Big chalk board outside said Fathers day lunch £7.50, I conned the wife into going halves (she was fed up of driving round by then) so we went in. We were greeted by friendly bar staff and a more restaurant approach but in a rural pub setting which was a bit odd but good, grabbed a couple of pints of rancid old scrotum or some other cask ale and parked at the table which the waitress helpfully showed us to. The menu had a choice of 4 meals, 5 starters and plenty of puddings (desserts if you're from that London) which were all specials for the day. I chose a steak and ale pie with new spuds etc and the wife a beef dinner with all the trimmings....... service took around 10 minutes so I bought more "Armpit sweat" or "Old bags eyeball juice" or some other beer of some strange name. Believe me when I say it was worth the driving around and having to drink beer with twigs in (I don't have a beard or corduroys or a tank top so I prefer my beer twig free) as I can honestly say it was a genuinely home made pie, in a dish with just a crust on top and filled with half a cow and some fungus pieces (mushrooms of the non magic variety) all swimming in gravy that I believe was made from the tears of an angel. The vegetables were a plenty and in bowls to share between us which gets me on to the wifes choice of roast beef dinner, she said it was the best beef she's ever had and believe me when I say she's had a lot of meat in her lifetime ;) It was melt in the mouth and enough to leave her with a smile on her face and the yorkshire pudding (no that's not the wifes nickname) was fresh made and delicious. So next time you're in the Drig area or even not but want a bally good nosh (sorry I just put my Tim Nice But Dim head on) put BD11 1LJ into your Satnav, you will not be dissapointed.

I am actually quite an established Morleyite having worked here in the past so this is a place I know and trust. It's a good team player (in football pun talk). You've got a big beer garden which will be good when the sun comes back from Jupiter. That's always a good starting point. next up, the beer is pretty cheap and that's a sure fire winner. The pub night is great for a laugh though I swear I was robbed referee. it's bent when the game is like that (football pun number a zillion). You've also got a good variety of things to get down your neck and the scran isn't bad either. Good for groups and worth a stop if you're in the area.

Last week, I had a leaflet posted through my door advertising that they had just re-opened following a re-furb, and that they were also offering a new food menu......so I thought I would give it a try. The re-furb has certainly brightened the place up, and it is now quite a pleasant place to visit. Prior to this, I certainly wouldn't have taken the Missus there, but I wouldn't hesitate now. They have the usual selection of keg product on the bar, but I was impressed with the real ales on hand pump. They have Tetley Cask, and Leeds Pale, which was on top form. They also had a spare hand pump which I was informed they intended to start using for a guest ale. The food menu was interesting and reasonably priced, with a bias towards steaks. I had their Steak & Stilton Pie, which was served with chips and peas. Plenty of steak in the pie and it was really very tasty. Chips were done just how I like them too. Portion size was more than adequate. I noticed that they also had a special on the blackboard......two steak meals and a bottle of Pinot Grigio or Merlot for £20......sounds like great value. All in all, I was quite impressed with what they have done here, and I will certainly be back for another visit soon.

Add to to that one of the biggest beer gardens I know of in the area, and my first impressions were very good. On my first visit, a few weeks ago, shortly after it opened, I was only there to sample some of the nine real ales they had on hand pull. All were in great condition and served perfectly, by extremely welcoming and knowledgable staff. My favourite at the time was the Citra, which, as its name suggests, is extremely refreshing. Being so close to Elland Road Stadium, they regularly have large volumes of lads pouring in through their doors, which would explain the rather unusual approach to the gentleman's rest room! It has an entry door, a one way system for doing your business and washing your hands, and then an exit door. Can't say I've seen this anywhere else, but a great idea! Anyway, I held off posting a review until I had had the opportunity to return for food, which I managed to fit in last week. I had their traditional fish and chips. The batter on the fish was delightfully light and crispy, the fish itself was really tasty and the chips were "skin on" and served in their own individual fryer basket.....nice touch! It also came with peas and homemade tartar, which was lovely too. Overall, a fantastic new addition to the area, with great food, drink, and excellent service, in very pleasant surroundings. This has got to be one of the better "supporters" bars that I have ever been to. It's located just…read moreoutside of Elland Road, the home of Leeds United, the Championship (2nd division) team. Of course I went there just before catching the game across the street, having an hour to spare. The place was jam-packed with fans sucking down suds and generally having a good time before kick-off. My friends went in and I told them that I would meet them there. (I went to the fan shop of Leeds Utd first.) When I got there and tried to get in, the security lady at the door of the pub wanted to see my game ticket. I told her that my friends had gone in already and that they had it. I told her my name (fortunately my friends told her!) and she let me in. So I guess this keeps out the rifraf. Being crowded and having to use the toilet often when you down pints, I thought it was great that out back they had a section in the garden fenced off for privacy and had the ol' game day urinals that you find in Europe at least. This cut down on waiting in the gents and kept me from wetting myself! Although crowded, there is a huge staff so not a long wait for a drink. Great atmosphere.

I've since visited the Belah pub again since my last review and have been in with my dog the young…read moremanageress came over and had a lovely chat with me my Betsy was giving a pork sausage and a water bowl and the lady made a real fuss of her despite her been really mucky after her walk on farnley park I will be going back now I know my Betsy is welcome inside and I am glad the manageress took the time to come and see me and my poochy and make us both feel welcome on this visit I am also glad to know that now all staff will let dog owners know they are dog friendly if they sit outside cause it's a massive plus for an establishment and I am happy to confirm that as the manger said it is on the door maybe this could be moved to the window for optimum viewing thank you for my visit with Betsy this time

Hands down my favourite pub in Leeds. Friendly staff and customers, good beer, fun events and -…read moremost importantly - dogs! I will always go out of my way to visit the Chemic if I fancy a relaxing evening. The entertainment they put on too is top notch - local acts and some from further away, including folk music and open mic nights where anyone can join in. It's also next door to the best chip shop in Leeds (which is veggie friendly!), and you can take your chips in to enjoy with a pint. If you're looking for a lovely place to have a nice evening, you couldn't go far wrong with the Chemic.

This is a tough review…read more Not because I'm unsure if I like the pub or not but simply because I fear that my review might attract people to the place and I love it just the way it is. The Chemic Tavern is in the Woodhouse area of Leeds. Woodhouse is not known for it's excellent pubs and neither is neighbouring Hyde Park. They both mainly consist of student pubs with no soul and flat Carlsberg. Not good. The good people at The Chemic Tavern have managed to remove themselves from these other kinds of pubs and have created something bloody lovely. First things first - the beer. They always have a great selection of ales on. Timothy Taylor's Landlord is always there and then usually two or three others. You then have a selection of decent lagers, wines and cocktails - all reasonably priced and well maintained. It's just nice to walk in to a pub, stroll over to the bar, look at the options and not think to yourself 'ahh bugger. .' but instead think 'ooh, what shall I have first?'. The staff are legendary. It seems all to often nowadays that being polite and having a friendly chat with your customers is a bit too difficult for a lot of places. Not with The Chemic. On every visit I have been made to feel like a returning friend and I love that. You instantly feel welcome and relaxed. It appears The Chemic only hire nice, chatty people. This is a very clever move - albeit a very obvious one. The music is always good too. There's no jukebox but you will often hear Motown, Blues and good Indie tunes. They have live music nights there as well, come to think of it. Ska nights, Irish nights and other things will go on in the back room that also features a darts board and an array of board games (if you fancy a geeky night down the pub, playing Trivial Pursuits). The other really nice thing about the place is that everyone who drinks in there appears to be very happy. I think this is because they're all aware that it's the best pub in miles. The Chemic appears to only attract people (and lots of them at the weekend) who are there to have a nice, enjoyable drink (or six) with their mates. I could go on and on but I fear it would just end up sounding like that I was considering proposing marriage to the pub. Which is obviously a ridiculous idea. . . isn't it? Yes, of course it is. How would I fit The Chemic in a church for a start? So I will end this review by adding that the pub has an amazing fish and chip shop (Arkwright's) next door and you're allowed to buy food from there and eat it inside the pub. Good stuff. So if you haven't been here before and you like proper pubs, I urge you to check this place out. Not too many of you, mind. .

The conversation simply flows organically between the bar and the patrons because it is such a homely relaxed environment. Everyone who came in said 'Hello' to the rest of the room, so rare and harking back to a time when people really DID know your name- it reminds me so much of the village pubs I worked in as a teenager, a place where you might go even for just a half pint on the way home...not for the booze but to see a friendly face or two and soak up some much needed human interaction in what is an increasingly insular and lonely world for so many. Tracy was serving and had a very restricted menu due to it being the season and all that, the delivery was due the next day but she managed to rustle us up two roast beef dinners and the richest, most dense and biggest portion of steak and ale pie I have EVER seen. The taste was fabulous. And at £5.95 for the roasts and £6.95 for the pie it was a real treat. We even managed to slug down a pudding, a fruity suet pudding with gravy for Ade and chocolate pud with icecream for me.....again epic portions and perfectly cooked- all for a mere £2.50. It was like going home for Sunday dinner...and Tracy was Mum. Just complete pleasure and contentment from start to finish. I couldn't like this place more. Having read the reviews I was brimming over with excitement to visit this little diamond. The food…read moresounded incredible, the building a treasure, and the staff a delight. As is sometimes the case, reading so many high reviews, your expectations can be raised beyond the achievable and so I was hoping for magic. We mightn't have found magic, but what we did find was a truly delightful pub in the midst of Hunslet. Let me start by attempting to paint the picture of just how gorgeous the architecture is. So bizarre is it to see such an amazing building in the midst of some rather droll redbrick housing estate, that it almost beggars belief. I found it fascinating - was Hunslet previously some kind of high end area of Leeds back in its day? How did this gem come about? Fortunately, the pub has kept various historical documents as to its origins, some of which are in a display cabinet detailing the story, a lot of which are used to decorate this fabulous structure. The pub is built in traditional fashion, with a long hallway as the entry, bar and tap room to the left, snugs and little nooks to the right. It reminds me of The Grove, both delightful anachronisms, and worth visiting to gaze upon. It's also now a Grade II* listed building. We were welcomed in, and I keenly asked about the, now Yelp-infamous, lunch. We were given a somewhat cryptic response - it wasn't a no, but it wasn't a yes. It wasn't really even a maybe! Apparently they'd a group booking so might not have been able to accommodate, so we ordered drinks, after hearing that is was possible potentially in an hour or so. Being now a Leeds Brewery owned spot, there's plenty of decent ale to keep you busy, whilst you have a gander and a natter. Another of our group bravely decided to ask about lunch after about half an hour, and the happy news was that they'd discovered some veg from their stores, so we could indeed dine that afternoon! I'm guessing, being so far out, that Sundays aren't always a busy affair - my advice might be to ring ahead and plan the visit, making sure they stock up before! After working out what the vegetarian in the party could eat (all the roast veg, and a veggie lasagne as the main part - random but suitable!) we ordered more drinks whilst we waited. Everyone was delighted that veggie gravy was also available. Soon enough, four stacked plates arrived before our eyes, and we tucked in. It's a proper home cooked vibe, so don't expect the likes of fine dining, but where it lacked in that area it made up for it in spades by being so damned hearty and cheap. I believe it was about six quid for a sizeable plate. The gravy, I thought, was delicious and the Yorkshire pud really tasty. I could have had several more! As much as there were quirks to the afternoon, the staff were all very lovely, and really helpful - especially since we mightn't have been fed at all that afternoon! There's nothing like a decent ale, a post-dinner game of random scrabble, a gorgeous pub, and an afternoon of laughter so for that I'm definitely a fan. I really want to come back and try the food again, especially as others have loved it so, so watch this space for an update. Another interesting thing would be to sink a few on an eve, and check out the vibe on a weekend. We'll see! Give them a visit, it's a beaut.

Service was excellant and attentive , the food was freshly made and cooked in house. The taste of my haddock was great, the batter outstanding, the hand cooked chips just as they should be fluffy on the inside, brown and not too crisp on the outside, obviously blanched, part fried andthen deep fried to order, the tartare sauce home made and excellant. My colleague` s steak and ale pie was full of trimmed pieces of meat with a lovely light pastry. What a surprise great foof service and sensible prices , I will return and so will he next time he is over from Vancouver ... and that is some accolade Try it !

The menu features typical pub grub of the bangers and mash and pie and chips ilk, with few concessions to gastropub trends aside from the odd dash of goat's cheese here and there, and they run special menus for things like Valentine's Day and Burns' Night, which is a nice touch. There also seems to be a lot of stuff going on, with everything from a Halloween party to Greek and Italian themed weeks advertised on their website, although every time I've visited it's been nicely quiet; calm and relaxed without being devoid of atmosphere. It seems to liven up as it gets later, though, and I get the impression that this is a popular pub with locals of a Friday and Saturday night.
