If you go, make sure to bring windbreaker / raincoat and sweater or jacket. The owner's wife Heather is terrific. ---- In response to the business owner's comments (see below), his son did not do a good job of making the trip fun, comfortable or safe. He's not a good communicator which is important when you're working with families. It also wasn't to the best idea to go so far out, which was his call. Fortunately, I was eventually able to talk him into staying a bit closer in after a long discussion. The young captain spent much of our time out there working on the boat. After his repairs to try and fix the broken speedometer, the boat wouldn't start and we were stuck out at sea for hours. The young captain's plan was to drift back towards shore until we were in cell phone range. No flares. No emergency devices to contact anyone. No joke. It would have been a very cold and uncomfortable night and it was quite an ordeal for us and our kiddos. Fortunately, I was able to contact emergency services and got us rescued. I tried to be pretty nice in my short review and focus on the positives, but I wouldn't use this charter company again and I certainly can't recommend them. Even if we hadn't had mechanical trouble, which happens, my family much preferred the way Maverick Charters handled my family's charter. The captain didn't have us towed by professionals because it would have cost him money. And the idea that we insisted on going out in a storm or that their poor decision making, lack of preparedness, and the captian's poor communication skills were our fault is just nonsense. They changed the time of our charter and we went along with it, just as we went along with all of the captain's decisions until realizing that he was incapable of handling the situation at hand. We all make mistakes and they're not bad people, but the owner lashing out at me over a bum cruise that we were still charged full price for is pretty gross. Your training, planning, maintenance and customer service skills need work. You can do better. Live and learn.

There is a boardwalk out to the large lake, but they have neglected it and there are more and more hundreds of square meters of water weeds clogging it. If they don't do something soon, the lake will become unusable. There is a 10 foot alligator in the small lake that you occasionally see, which is fun. He/she sometimes suns himself on the bank so be careful. After Milton and Helene, the squirrels that used to follow you around on the trail are nowhere to be seen, and very few birds either. I suppose over time they will repopulate the park. It's a great way to spend an hour or so.

The kayak was easy to steer, though my husband and I are both tall and it felt a bit cramped after about an hour -- not a deal breaker at all. The light attached to the kayak was a great touch and helped illuminate the fish we were spotting. We even stopped to feed the catfish and got an up-close view, which was really fun. Although the water was cold and Nolan mentioned some fish weren't out, we still saw plenty and thoroughly enjoyed the calm ride through Sarasota Bay with beautiful views of the city skyline. We got a nice tour passing by a mangrove and by the time we reached under the bridge where the catfish live, it was dark enough for our LED lights to illuminate the water so we could see and feed the catfish. Then it was a nice paddle back to shore. This is the perfect date night activity, whether you're beginners or have done it before. Only 2 people max can be in the same kayak as long as they are under the weight limit, so if you come in odd numbered parties, someone will have to be fine with kayaking alone.

This is actually a very nice park. There is plenty of room to just do whatever you want whether it…read morebe have a barbecue or birthday party or picnic or just go for a walk. I love how the boardwalk and trails intertwine with the surrounding nature and then open up once you get towards the lookout tower to give you great views of the surrounding landscape. I also thought that it was cool that the water sometimes flows below you as you walk on the boardwalk. You can stay on the boardwalk the entire time so your feet won't even get dirty. There are other paved and unpaved portions of the park that are away from the lookout tower where the grass is a bit more lush and you can do things like play frisbee or yoga. There are also open air bathrooms which makes it convenient in not having to look for somewhere to go outside the park. One thing I did find odd is that there are no windows on the bathroom. It's just open air so if anyone was walking by the bathroom they could look in on you dropping your number ones and number twos. It was nice to find a park though that had unimpeded access to the water and a great mix of nature so if you're trying to get fit or just relax, this is the park for you.
