    Oink. The tiny shop.
    John S.

October 10, 2023. Tuesday. Dinner. My wife and visited here on the suggestion of the hostel host. It's a small shop in Madrid that you'd barely fit five inside. This place had a few people in front of us and offered small, medium and large bocadillos. They also had empanadas and freshly squeezed orange juice. I ordered the large jamon iberico bocadillo (4.20 euros) and a pork shoulder and cheese empanada (2.90 euros). The great thing about this place is that they offer you the option of heating the sandwich and they have a special tomato spread that keeps the sandwich moist. The other bocadillo shops we visited didn't have this option. The sandwich itself was large, moist and nicely salty. This was the best jamon iberico bocadillo I had on my entire trip. The empanada was dry and a bit bland. My wife loved her fresh squeezed orange juice. This is a small, hole in the wall bocadillo joint with very good bocadillos at a very low price.

The sandwich was good, meat was salty but bread balanced out the salt in the meat. It was filling and good price. You can walk around or go sit in the park.

Small shop right on the Gran Via. You could only fit maybe 5 people in there max. You can pick up random small sandwiches here including the famous jambon sandwich. We also tried the empanada's. All the items were ok. Seems like the chef is a little heavy handed with the salt. I know that is how the ham is made but the empanada was also salty. Cool spot to grab something while walking down the Gran Via but not something I would seek out. It is an affordable snack which is always a plus. 3 star spot.

Need a quick and cheap snack? Here's your small street-side shop that can be overlooked in an instant just walking by. The bocadillos de jamon can definitely be used as a holdover meal. The baguette was fresh, jamon soft, and they'll offer to toast it for you. I wouldn't say this is an absolute must have, but I won't argue with the price and various sizes. They also have other small snacks like empanadas and other pastries, but the sandwich showcase will catch your eyes.

There are so many small bocadillo (sandwich) shops in Madrid on the streets that it's hard to pick just one. (Sandwich shops are the hot dog carts of NYC, one on every corner.) My brother and sister in law had discovered Oink on their last trip to Madrid and were eager to share the experience with us. The sandwiches come in SM, MED, LG, and involve a crusty bread with an aioli or tomato spread, and your choice of cured meat. I tried all the offerings (yep you heard me right) and my favorites were the chorizo and the salchichon (a spicy type of salami). It's easy to miss this place when walking by, but if you want a great sandwich for 2 euro- this is the spot.

I had a Bocadillo Mediano with Jamón (EUR 2.70) which was really tasty. It is great that they put tomato sauce and olive oil on the bread for extra flavor.

Great food at very low prices. Jamón iberico. What more could you want? I can't think of a sandwich I would rather have. Spectacular place.

Great food and service. Easy to pop in and get an amazing snack/lunch. They have empanadas too with donuts.

Great ham, lousy bread. Order the medium or large and ditch the bread. It's right next to the Casino Gran Via.

Delicious, cheap, and fast. I had a medium sized Iberian for a quick lunch, and it was perfect.

The chorizo was solid, but the bocadillo de calamares was on another level. Fried to perfection, served on soft bread, and the lemon aioli really set it off. We kept hearing from people all over Madrid that La Campana was the place to go, and I even overheard multiple walking tours throughout the week calling this THE spot for a bocadillo de calamares. After going myself, I completely get it. It is conveniently located right in Plaza Mayor where there are several bocadillo shops, but this is THE one you want. They move fast too. I was in and out of line and already eating in less than 5 minutes. Perfect spot if you want a quick but filling Spanish classic. Next time I am definitely sitting inside and trying more off the menu.

You also have the option to purchase aioli which pairs really well with it. The bread was warm and fresh and everything together makes it clear why this is their most popular item. At under 5 euros, it is an incredible value. The service is straightforward. The employees do not really speak much English, but they are nice and get you taken care of quickly. The shop is located right next to another nearly identical spot that sells the same thing, but La Campana is definitely the more popular one. It gets crowded very fast so it helps to arrive early or be ready to squeeze in. The interior is pretty bare bones with small tables and chairs that fit about 25 people, but it serves its purpose and keeps the focus on the food.

The tandoori chicken is not anything like tandoori. It's very mildly flavored. It was a plain sandwich, as described on the menu, with just meat and nothing else; no butter or mayo, though they have other variations with more ingredients such as lettuce and tomato. Overall I quite liked it. However if I had known earlier their 'pollo' was processed chicken cut into chunky slices, I might not have ordered it, but I thought it was a decent little sandwich. The bread had a nice texture; not crusty, but not too soft. The jamón with tomato and olive oil was actually good quality jamón. I loved that they served a handful of potato chips with the montaditos! Those were perfect. The salad had an iceberg lettuce base (which unfortunately seems to be the standard lettuce in Spain), a good amount of tuna, some other toppings including crispy fried onion bits. Green salads are not a standard on menus in Spain so it was a nice option to have and my husband really liked it. The great thing about the mini-sandwich size is that you can order just enough for your appetite, and you can try different flavors. This site had indoor tables, outdoor tables, and apparently a second floor. It was popular with young people hanging out with friends. It's convenient to the Atocha train station, nearby hotels, and the Reina Sofía museum. They also have Ben and Jerry's ice cream desserts. Staff that night spoke English and were efficient.

But whereas they skimped on portions, they're pretty much packed with flavor. I had the chorizo and brie (which the nephew ate by accident & i had to eat his order: salmon and cream cheese) and a hotdog. Because I felt cheated out of my chorizo and brie, i had to order a third one, plus get a sweet sandwich dessert consisting of chocolate bread, oreos and dulce de leche. Also, I asked for beer but they poured me a mug of apple cider (€2ish). The guys who work here are super nice and alternate playing pop (ed sheeran?) music and heavy metal. They also have a tv on - futbol is on, of course. Wifi is free!!!
