I am also a Pilates instructor of 18 years specializing in hypermobile people and rehab post physical therapy. Front desk dosnt say hello. Not once in three in office visits. My personal pet peeve. She is deeply uninterested in the customer service side of her job. Sets a tone of "we don't give a crap that you're here" as soon as you walk in. The first person I saw could not explain to me what he wanted in a way I could Understand. He gave me a whole book of an exercise protocol but not which exercises to do or how to do them as he would like. I was lost a demoralized and my body felt worse. Then I saw someone who may have been one of the higher up pt people in the practice. She sat in the waiting room training the new front desk girl and complaining about how bored she was until my session started. she accompanied what I assume to be a newer pt into my session. She then explained to me basic postural principles until I stopped her and told her she was wasting my time because as I mentioned before, I'm a Pilates instructor. This visit was a bit better. But not by much. I at least got a couple exercises they wanted me to do and I think I understood how to do them. The next time I came in, no bored pt. Just the new pt. And she proceeded to suggest all the exercises I'm already doing that aren't helping. And then she did some muscle activation work that I still couldnt really feel. At one point I asked her why we were squeezing a ball and she said for your pelvic. When I asked, My pelvic what? She was unable to tell me what she thought the exercise was doing aside from bringing to pelvis to neutral. This dosnt make a ton of sense to me. So I asked for more. She didn't have it. Her inability to articulate the goal of the exercise to me worried me enough not to come back. I had really high hopes for this place. I tried to communicate that I needed their eye on my form because I can't tell what I'm doing wrong. I don't know if the believed me because I had to work very hard to get them to tell me wha they saw in my muscle engagement or alignment. I felt unheard and unwelcome for each and every one of my four visits.

My nephew went into treatment here several months ago and it was a nightmare. He has mental health…read moreissues on top of being an addict and The staff was well aware of his issues. He is on medication one of which is a controlled substance. They agreed to dole out his medications to him on a daily basis as prescribed. We found out that they gave him all of his medications at one time, including the controlled substance. Their response was they didn't have the staff to accommodate daily med distributions. We were shocked at their response. Things took a really bad turn when another patient sold my nephew meth and he went on a downward spiral. The disappointing thing about this was their complete lack of professionalism in dealing with the situation. When we found out that he was given all of his at one time they were incredibly defensive and refused to answer questions as to why they did this. We also asked a lot of questions as to why and how he was able to buy methamphetamine from a fellow patient in the program, again, they were defensive and dismissive in their reaction. I would strongly recommend not going to this facility. San Francisco is currently having a breakdown in the oversight of treatment facilities and this is a clear case of that.

What first caught my attention was the information available on the website and how they claimed to "not be another" physical therapy office. As any intrigued customer would, I called and was greeted by a very friendly, competent, and helpful administrator, Toya. Toya provided a lot of great insight about the company and even called my insurance provider (Blue Cross Blue Shield) to ensure that my insurance would be accepted before scheduling my initial visit. Toya really is awesome and is one of the reasons that I chose Therapydia. Upon arrival to the Embarcadero Center, where the office is located, parking is available in the underground structure and Therapydia validates parking. Instead of paying $18, I only paid $4. The actual office is upstairs between a hair studio and other business. The office was very clean, inviting, and provided enough privacy that other patrons wouldn't know what's happening. I was originally scheduled to meet with Allison, but, I worked with Marcus instead. Marcus was friendly and knowledgeable. I was so impressed with her knowledge on herbs and food, I asked for her card (even though you're not supposed to do that there) --- it turns out, she is also a holistic nutrionist & herbalist. A year later and I am now working with her as I have too many food allergies to list here and I'd like to eliminate them and their symptoms when I consume them. She is helping me find my optimal diet while also working on other health issues (like performing cranial sacral work for my back and jaw pain). The best part about Carolynn is that she looks at your health from all the way back. She really gets to the nitty-gritty to figure out why/how things went wrong. She is also supportive of western meds if that is part of your regular routine and you are scared to go off them. I had no idea what kind of an exceptional team laid in front of me when I met them. Fast forward a year, I was at Burning Man and paid a visit to the temple, and I had a proper release. I found myself crying in public off to the side with my partner holding me, and I was just letting it all out. Tears were flooding, the people at the temple around me were so supportive, giving a gentle tap on the shoulder saying "everything is going to be all right." After that 60 minutes or so, I left the temple feeling so light and calm and happy that I got to experience my Dad for 32 years of my life. Dr. Guo taught me that trauma and normal grieving are separate things. For me up until that point in life, I thought the two went hand in hand. With her help and Spravato ketamine therapy, I was able to separate these two complex things in life. She reminded me that healing is not linear and that when grieving does come, don't be afraid of it or to be triggered, and to not run away from it. As I came back from Burning Man and attended my next appointment at NUMA Clinic, I wanted to share this experience with Dr. Guo. She has this magic ability to really make you bring your most authentic self, and she brought me back to exactly how I was feeling at the temple. As I was sharing my stories, I broke into tears, and to my surprise, Dr. Guo broke into tears as well. We spent the remainder of the session crying happy tears. PHYSICAL THERAPY:…read more One physical therapist would always be on their cell phone and make small talk instead of watching my form during each 45-minute session. Another one was extremely impatient when delivering a life sentence diagnosis. I couldn't tell if they were just having a bad day or just taking it out on me. Either way, it was extremely unhelpful. They lectured me for 40 minutes about how my life will be filled with injuries and that I should stop getting medical imaging. I only got imaging when I did what that physical therapist said I could do and either didn't get better or got worse after six months, something I didn't have the heart to tell this physical therapist. The only other time a different healthcare provider scolded me was to quit a stressful job. I could at least sense that they did it out of care for me, though they were still telling me that it was all my fault. But during this lecture, I only felt dismissed with each gentle, diplomatic question I asked. They kept telling me to trust my body, something I gently reminded them that studies show is very hard to do with the diagnosis they gave. During their lecture, I asked if they could muscle test me so I could know which of their exercises to do more of. Muscle testing takes at most three minutes. They refused until I started crying. I've never cried in front of a physical therapist or doctor before, even when they delivered damning news. When they finally muscle tested me, they gave advice that contradicted advice they lectured me for 40 minutes for. Had I not asked repeated to be muscle tested, I would have gone home to do exercises that would have created more imbalance in my body. They told me there's no hope though they aren't an expert in some of my issues. I asked if they might ever take classes on one of my issues that they never looked into and I finally learned that they aren't an expert on, and they didn't even bother to test or observe or ask for previous medical records. I got no reply. I don't expect anyone to be an expert in my issues. But I do expect basic politeness instead of defensiveness and impatience. Instead they told me not to do any of the physical therapy exercises from a different provider who at least gave exercises for one of my issues. They also repeatedly told me if I'm not in pain, I'm fine. That's something that isn't possible for someone with my diagnosis. I told them that I lived that way for decades, only to get more and more injured in my whole body. Rule #1 for anyone in the healing world: unless you're god or you know every bodywork modality in the world, don't take away all hope someone has. I'll never book with a provider before confirming what they know about my issues or insisting that they look at my previous medical records. BILLING DOESN'T LIST DATES OF SERVICE OR SEND BILLS TO PATIENT BY MAIL OR EMAIL: Their new system stopped mailing bills to me without telling me. They started mailing bills to the guarantor of the health insurance account, which looked like solicitations for donations. Meanwhile I was getting mail asking for donations. I can't make this up. So the guarantor (my partner) didn't open letters from UCSF because they never went to UCSF for healthcare. When my partner finally opened the mail months later, they saw they were bills for me. None were itemized. So I emailed asking for dates of service and to make sure I didn't get charged late fees because when I log it, it still shows that I signed up for paperless bills, though I never got one for years! Five business days later, I still haven't heard from them. And there's no option to talk to billing on the phone.

My doctor referred me to St Franchis for PT. They called me to schedule an appointment. I called back, let a VM as no one picked up even though it was business hours. I called back the next day again and they asked me to check with my insurance if they were in network. I called my insurance to confirm that yes, they were in network. Then I called back to make an appointment. They dug around for 10 mins and came back and said they lost the referral from my doctor. So I could wait a week until someone who is out can come back and find the referral, or I can ask my doctor to re-send the referral. I then had to call my doctor again to re-send the referral asap. So far I've probably spent 45 mins trying to get an appointment here, and I don't have one yet. I'm sure this place is great based on reviews, but I see some others have complained about the support staff, and I think it's valid as it's disappointing to have to work so hard to pay someone else money.
