Really enjoyed Mercado de San Miguel, even if it's the more touristy food market in Madrid. Came later in the evening. Must gets include - jamón ibérico from Puesto Carrasco Ibéricos - olives and vermut from The Hour of the Vermouth - wine from Pinkleton & Wine - codfish from La Casa del Bacalao There's also a Spanish omelet vendor but it was okay. Great energy in the market. Can be difficult to find a seat at a table but there's plenty of standing counters along the perimeter. read more

So this was one of the places everyone recommended we had to stop at while we were in Madrid for a couple days on our way to Portugal, and one of the most disappointing. Don't get me wrong - they do indeed have a whole bunch of food vendors that all looked extremely good. Some of them were tourist-priced (ok, a majority of them were tourist-priced), but none of them looked *bad*, just not *necessarily* worth the price, when you could go any number of places nearby and get food as good, for cheaper. But there were definitely some hidden gems, including one absolutely wonderful tapas place that we ordered a bunch of little tostas from, of all different sorts, that we were absolutely impressed by and happy with all of. And of course, the vendor I had originally been most excited about, La Hora del Vermut, which does indeed offer both very inexpensive, great "house" vermouth, and very affordable fancy vermouths. I would've loved to hang out at a bar like that... if I could do so and also *move*. See, the thing is... this market is absolutely not big enough for all its accolades. As Yogi Berra may or may not have ever said, "No one goes there nowadays, it's too crowded." At least I probably wouldn't ever go back there... we could barely hear to order tapas at the tapas place, and good luck finding a place to eat if you're not taking it to go. Good luck actually making it to one of the vendors further away from the entrance, either. It was an absolute madhouse, so we ordered a bunch of tostas at once, I braved the insanity to get a couple glasses of vermouth and met my wife outside the actual market to eat them on the steps. And that was the *off* season - if it's like that in January, I could only imagine it in May! One of my favorite stops in Madrid. I had been looking up fun places to eat and this popped up. I love open markets like this and it had the feel of Pike's Place in Seattle (minus the fish throwing) or Granville Island in Vancouver. Lots of little places to choose from and the ability to try many different things in one place. The night we went it was crazy but no line was terribly long. The vendors definitely had how to handle crowds down. I stopped by the Albondigas (meatball) stand and the mozzarella stand and grabbed a limoncello spritz. Got a pistachio raspberry pastry on our way out as well. This spot was hustling and bustling for a reason, it was a great place to grab a bite and sit a second. read more

This market though is absolutely packed to the point where it is quite difficult to maneuver, so it is not a recommendation to dogpile on given how many other places have equally good if not better food. (Crab Roll: B) - Imagine the combination of a lobster roll with a california roll, two tasty things. The concept is good and the crab is a blend of imitation and real crab. However, the food is ice cold and the brioche could benefit from being toasted. (Dumplings: B) - Eight flavors each with their own unique sauce and accompaniments. I generally like the concept with intresting blends like hoisin duck or prawn mayo, with the wrappers being thin and well made. I think this type of dish would benefit from being at a full service restaurant that is able to serve this made to order hot and enforce clean plating as the skills are there. (Churros: D) - Was so intrigued to try three colored churros which reminds me of larger pockys, but I wish the flavor of each color were stronger; an intense matcha or strawberry flavor churro would hit hard. Out of the many things I tried, there is one item that was completely amazing and that was the the BBQ pork in a bao bun. Find it and order several before they run out! And I found great enjoyment engaging with so many individuals throughout my visit here. Although we initially went for dinner, we stayed at least 4 hours because of the great conversations we were having. When I booked a trip to Madrid, I told my group the only thing on my must-do list was visit Mercado de San Miguel and eat Jamon. Wow, my dream came true and my best life was unlocked when I experienced this Mercado for the first and hopefully not last time. Imagine a beautiful building lined with stalls serving you the best Spanish tapas you can find. I started with a cone of Jamon, we got Pinxtos, I drank tinto de verano, ate ahi tuna and ended with the most divine pulpo salad ever. Each stall has areas to perch and eat your snacks and every stall has its own payment system so you can just continue to eat, and hop around until you're full. Pretty amazing farmers market that offers you variety in bites that and you definitely can find what you are looking for amongst the many serving out there. We stopped by during our first day in Madrid and got to try a few things that really filled us up. We stopped into Mercado de San Miguel before dinner to see what they have. They've got a bunch of different food stalls, all of which offer different food, which I thought was cool BUT quite pricey. We tried some olives from one stall & they were 17€ for 3 olive kebabs. I will say, it was tasty! Then we had tried this Iberian jamon w/ egg + chorizo on a hotdog bun from another stall. It was all right. The one we were really looking forward to was the fruit stall, which had a bunch of different fruit displayed beautifully & they let you choose which fruits you want + size of cup. The fruit ended up being not too great. Most of the fruits we got (watermelon, orange, papaya, mango) were overly ripe & actually tasted flavorless. Was lacking sweetness. A trip to Madrid is incomplete with a visit or few visits to San Miguel market. It's this mid size market with tons of food/drink vendors you can grab eat and drink. Let's begin with the food. My favorites here are the open faced tapas which are sold by the pc. These are mini toasts with seafood toppings from mackerel, salmon , octopus and what not, priced around 2/3 euros each. My second best quick picks have to be the olive skewers with endless meats, seafoods and pickled vegetables these are to die for. Lots of other eating options from crips, oysters, burgers, sandwiches, fried seafood and much more. There are endless drink options from wines to house sangria. This place is always packed and busy. It tends to slow down a bit at night. There is a small sitting area in the centre of the market. There are clean bathrooms located on the lower level. The best part of this market is it's open till late and we would come late at night to grab some tapas, olives and sangrias. read more

This is a great market hall, a lot of places jammed in here, and a lot of choices for food. The place was humming the afternoon I went, I met some friends who already had a table, but every other seat was taken. This place really looks cool- all these food stands have glass cases showing all the food, not to mention the plates of food sitting on top- definitely a Tapas smorgasbord! Mercado de San Miguel is what I envision heaven to be, at least heaven for a foodie. This is the ultimate food hall with many different stands that specializes in certain foods or meals. No matter the time of day you will find this place bustling with energy. We ordered grilled octopus and vieras (scallops), which were excellent. Then my brother found a booth where they claimed to have the best garlic gambas (shrimp), which I see myself agreeing with. We then tried a stand with outstanding fried calamari, which unlike the US counterparts the breading does not overwhelm the calamari taste. After all these savory treats we were ready for some sweets, we found a stand with basque cheesecake and what seems to be a Dubai molten chocolate cake. Food in Spain is AMAZINGGGGG.....there are those among us who might even say better than certain other European countries that are also very proud of their culinary traditions. Therefore it's hardly astonishing to find that public markets in Spain are centered often around more than just produce and cooking ingredients themselves, but numerous food vendors as well. Mercado de San Miguel is one such place as this, supercharged with a slightly frenetic tourist energy and potentially elbow-to-elbow crowds at those peak seasons of the year and times of the day. Being located along the main thoroughfare that is Calle Mayor linking Puerta del Sol to the Palacio Real area (with Plaza Mayor enroute), unless your walking at the crack of dawn in January, you're bound to run into about several hundred other people (tourists) as you approach this building. Don't be deterred--stay the course and strategically meander your way through the market along the narrow gaps in floor space when other tourists stop to gawp and drool at the vendor stalls brimming with foods galore--butchers, bakers, fresh vegetables, seafood, pre-cut fruits and juices, legs of Iberico jamon, chorizo and other preserved meats, cheeses, wine bar, tapas, the list goes on. After checking out the stalls, try something for yourself. Sure it's a bit of a tourist trap and maybe priced higher than some other local markets, but if you're already there and want to experience a Spanish market during your short stay while checking out other tourist attractions, this is a passable introduction. Unlike some other tourist-centric places they actually do have pretty tasty food options here, so it won't be for nought! Look to spend 30-45min here if you plan to grab a bite and do a little souvenir shopping. read more

Definitely a place for tourists. I've bene living in Madrid for three months now and just went here for the first time because I had some family visiting and they wanted to try it. It's expensive and for sure not the best of tapas/food you can find in Madrid. It's a place for you to see, but certainly not a "must see." You won't find many locals here, in fact I think it was all visitors. Very crowded but cool to see all the vendors. The first time we went here, Sunday at lunch time, it was so packed that it's hard to even walk around. No place to stand and eat. We went the next day for try #2. It was slightly better, at least we could find an empty corner to stand and eat. We had the fried seafood mix from Pescaito Frito. Yum. This is a popular mercado located near Plaza Mayor, so it's super busy. The market isn't very big either, so getting around gets quite hectic. We were shoulder to shoulder with people as you're tangled between lines and people just getting through. There's some communal tables in the middles, but getting a seat is nearly impossible. Your best bet is to find a standing counter along the windows. We ended up trying a couple of stalls here. I got two Salmon Pinchos (€6 for 2) and the Spanish Omelette Sampler (€10) while the boyfriend had the Hot Dog and Cheese Pizza. The salmon pinchos were good and fresh, so not bad. The omelette was a fun taster, but the various flavors weren't too distinctive nor tasty really. Plus, the dish was cold from sitting around. Finally, the hot dog and pizza were lackluster and also cold. We almost couldn't even finish this one. Overall, walk around and check it out if you please but it's really like any other mercado. This is a tourist trap, although it is fun and visually delightful. A lot of cities have similar places. An old market, now filled with modern booths for gourmet food. This is definitely not a place for locals. Prices are high. And the food is visually pleasing, but no better (and can be worse) than what you can get outside the market. We went to a fruit stand, and the fruit was expensive and not tasty (and since we were not allowed to pick our own, we were at the mercy of a grumpy server). We also got sandwiches, and they cost at least 50% more than businesses a few blocks away, but the quality of the bread and meat was lower that we had at the airport! Very disappointing. This is close to the Plaza Mayor, and if you don't want to walk through small streets looking for smaller businesses to buy food, this is a good bet. But it's busy and expensive, and you can do better if you just wander the city a bit more. read more
