Sigh...second time in a row where Oishi validated that it is not what it use to be. It saddens me to say this bc Oishi was in our top 3. Unfortunately, bento box steak was chewy, dried out and could not eat it. Expected better for $30 since it is not a large portion. Chicken also dried out like it was sitting out too long or not quality. Sticky rice was pasty. Bang bang shrimp had too many shells and also over fried or dried out. Sushi rolls not plump like it use to be. Saturday night and sad to see tables were not turning over. At least "take out" looked busy. In fact, I called the restaurant twice at two different times and frustrating that no one answered the phone. When I arrived and asked if the phones were working I was told he is too busy to answer. Hmm. Not good. Our server was sweet and friendly but she disappeared when we needed her a few times. Spent too much time trying to flag her down. That took away from special conversation with friends. We were all fans of Oishi but not rushing back. I miss BYOB...however, at least they have a cork fee ($15) if you choose byob. On a good note they offer Happy hour till 6pm on Saturdays. And, it is a nice atmosphere. read more

Itadakimasu! Quite good and well-made Japanese dishes and tasty indeed! We started off with some pan-fried pork gyoza and they were delicious with a juicy meaty interior and crispy-chewy skin. I had their udon noodle soup with vegetable and shrimp tempura (veggies were a broccoli floret, slices of onion, sweet potato, and kombucha). This was very good: the soup broth was mild and flavorful with a nice amount of baby bok choi, green onion, and tempura batter strips. The tempura itself was excellent: light friable batter, not oily or greasy. My wife had a chirashi salad which she said was very good, fresh and tasty fish. Yes I know this was sharing dining with senior citizens but I feel no shame. We both ordered bento boxes with a variety of food such as tempura, dumping, brown rice, teriyaki salmon, spicy beef bulgogi, stone chicken. We had a salad to start with ginger dressing. Every now and then you go to a place that you know will be good but don't go there that often. That place is Oishi in Newtown Pa, Bucks County. It is a special destination for special occasions. This one was for my daughter, Kait's birthday and her choice. So Kait, myself, & my son Ryan made the venture. As always we are greeted by a friendly person at the front are and taken to our reserved seating. It is always a nice atmosphere with a lot of chatter, means to me people are enjoying themselves. We were taken care of be a nice polite waitress who was quick to take our order. We started with a dumpling platter and Sofia roll; both great beginners before the meal. Me and my daughter bothering had the Yakisoba noodles - me shrimp, kait beef. Ryan had the fried rice with beef. All entrees were delicious and always worth a repeat. We got our usual order. A pot of green tea, Tobiko sushi, hamachi, maguro and salmon sashimi. I thought the maguro was excellent my wife liked the hamachi best. I noticed the tell-tale membrane in the fish was quite noticeable and was un-chewable and I left it on the plate. The Tobiko was excellent. Portions are noticeably smaller & prices higher. Service was top notch it was 6pm on a Friday. We then ordered a few rolls. Shrimp tempura supreme which was very good, a Dragon and a New Age II. The dragon was good but again noticeably smaller than during previous visits. The New Age was large with a lot of fish in there but again the fish had a bit of the off-putting rubbery membranes between the sections. Not what we expect from this place. This is and has been our favorite sushi place in the area. We know the owner Sae, and it is with profound sadness that we write this review. Unfortunately I need to report a few changes that we have noticed over the past couple of year's. Sae was not in the restaurant and we would have spoken to him had he been there. Ambiance is basically same as it ever was except there is no sushi bar - a casualty of covid and one of our favorite experiences when coming here. We would not mind paying more as long as the quality was the same high level that it had always been. Sadly the Quality of the food and in particular the sashimi has gone down. Specifically the sizes of the portions are half of what they used to be and the quality has not measured up - all with a noticeable price increase. Service is still pretty high end and during our last visit we received excellent service from Ashley. We will likely return at some point but this place has slipped in our view. Came here on a Friday night evening to celebrate my girlfriend's bday. The restaurant was packed. Thank god we had a reservation. We ordered many different rolls and every one was delicious . My favorite was the Sophia Roll. The restaurant is byob which is always a plus. In fact, I brought a bottle of wine to enjoy and it dropped on their floor . This is my go to place for sushi, but what is happening? Look at my pictures. Where is the fish in the sushi? I feel like I'm getting a lot of avocado, cucumber, and like this little tiny piece of fish in there. Other than that, I usually love your sushi. I always order the same thing which is why I find this perplexing. And I also enjoy your coconut shrimp soup. I think for what we pay for some pieces of fish, maybe the pieces can be a lil larger? Mediocre food- sushi was just okay. Nigiri was okay. The one star is for the worst service ever! I spilled a little bit of my drink and had to use everyone's napkins at my table. No big deal- but when we asked the server for more napkins, she left the wet pile of napkins on our table for the entirety of the meal. No refills. No checking in on us. The food was very good. The Tuna Tataki and Tuna Sashimi rolls were excellent. The rolls had a nice amount of caviar. Chicken Satay was very tender and the peanut dipping sauce was so good. Chicken Yakatori was also tender. Chicken Bulgoki was fantastic and the portion size was huge. However, while the Oishi Teriyaki Shrimp and Scallops were delicious, the portion size was a bit small. Overall we were satisfied with the food and service. Their new location is nicely decorated but the front area is staged for takeout orders and it really detracts from the vibe. The servers are dressed appropriately but the rest of the staff including the ones that seat you are dressed sloppily... old jeans and tshirts. I shouldn't be surprised because most of the patrons were dressed worse. Dirty jeans, old running shorts, sweat shirts, ripped tshirts, etc. Considering the prices, location and decor, they should enforce a better dress code. I don't think we'll go back. read more

Another restaurant that went downhill so bad, we will not be going back. Everything was bad. Service was the worst I have had in any restaurant ever. Server forgot to serve the lettuce wraps and we never got our rice. Table was never cleared (soup bowls remained for our entire meal). Soup was served lukewarm at best. Food quality subpar, and prices went up significantly. Our table was next to the service station and the bus person hit my chair with a bussing cart about 20 times. There should not have been a table there. This was one of our favorites in the area, but we are done. Save your time (and money) and skip this place. read more

Newtown is a little far from where I live but the drive is so worth it when I am in the mood for some Korean food or Sushi! First, the sushi: It's always so flipping FRESH! I never had sushi or sashimi here where it wasn't fresh. On top of that, they have tons of different sashimi/sushi options! I don't really eat uni from a lot of places but this place, I always get my uni, with quail egg and ikura with quail egg. Now moving on to the roll: I usually don't like getting rolls from sushi restaurants because they either put too much rice or it's flavorless. But I love their shrimp tempura supreme as well as their spider roll. I always get the right sushi to rice ratio and it always tastes so great! Finally Korean food: I love getting the Korean food here because it's pretty authentic without paying so much on galbi or Gopdol. Sometimes I come here just craving their gopdol! To sum it up, everything is so good here! from their sushi to their kitchen food and even their coconut ice cream with peanuts!! On top of that, the bathroom is always clean and the service is always awesome! I never had an issue of waiting for my server to get to my table! Oishi is a nice spot where I have been for lunch a few times since it's near my office. I have gotten the lunch bento each time, which comes with salad, fruit, vegetable gyoza, rice, miso soup, and a couple pieces of California roll. The bulgogi is sweet, but delicious and comes with grilled onions. The ginger dressing on the salad is probably the best I've had, and the miso soup is very good too. I'm not a big fan of California rolls in general, so I won't judge them on it. Gyoza are good, but nothing too special, I wouldn't probably order them on their own, but I like them with the bento. The ambiance is nicer than you'd expect from a strip mall. It's a little expensive for lunch at $11-15 + tip, but not that bad. Newtown is pretty expensive in general, so it's really not out of the usual. Totally random note - the tap water was gross, had a really strong taste. Not a big deal, just something I noticed, so if you dislike mineral-y tap water like me, skip it or order a drink. read more

Oishi is a very reliable sushi spot in an area that doesn't have a whole lot of solid sushi options. After my first visit, I was on the fence. While the fish was very fresh, the rolls seemed to be a bit generic and some were so heavily sauced, it was a bit off-putting. However, my wife is a big fan so I got to have more experiences and in that time, Oishi has really grown on me. In fact, I now consider it to be one of my go to Sushi/Asian restaurants in the Newtown area. Some of my favorites from the sushi menu are the tuna, yellowtail, and salmon New Age roll, the Screaming Spicy and the riceless sushi apps. All great. Aside from quality sushi, Oishi also has a nice selection of non-sushi fare including Gopdol Bibimbap, Thai curry, Korean style dumplings and more, so there's something for everyone. I've been going to Oishi for many years, even back when it was in the other location by the former pottery barn. A few times the food wasn't up to their usual standards, but overall, the food is good. I am only giving 3 stars because of their lack of customer service and their abysmal website. It is wrong- the hours are wrong- it doesn't open at 430 or 1130, they don't answer the phone until 5 or noon when they say it's open at 11:30. I mentioned that several times in the past years but obviously they don't care. The menu under the giant heading MENU on their website is wrong. I did not appreciate being talked down to like I was an idiot by the 2 people at the front, even after I showed them proof of the menu I was using. Came here recently on an adult night out. Overall, I was pleased with our meal but there were some issues. Oishi mush be a beloved restaurant in Newtown because it was packed with a large crowd in the waiting area. I was told that our reservations were made three weeks in advance. The restaurant has tile flooring and absolutely no sound barriers to keep the decibel levels down. It was extremely difficult to understand what my guests were saying even though they were right next to me. This was a big minus which can be somewhat abated by the owners by installing some sound dampeners around the rather large restaurant. My King Crab Salad which was the most expensive salad had practically no King Crab. While I know that it is expensive, I should have put all of the King Crab onto a spoon to show how little there was. The balsamic dressing was not light and enhancing the salad, but instead overpowered it. The Vertical Spring Rolls were light and tasty, and the duck sauce had a nice spice punch to it. I shared these, and they were well received. My Sofia Roll which had lots of seafood within also was a hit. I wish they had a sashimi version of this which I would have preferred. My wife had salmon which was overcooked and I blame that on the very crowded restaurant and cooks that were probably not checking their work as carefully as they should have in the rush. Her Miso soup was also not that good as it was rather bland and not zesty as others she has had in the past. Her house salad with ginger dressing was just ok. The ginger dressing tasted old. Last complaint was that two of the four wine glasses brought to the table (it's BYOB) were dirty and replacements had to be requested. Again, maybe because of a busy kitchen, but this should have been spotted by multiple staff before being brought to our table. The other couple's food was very good including a nice Spider Roll, and Noodle Dishes with extra shrimp and beef were very filling and tasty. Again, I'd come back, but maybe during a not-so-crowded time. $130 not including tip for four. No drinks (BYOB), just water. read more

Came here on a Monday for lunch, not busy at all. This also isn't my first time coming here but haven't been here in awhile after the pandemic. Not sure what happened but something needs to be improved. Understood the reason for price increase but how are you going to serve this miso soup in a plastic bowl that should actually be thrown out and not used on your customers? Would you serve food in a bowl that's cracked or has a piece missing? This wouldn't even be accepted at a cheap Chinese/Japanese take out place, but a place like Oishi? It's time to invest in some new bowls. Server was not friendly at all, never came to check in or ask if we needed anything else. She had a pissed off/annoyed look the whole time from what I saw. Instead, she came and just dropped off the check while we're eating. At that point we were only sitting down for about 20 min, at most. We never asked for it. Plain rude. Charged me $7 for a roll when on the menu it says $6. (It also had $6 on their on line menu) They tell me no, it's now $7, price went up. Ok .... Then maybe update the menus to reflect this? First the positive. The atmosphere is lovely, when not crowded. When crowded, it is very noisy. The service was average. The host, upon entering the restaurant didn't even look up when he said, "can I help you?" Never smiled and was rather dismissive when I stated that we had a reservation. Now the food. Disappointing at best. My vegetarian dish was terribly over cooked rendering all the vegetables soft to the point of falling apart in my mouth. Flavorless as well. Two tablespoons of hot sauce couldn't make up for the lack of flavor. My dish was supposed to feature mushrooms, and there were few present. My two friends also had lackluster meals, one of which was a sushi dish. The other had overcooked shrimp and soggy vegetables as well. We will not be returning. read more

The service was poor in regards to silverware, getting water getting napkins it just took forever to get their attention. There's only one place to go for sushi in Newtown/Richboro. And this is it. Yes, chicken teriyaki is on the menu but a brief glance around an always busy restaurant indicates sushi & sashimi are the popular items. And reservations are a must (even on weeknights). The fish is as flavorful and delicious as anything I've had in California. The only drawback is the lack of a liquor license (BYOB your own sake) and a somewhat noisy dining area.
