Man fears

The Old Field Pt is one impressive looking building. Solid walls of granite blocks two feet thick look like they can withstand anything nature can throw at them. If the shape looks familiar it is because there are five other lighthouses with pretty much the same design that are scattered around Long Island Sound.
The very first light built here was back in 1824 but wasn't really up to the task. So in 1868 six of these lights were built with the idea to make the lights strong enough to never need replacing. A bit of overkill perhaps but the lights do indeed look like they will last at least forever and perhaps even a bit longer.
The light itself is not open to the public but there are certain days when the property is open to stroll about. When you get up close you can see how large the building is and that it would indeed make a fine house.
Certainly a lighthouse with five other copies cannot be called unique, but after these were construction none others like it were built. They were expensive to build but strong enough to laugh as the decades and even the centuries roll by. read more
