He was informed that the store was not hiring at the time. She refused his application and recommended he apply at the other locations in Jackson. Carol and Lori and other cashiers have always taken my empties. When I told him that Carol, the owner, has given me permission to bring 48 empties, since I buy 48 cans (2 cases). His response was Carol doesn't work here. Who owns this store? I come in on a regular basis and have never been treated like this guy treated me today. I don't know what else to say. I paid 10 cents a can to this store but they would not refund my money upon return.

While Oakland County and the Ann Arbor area are synonymous with boutique markets, Jackson - as an aging population of predominantly lower working middle-class folk - has a dearth of local grocery stores. Essentially, it's Walmart, Meijer, Kroger and Target. If you're looking to avoid chains, it's rather difficult. The exception to the hegemonic dominance of chains is Polly's. They're a chain in the loosest sense of the word; it's a local cluster of groceries in Jackson, Brooklyn, Chelsea and Dexter. There are three locations in Jackson (one in the rest). As a kid, Polly's was pure Jackson. The store on Spring Arbor Road had this old, rustic feel. We used to park in their parking lot and sit in the back of a pick-up truck during the 4th of July, as the fireworks could be seen from Cascades. I just went back to this location for the first time in at least twenty years, and it looks exactly the same as I remember (with mild renovations on the inside). Unsurprisingly, the hot food bar was mostly comfort food/soul food. I purchased a half pound of macaroni salad, which was rather cheap and relatively tasty. While there, I also noticed an older gentleman trying to grift the system by taking premium pre-bagged grapes and placing them in bags to be weighed out as generic produce. They have a good selection of Great Lakes Chips, which are hit-or-miss around here. Their prepared foods and in-house baked goods were incredibly cheap. It's certainly not an all-star, home run kinda thing. But it feels quite...quaint. It's very Jackson-y. I'm glad it still exists.

Covid has done a lot towards keeping us isolated. A repose from sitting and watching TV, is a run up to Polly's for Deli Lunchmeat, cheeses, Ora fresh baked cake. During my girls childhood, for 20 years I always ordered their birthday Cakes from Polly's, on Ferguson Road. What was so special? One could order Disney Characters on the cake, my daughter's favorite photo, a creamy whipped topping that wasn't terribly sweet. Much of the rest of the store allotted space for new or traditional world wide cuisine. It always had unique items. My younger daughter, whilst in her teens, refused to eat sandwiches without sprouts. Polly's, had them when no one else did. What more can I say? The best thing is to get off the couch in this icy cold weather, and take a trip to one of three Polly's locations.

The clerk told me that this potato salad can also be found at Metzger's German Restaurant. The potato salad was interesting. Heavy on the vinegar with a strong sour taste.
