Corner bar

Very average uptown neighborhood dive bar. Sure you can get a cold beer served by a bartender with attitude, but in spite of what earlier reviewers or the note from the owner on their Yelp page says (see screenshot below), they do NOT have "poor boys, gourmet burgers, chicken sandwiches" or food of any kind, unless there happens to be a pop up on the sidewalk. Even their website touts the amazing food, but don't you dare ask the bartender for a food menu. Trust me! Too many amazing bars in New Orleans to put up with mediocrity.

Solid spot on Magazine to pop in for a reasonably priced drink or beer. They have a juke box and some outdoor seating, and lately they have some pretty great food pop ups, too. Restrooms are always clean (a huge plus). And they put out candy - the good stuff- for bar snacks! I know they have karaoke at night, but I always seem to end up here in the daytime.

Great neighborhood bar that currently has one of the best chefs in the city running the kitchen. We had the burger which is char-grilled and excellent as well as the bang bang shrimp which is actually better than the original at Bone Fish Grill. Too bad no parades this year because this would be a great place to watch the start of parades.

2 bucks!

Nice neighborhood place. I've been here several times. CASH ONLY! They have an ATM. They have a Sangria special, but it's mostly a shot and beer place. Domestic bottles are 2 bucks opening till 7pm for happy hour, then goes up to $2.50. Great price for nola. Small place, couple of tables. Outside tables. Game room in back, carry out food adjoining. (Big Cheesy) WARNING!! Men's room is tiny.. my shoulders almost touch the walls. There is a sink to wash your hands when you come out of the washroom and walk behind the bar. But, seeing as how it's been open in the same spot since 1900, understandable. Also, the same family has owned it since then (4 generations)!! When I want to watch some sports, have some beers, shoot the shit with neighborhood folks, I come here. I havent seen too many tourists in here, even though it's on Magazine. Bartenders are friendly, it's clean. Can't go wrong. Street parking.

Henry's. Oh Henry's. I may be biased because this bar is so close to my house, but I moved here pretty recently and this bar was exactly what I had in mind when I imagined living on the bar-laden Magazine St. Within about 10 minutes of walking in I had met the hilarious bartender, who yelled at the owner to stop whatever he was doing to come over and meet me. Then the owner started telling me the history of the bar, how his great-grandfather opened it up in 1900 and part of the actual bar that we were sitting at was from that time. Then they started telling me how much fun this place was on Mardi Gras and the bartender bought me a drink. It was like a huge family - everyone knew everyone else and they were very welcoming to a newcomer like myself. They have a few TV's inside and always show Saints and LSU games. It is smoking but it wasn't too bad when I was there (on an early Thursday night). There are a few tables to sit outside and they only take cash but there is an ATM inside. The jukebox was playing old Hank Williams Jr and Johnny Cash. The clientele included 20-somethings to 60-somethings. They do serve food and the hot wings and quesadillas are delicious; they claim they have great burgers but I haven't tried one yet. It's a true dive bar but not in that hipster-y, 'I go here because it's a dive bar' sense. The staff and patrons are friendly and welcoming and aren't trying to prove anything because they don't need to. I'll definitely be a regular here.

Eventually the bartender was kind enough to smile and make reasonable eye contact. Even one of the other bartenders eventually cracked a smile at me. The third one, however refused to make any eye contact and she stood in front of me most of the time. I think she's the bar manager? Anyways, the reason I'm really writing this reviews because just as I was paying my check, the hostess decided to ask me to move my seat to seat a group of three at the bar on my right hand side. There was room for three chairs, and there may have been three chairs when I originally sat down. There were no longer three chairs when three people arrived, but I should not be asked to move my seat, especially when I'm paying my bill. The audacity of that host is to ask me to move without any regard for my dining experience pissed me off. That's why I'm writing this review. In today's economy in New Orleans, they're lucky that it was a packed house tonight. So many restaurants do not have adequate business to survive and I really only went because somebody was working there as a runner and I was really excited to see him because he was an old friend. Had I known I would be asked to move my seat at the bar I would not have sat there. And let me tell you I deliberately chose my seat at the bar so that there were two seats on one side and three on the other, so no group would have been inconvenienced by my solo dining status! The food was good, but I won't be back for a long time! And I live in the neighborhood.

We all started with cocktails, I had a version of a dirty martini that featured vermouth which gave it a lighter and almost sweet flavor that is not the briny flavor of the typical dirty martini. I enjoyed it but I only had one. We ordered so many different things but the standouts include the tomato & mango salad, the oyster bed roast, the tandoori squash and my entree the pork vindaloo. It was sooo delicious and I was grateful to have leftovers because everyone else at the table order the softshell crab entree. That bothered me only a little because it was way too much food but also, it's a pet peeve of mine when people order the same thing- why not try/share everything on the menu ‍ Anyway, the service was excellent and so attentive. I was also treated a large slice of chocolate cake as a birthday treat. I was so stuffed but I managed a couple bites and shared with everyone. The consensus is that it was a phenomenal dining experience! Definitely a birthday treat.

After our first visit, I believed it was my top meal that I have ever had in the city of New Orleans, and after this visit that sentiment remains true. The pricing is appropriate for what you get from a service, ambience, wine pairing, and food quality & preparation standpoint -- and I did not walk away feeling like I paid too much for this meal (unlike some other set-menu experiences that have gained Michelin recognition in this city). This recent visit has solidified The Kingsway for me as my special occasion restaurant of choice. Our party of three ordered a cocktail to start and the four-course tasting menu with house wine pairing (an additional $95 per person). They also have a reserve wine pairing option available for $150 per person. The dining experience was appropriately paced, and we did not feel rushed or pressured to quickly finish our wine before the next course & pairing arrived. James, the sommelier, was fantastic, knowledgeable, and passionate about wine as well as very friendly and approachable and nailed the pairings with each dish. While everyone at the table each ordered a different dish for each course (and thus a different wine pairing for each), when it came to dessert, two people ordered the same thing and he kindly brought out two different wines so that we could try two different pairings with the same dessert (again, both pairings were excellent). As someone who is just starting to learn about the world of wine and tasting, I really appreciated that opportunity to sample two very different styles of wine in the context of that one dessert. I ordered the cold ramen with crab, which was delightfully presented and very balanced from a flavor standpoint, with just enough spice/heat. Second, I had the tamarind pork belly, which was my favorite dish of the evening. I usually don't order pork belly because I do not like the fatty texture that is typical of pork belly, but this one was cooked so nicely that there was absolutely no fatty texture to the dish, and everything was crispy yet tender. Third, I had the Wagyu for my main course, which was prepared with a delicious five-spice seasoning, with an artfully presented roasted eggplant along with a small portion of potato salad. All of the elements of that dish, while served separately on the plate, were very balanced on the whole. Speaking of plates, each dish (for the most part) came out on a different plate, which added to the artful experience of how beautifully presented each course was. For dessert, I had the coconut cloud. And that's what it was -- a perfect way to end a meal. We walked away feeling very satisfied and satiated, but not overly full. The Kingsway is the best fine dining meal in New Orleans from a service, food, and wine/beverage standpoint. Can't wait for our next visit back to this amazing restaurant.
