    Smoked Turkey with Potato Soup
    Ashley D.

As soon as I heard them playing The Strokes, I knew this place was going to be good. I got the 1/2 smoked turkey sandwich with cup of potato soup, and it was good and filling. We tried eating outside but there was just toooo many bees so beware.

I got the reuben with potato soup and a draft beer. About $25 all in. Delicious and hit the spot after a hike. I came at about 330 on a Thursday and it was empty inside but they had a decent amount of seating. Had various German beers and candies that you could buy to take home as well.

Second time here and both times delicious. The Bavarian Loaf sandwich is so fresh and light. The mustard is medium balanced, not too strong, but good flavor. My daughter loved her plate, too. The potato salad is fantastic as is the warm sauerkraut.

One of my favorite places in all of Big Bear and probably my favorite sandwich place ever. I always get the roast beef and potato soup, I forget how great it is until I bite into it and realize yeah, it's even better than I remember (every. single. time.) It's all so good!! My husband always gets the pretzel too. The inside is spacious and there's plenty of room to sit and enjoy your meal. And the service is always good.

Absolutely amazing! The food was so delicious that I'm anticipating coming back again. The sausage platter had the perfect amount of food and the sausages were tender and juicy. Amber, who was running the counter was so kind and patient. She waited while we took a look at the menu and was more than happy to answer any of our questions. 10/10 service, 10/10 food! The homemade ice cream was phenomenal. Creamy and sweet, the pistachio flavor is subtle and the pistachios on top really complement it. The pretzel was soft and pair wonderfully with the hummus which had an amazing red pepper flavor.

    Sausage Platter. Yummy!

Really liked the sausages and sandwiches here. But our favorite thing was the mustard. Really unique flavor in this mustard. Really wish I would've taken some to go. Service was great! Plenty of seating inside and outside. They also have a great selection of beers. Gotta try it out!

    Awesome weekly deal!

Literally our favorite place in Big Bear. We have struck out so many times trying to find decent food in Big Bear. But I wish this place was in LA! We usually go twice.

Found Old German Deli as a unique lunch option at Big Bear. They have dedicated parking with both indoor and outdoor seating options with a bathroom. We ordered the Schinkenwurst cold cut sandwich with a side of potato soup and a Sausage Platter (two sausages: Polish Kielbasa and Currywurst) with a side of potato salad. The potato salad was excellent - a bit different from traditional salad with mustard and small chunks of sausage. Both sausages were tender and the Polish Kielbasa was snappy. My favorite was the mustard dip - it was both sweet and tangy, I wish we could purchase it! Workers were friendly and food came out quickly. Would recommend for a quick bite near Big Bear Lake!

July 2025 - Sausage Platter, Small Pretzel, Apple Strudel Slice

We arrived right after they opened and were the first customers. The store was decorated with old German pictures and decor. There were European type candies and snacks available to buy. It was a homely restaurant. The service to get our food was a bit slow. Instead of ordering individual sandwiches, we ordered the Sausage Platter to share. We chose the Polish Kielbasa and a Knackwurst sausage. It came with a small pretzel bun, warm sauerkraut, a pickle spear, and potato salad. Their potato salad was not mayonnaise based and made with grain mustard and some sausage. It reminded me of cold, chunky mashed potato with sausage. Hubby preferred the kielbasa because of its deep beefy flavor. The Knackwurst (pork & beef) was lighter in flavor. The warm sauerkraut had good flavor and went well with the sausage and pretzel bun. We ordered a small pretzel to try and it was perfect after eating all of the pretzel bun. The apple streudel was served cold. Hubby took it back to our hotel room and warmed it up. It was yummy. Too bad we didn't have any ice cream. Hubby also wished he could buy the sausages in bulk to take home.

One of our must stop lunch places when visiting Big Bear. We stopped by for a to-go lunch order on a late afternoon in late December. There was no wait in line. We ordered: Schinkenwurst, Bavarian loaf, Roast Beef, and the German chocolate cake. The mustard on the side is delicious. They also sell snacks. Parking and finding seating can sometimes be a challenge during peak lunch hours, however the food is worth the visit!

    Size

To start the lady taking our order was rude, offered no help, and was not warming at all... very easy thing to do. We got a few different items. The turkey chicken pesto was good i will say that, but all their sides (potato soup, cucumber salad) were horrific (excessively salty and watery along with no flavor). Their pickle spears were small. Their portion size for the sandwiches was i'd estimate was around half a regular sandwich. Their pretzel which they were supposed to "specialize" in was dry, no flavor and an utter disappointment. The place was also not very clean. Don't expect ice or water or anything a normal place would have. 90+ for a meal that's supposed to feed 4 that could at most feed 2. This should have been 50 max! Maybe it was a bad day, let's hope so due to the good reviews. Forgot to add, took a very, very long time.

Potato salad with grainy, mustard, and sausage

The OGD pastrami was very tasty. I really enjoyed the avocado and onion on the sandwich. I have the Russian dressing on the side, it also came with the grainy mustard. The potato salad was very tasty, it came with the rainy mustard and little bites of sausage inside. Hubby had the two sausages and really enjoyed it. The only odd thing was if they don't have ice. So we had room temperature water.

we visited big bear lake for the puptopia event this year. after the event, we were so hungry! yelp, once again to the rescue. we found old german deli nearby and decided to try it out. old german deli gave homey vibes. loved the patio with live entertainment :D friendly service - our food was ready fairly quickly ordered: Sausage Platter $18 Comes with your choice of 2 sausages, potato salad, kraut, 1 pretzel bun, spear of pickle & mustard -ordered knackwurst HALF COLD CUT SANDWICH & SOUP $11 Your choice of cold-cut sandwich served with a pickle, mustard, & potato soup -BLACK FOREST HAM the potato soup was the highlight of my meal. it was such a warm day, idk why i ordered soup, but also, i really wanted to try it! so glad i did bc it was sooooo delicious! it would be fantastic during the winter! the pretzel bun also very tasty. my black forest ham sandwich was okay, would def try another item next time! parking: there is a public parking lot near bartlett rd and village dr.

She absolutely loved it & it was very great to see that not just the menu selection, but the actual food itself was truly authentic I got the bratwurst sandwich for my own nostalgia, which was perfectly made. Really enjoyed the homemade ketchup. My grandmother got the Jäger Spätzle with crispy onions on top. It was incredible!! We got the white cake to-go, which was pretty dang good. The staff was so sweet, kind, & really made the meal feel like a treat in itself! It's such a cute place. If it wasn't hot outside, sitting on the patio would be really nice to do in the future. The only thing that I really hope they bring back is a breakfast menu, because I can only imagine how great it would be. Also, breakfast is pretty much the same across the desert, very generic. Or trying to be unique (for a price). Authentic breakfast from this region of Europe would be a nice change.

Every visit is consistently incredible, and this time was no exception. We started with the Oktoberfest Pretzel and the Urnebes, and both were absolutely phenomenal. It's one of those dishes you keep coming back for because it's just that good. My daughter's boyfriend ordered the Lamb Chops, and they were fall-off-the-bone amazing--tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. I had the Spicy Gypsy Schnitzel Veal, and all I can say is wow. It was completely out of this world. The veal was perfectly prepared, and the spicy gypsy sauce took it to another level. And I can't leave out the Lemon Breeze. It is everything. Hands down, the best drink I've ever had--refreshing, delicious, and the perfect complement to an incredible meal. Alps Village just nails it every time. Amazing food, amazing drinks, service and a consistently fantastic dining experience. We'll definitely be back! 10/10 -- Highly recommend!

The restaurant has been serving customers since 1956, and you can feel the history the moment you walk through the door. The warm wooden booths, European décor, German beer signs, and cozy atmosphere make you feel like you've stepped into a family restaurant in Germany. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel, served with rich mushroom gravy, traditional German potato salad, and sweet red cabbage. Every bite was delicious, and it paired perfectly with a cold Paulaner beer. What impressed me most wasn't just the food--it was the story. Our waitress told us that when one of their employees was 17 years old, the original owner personally taught him how to make their famous sausages. Today, at 81 years old, he's still there making sausage five days a week. That's over six decades of preserving the same recipes and traditions. When I asked what his favorite sausage was, she smiled and said, the veal sausage. That alone guarantees what I'm ordering next visit. In a world full of chain restaurants, places like Gazzolo's are becoming rare. Family-owned, authentic, and built on generations of craftsmanship. If you appreciate homemade food, old-world hospitality, and restaurants with real history, put Gazzolo's at the top of your list. I'll definitely be back. Next time... the veal sausage.

But it's easy to see how this can rub people the wrong way, especially if they're used to American (or even modern German) - style customer service. Everyone who found this rude is making reasonable statements. But to me this is more a case of people who have been doing the same thing for a long time without making updates. Decor-wise, place also seems to recreating the Germany that someone remembers from decades ago. The blue and white bunting, the beer steins, the picture of the Pope and other memorabilia make the place feel distinctly Bavarian, in a touristy way. The Reuben and potato salad combo was especially hearty and satisfying, with rich, savory flavors that felt very true to a classic deli experience. The Hungarian sausage had a great depth of flavor, savory and well-seasoned without tipping into being overly salty. The cherry strudel was a standout to end the meal, filled generously with cherries and syrup, wrapped in a flaky pastry that balanced sweetness and texture really well. The beer tied everything together nicely, cold and refreshing, and exactly what you'd want with this kind of meal. I still prefer Busy Bees in San Pedro, but this was a nice alternative within the IE area. Price: George's Market falls into a casual, reasonable deli pricing tier. Sandwiches like the Reuben and similar deli items are generally in the mid‑teens range, while sausage plates and hot meals can push closer to around $15-20 depending on what you get. Beer and imported items vary, but overall you can expect to spend about $15-25 per person for a solid, filling meal. Given the quality, portion sizes, and specialty nature of the food, the pricing feels fair. Ambiance: The space is part cozy German market, part deli counter, with a warm, wood-heavy interior that feels inviting and a bit nostalgic. There's both indoor seating and an outdoor area, giving flexibility depending on the weather or how busy it is. Beyond the dining area, the market itself sells a wide range of German groceries and specialty products, which adds to the charm and makes it feel like more of an experience than just a quick meal. Service: Service was good and impressively efficient given how busy it gets. There was a noticeable line when we went (especially on a weekend lunch time), but things moved steadily and the staff kept everything organized without feeling rushed or chaotic. Friendly and straightforward overall. Parking: Parking is one of the easier parts of the visit. It's located in a plaza with a large shared lot, so there's plenty of space and no real hassle finding a spot, even during peak hours.

We were seated in the back of the restaurant, closer to the kitchen, which I don't think is nearly as nice as the front. It's not unpleasant, just not as nice. I was annoyed when the next table got their cocktail order in before us because they were seated after us. We got a different server, who took a while. The host had only provided a cocktail and wine list, so we weren't able to use that time to figure out dinner. Eventually the server came by. He knew his stuff, and went through everything we needed to know, but it was also clear that he was flat out. He asked if we wanted water, but then forgot and when we prompted him, one came with ice even though our guest requested no ice. Inital round of cocktails was on point, though no extra olives as requested by one. Not a huge deal. Drinks were excellent. Bread service and the beet salad were also quite good. I got the swordfish special. Swordfish is not my favorite fish, but the prep (pineapple black bean chutney) enticed me and it was very good. Another got the caper-lemon schnitzel. Another got the chicken curry. The curry was not as good as hoped; I think it was a little thin. No complaints on the schnitzel. Dessert and coffee were offered but we were full.
