The prices are what you would expect at any stationary store but the selection is huge! I couldn't even take everything in. I know there was a sticker that said something about being overstimulated and it applied. I need to go back when I have unlimited time to explore. I left with several pens, a couple of small notepads, and some stickers! If you need anything in this realm, this is the place to go in Lawrence. Right in the 800 block of Massachusetts which seems to be the street for shopping in Lawrence. Not only are the products and the staff amazing, but there's 2 gems at this shop you won't find anywhere else - Dave is the bomb, and the haunted bathroom experience is as well. I'm just letting you know to go and experience them. No way I am spoiling it even though I'm sure someone will! lol It won't be me! Love this local gem in Lawrence!

Well, actually it is, because it's full of cool stuff. Think gift shop + art shop + boutique curio, and maybe that *starts* to describe the space. There are plenty of keepsakes, art supplies, and gift ideas that will run your tab up very quickly. It's all good stuff, mind you, but it's almost like they should have an "I'll take one of everything package". The front of the store is mostly boutique-ish and has a small up and downstairs. You can find gifts for just about anyone, and this is the kind of place where you can stuff stockings or get something unique for that special someone. If you need ideas, then ask one of the staff who are always willing to help. If you need specifics in the art department, then there is a station in the back to help you with various items such as paper types or other supplies. The unique nature of some of the items leads to perhaps some higher prices, but the value is spot on. You're finding gifts, not clipping coupons, so enjoy and shop a little. For everything that you think might be marked a little high, just remind yourself that you probably aren't going to find that in very many other places. And that's the fun of shopping: just browsing when you have the time and maybe the resources, looking at things that you didn't know you were going to find, and in this case, helping a great small business thrive.

If traveling through Lawrence, visiting for a period of time, or if you live here full-time, you…read moremay someday find yourself needing a screwdriver, some WD-40, or God knows what. If so, there is a fair chance that you will find it at Cottins. I much prefer supporting small, local businesses rather than the large impersonal chain stores. Much closer to our home in Old East Lawrence than Home Depot and Menards, although much smaller, Cottins has a good selection of hardware items at reasonable prices. The thing I like best about Cottins is the friendly, personal attention you receive almost as soon as you walk in the door. If you have ever been to Home Depot, Lowes, and Menards, you know that trying to find an employee to answer a question or help you find something is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The employees at Cottins are not only friendly and helpful, they are very knowledgeable in a variety of DIY topics. A small space by hardware standards, they have an amazing selection of choices in almost every category. Every time I go there, I am greeted warmly and escorted directly to the specific item I need. Employees have spent 15 minutes with me helping me to find less than a dollar's worth of screws, now that's customer service! Customer service is such a rare comodity these days in the retail sector, but Cottins is the rare exception. Well done! CombatCritic Gives Cottins Hardware and Rental 9 Bombs Out Of 10 ... The first time I entered Cottin's, I did so with reluctance. I was concerned that as per usual,…read moresome older gent would look over my head to speak to my boyfriend about what he might be looking for today, making me feel invisible and like such a *girl.* Kind of like what happened to me when I used to go into certain chain electronics stores that have since gone out of business (yay!) in NYC. Not only did this not happen, I actually enjoyed my time in there the several times I've gone in. I kid you not! Now, I fully admit that I usually would only go into Cottin's because the K would be super enthusiastic about shopping in there and I can't say I share the same enthusiasm, but oh, OK, they have a lot of awesome garden stuff and hello, are those pink flamingoes?!?! There's a lot to love about Cottin's. They rent cotton candy (COTTIN Candy?!) and icee machines. They sell all kinds of tape. They sell a lot of different colored and sized novelty light bulbs. They sell old school Radio Flyer wagons. It feels like it could be 1950 in there, but with a 2010 sensibility. The staff, all young and friendly, rule the school. As Lydia A mentions below, they are part of what makes Cottin's such an enjoyable place to be. A "place to be"?! Yes! It's an experience! Even getting keys made is kinda fun (OK, well, that's an exaggeration. It is quick and painless, however!) OTOH, you'd have to drag me kicking and screaming into one of my most hated stores ever...HOME DEPOT. Blargh! Here's to the true mom & pop sensibility of Cottin's (check out their cute retro bumper stickers while you're there and slap one on your toolbox) with their fair prices, excellent customer service and the way they make you feel like anything is possible so I'm going to start building that garden shed I've always wanted...I JEST.

How do they accomplish this? Well, first and foremost, they do everything you'd EXPECT from a UPS store, and they do it efficiently and well. However, the major differentiator is that every single time I've been here (now numbering 20+ visits....{thanks Amazon}), no matter who is working, I receive the BEST customer service I've ever had at a UPS store. There have been younger folks and older folks, men and women...does not matter: everyone has been outstanding. THIS is my go-to UPS store. Even when it's out of my way, it's the one I'm coming to, due to my aforementioned issues with others. Thank you to the owner/operator/management of this location - it is truly a beacon of an example on how to run a shipping business with a smile, and it has not gone unnoticed!

I love the nostalgia factor of this gigantic, three story department store parked right in the middle of downtown Lawrence. My most recent trip was to scout out tux rentals and they could not have been more helpful. They were priced better than others I'd met with, and were friendly and on the ball. Definitely looking forward to sending the groomsmen here later on this year. I then spent some time shopping afterwards and they have some very cool things, albeit some of them are pretty high end. They have customized Jayhawk/Southern Tide shirts, well crafted dress shirts & polos, and some awesome KC Royals belts filling the guys section.
