway leading to the pool table. I guess this is their way of determining regulars. I obviously was not and when I exited there was a loud thump. Another interesting thing about the bathroom is that they put ice in the urinals. This is a huge plus. If you are a guy, you will enjoy watching the ice melt while you pee. The bartender was friendly, but service suffered so she could take care of regulars first. As obvious outsiders we had to flag her down to get a drink. I can't hold that against her since if I were a regular, I would expect better service too. Beer was reasonably priced. There was a decent selection of beers, and drafts were around $3.50. I enjoyed my time at the Old Point and would gladly come back. If you're in the point and want a casual, neighborhood dive, give Old Point a try. read more

Thank God there is no more smoking!! Whew! I mean some of the best bars where so unenjoyable in the past when smoking was allowed inside and this was one of them. Now, its one of the best IMHO on the Westbank. I have one small gripe, plastic go cups are used all the time. I havent had mixed drinks here yet, but I hear from others that they are made right. Thats the only negative I can think of. Umm, kinda older crowd, so if you are looking to hook up with the opposite sex, be prepared. Pluses... Live music every night pet friendly lots of parking friendly bartenders ok prices friendly atmosphere almost completely French Quarter/Uptown feel to this bar great draught beer selection right next to levee to get freaky if need be lots of open windows for nice constant breeze inside historic building Its been my go to lately on the WB. I've decided to update this review because my view of the Old Point has changed considerably. I was wrong when I said that unless you live in the area there is no reason to go here. There are a lot of reasons to go here, not the least of which is seeing a variety of different bands and enjoying the New Orleans atmosphere at a neighborhood bar just outside of New Orleans proper. The staff is always friendly and the crowd is a bit older and respectful. My only complaint is the cigarette smoke. I don't know if it's a ventilation issue or what, but even if just one person is smoking in there, the entire place fills with smoke. I would love it if they went smoke free or installed some better smoke eaters. read more

I love the Old Point Bar. It's a quintessential dive bar located in the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans...Algiers Point. What I like: Cheap drinks Big windows that open up to the outside, allowing you to sit outside and still watch and hear the band playing inside. The operative word is "old" because we were definitely the youngest people there. The bartender was old enough to be my grandma, and it looked like it was definitely a local hang. I heard of this place from a couple of people. Decided to check out open mic night. First impression outside. Tables, chairs, couple of guys sitting enjoying the calm, 85ish weather drinking a beer. Across the street from the levee, so not much traffic. I go inside, and it's a nice neighborhood bar. Big, heavy, wide chairs at the bar...I like that. Being a big guy, I hate wobbly, or small wooden, or fancy deco bar stools. Give me a nice big seat anytime. Not a whole lot of people here, but all neighborly, regular types. Some people stop by for a quick one, or walking their dog, so stop in to say hello. It's bigger than I thought it would be, pool table in the back. Permanent stage in main room. Gambling machines on one wall. A lot of "collectable" bar stuff, flags, license plates, signs, lights.. kinda old fashioned but cool. Open mic night was kind of sparse on talent, but fun. The host played a few tunes with a drummer back up. It was ok. Beers are cold and priced right, good shot pour. The bartender Jill, was friendly, cool, personable. I like this place. Cuz, I'm a neighborhood guy. And this is definitely a neighborhood place. Men's room has a trough, and is pretty small. Hate to see it on a busy night. read more

Solid neighborhood bar with a good selection of beers and liquors. As always if you're driving over to Algiers, I can get lost getting to the point. It is much easier to take the ferry. On the gorgeous spring afternoon, I was last hear (Yay for the Party Bus Wank Bar tour) the windows were all open so any smoke was quickly dissipated. Loved that the regulars were tolerant of our shenanigans. Random fact: the first time I ever came here was the Bonerama CD release party since they recorded their first CD live here. read more

My go-to spot for a refreshment stop while cycling on the west bank. The Old Point Bar is further down from the usual tourist area by the ferry. Old Point serves great seasonal draft beer, strong cocktails and awesome atmosphere. They also have live music nightly. Love this place. read more

It has been 2 years since I reviewed this bar. I am so thankful that it is, unlike so many places, untouched by the bad hiring practices that have caused so many good places to go downhill. Warren and his awesome dog Bo are still around and the vibe is great. We can't go there right now since we still don't smoke nor can handle smokey places but for a one night celebration like 4th of July, we will make an acception. The people there are always the best locals ever. I am just saddened by the ferry's new owners messing everything up due to corporate structure that does not understand NOLA at all. I've been here twice so far, and had an absolute blast on both occasions. As far as I can tell, they have music every night. At least, in my experience, there is live music here 100% of the time. The first night it was a funky group of white dudes. Most recently it was an open mic night. The coolest thing about Old Point Bar is all the old signs and stuff they have hung up all over the bar. There's a word for this... but I can't think of it. Memoribilia? Miscellany? Cultural artifacts? Whatever. You know what I mean. At least, you do if you've been there. They serve Tin Roof beer. So far, this is the only bar I've seen that carries it. In fact, they have a pretty solid beer selection. Especially for a city that's not exactly overrun with bars that have a wide range of beers. Old Point is definitely up there with places like the Bulldog or Cooter Brown's. Okay, well, maybe not quite that beer-oriented, but still more so than your average bar. You can sit outside and enjoy the weather, if you're able to snag one of the handful of large tables outside. My other favorite thing about Old Point Bar is that it's right up the street from the Canal Street Ferry, which is the best thing ever. SO much better than driving over the bridge. You have no idea. In fact, the reason I even ended up at Old Point the second time was because, on my way home from dinner on the Wank, I decided I wanted to take the ferry instead of the Crescent City Connection. And - oh, hey! -there's a great bar right there by the ferry. I can sit down and have a few beers while I spend some quality time with my laptop... Or a group of yelpers. (The latter is what ended up happening. And it was a lovely evening indeed.) Can't wait to go back! read more

Right down from the Algiers Ferry Terminal this place is a must stop if you're smart enough to jump on the Canal Street ferry and venture out of NOLA proper and across the Big Muddy to Algiers... You and the friends can make a small bar crawl right near the ferry terminal between this great bar, the Crown and Anchor and the Dry Dock... Has some outside tables if you want the fresh air, big open windows so that even outside you can enjoy the music... All in all this is a wonderful old school NOLA neighborhood bar that's well worth the visit... Definitely need to add this bar for a day or night trip across the river and away from the crazy that can be NOLA... read more

I rather enjoyed the Old Point Bar, a rollicking beer forward joint on the West Bank that offered a new experience for both my tour guide and I: we stopped in on a night when the band on stage was doling out jambalaya and blues, with a side of jazzy upscale trumpet. The band was fun and the crowd, as one might expect, easy and teeming with what appeared to be regulars. The noise level in here no doubt varies based largely upon whether or not a band's mid-set: I found the room not quiet, exactly, but acoustically polite, perhaps, until the band started up and as you might imagine, things got louder from there. You won't see anything here you may not have seen some place else, but you won't feel unwelcome. And there's some half-witty bathroom graffiti besides, which I figure is a decent sign. I'm not this way often, but when I'm here, there's a fighting chance I'll be turning one over at Old Point. read more

I've been here a few times but I rarely get here. The rare times I get here are when I decide to take out of town friends on an adventure on the Algier's Ferry. This bar along with the Dry Dock Cafe & Bar, and Crown and Anchor are the usual stops I will make on my ferry excursions to Algiers. This always seems like a pretty laid back bar and it is about the only place to catch live music on a regular basis in this area. read more

This bar is a old and seasoned, but still very much alive. The folks know each other, the drinks are strong and cheap, and everyone's having a good time. We walked into bar, as the musician was playing and singing "Ode to Billy Joe" on the keyboard. When she segued into Rocky Raccoon, the Lena Horne version, kinda knew I was home. It's basically everything I thought the South would be. The Algiers Ferry may leave at 5:30, doesn't mean you have to! Taxis take you back across the river all day and night. read more

Those who have never ventured to Algiers Point are missing out on a cool neighborhood that warrants a walk around, and you're missing out on one great bar! Old Point is a neighborhood joint,located next to the levee on Patterson. They have a pool table and darts. The beer is cheap, no French quarter prices here. The owner usually can be found on a bar stool with his dog laying by his feet. Yes folks, Old Point is canine friendly. Many movies have been shot here and some of the pictures hang on the walls. Actually, take a close look at the walls....so much randomness. Live music almost every night, and no cover. Just be sure to tip the band, they deserve it. I saw Bottoms Up Blues Gang here on a Friday night for the first time, and they put on a great show. Cool off inside or sit at the sidewalk tables. I admit I lived across the street and was a neighborhood regular. The live booming sounds of the bar would cause my old shotgun house to shutter in anticipation. Like a zombie rising from the grave I would rise from my bed and throw on whatever clothes were most convient and make my way toward the siren songs. I have many happy memories of some wild nights. The music is almost always no cover. One of the owners-Chad, manages the place well. He is reasonable with requests and the booze is priced for the budget conscious. I am glad I was around to see the day the bar added tap drinks. Apparently the coveted and elusive Andygator was added because of my suggestion. The locals are a lively colorful bunch and this bar makes one feel like they are in the French Quarter without actually having to cross the bridge. I love it! We found this place because we wanted to do a sunset cruise but didn't want to pay the price. Spend $4/pp for a roundtrip ride to Algiers for a great view! Walk around Algiers to see some lovely homes and definitely check out this bar. Prices are super reasonable! Only downside is no food. They sell packaged snacks but not a big variety. read more
