Many many thanks to Mark Rutley, D.D.S "Rock" who helped my boyfriend Triston Jackson find amazing relief from extreme tooth pain! Amazing service from the moment I walked in the door! He is extremely thorough and communicates everything so clearly. And the staff is so welcoming and friendly. Best densit ever !!!! read more

While I'm sure Dr. Rutley is a nice person and appreciate his emergency services, he sat down right next to me with his MASK UNDER HIS CHIN on three occasions. I also noticed that some of his staff were wearing there masks under their noses as well. read more

I had the most painful toothache in my life, and I researched and found that this dentist would take you on short notice. When I was able to get ahold of him, he had a prescription ready for me to ease the pain until I could see him the next day (which helped me tremendously). When I saw the dentist, he was honest about my options and what he saw. I really appreciated everything he did! Very trustworthy! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Rutley for 20-plus years. Prior to meeting him it had been many years since I've seen a dentist because of my fear and I really needed to have work done . Other dentist gave painful shots and could seldom get me fully numb. His shots are almost painless and I experienced no pain during the procedures. He has kept my teeth in good condition and I am 67 years old. That's quite an accomplishment considering the condition of my teeth on my first appointment with him and my prior experience with other dentists. I would highly recommend him . read more

Yes this is as good as it gets! Dr Rutley was very skilled and knowledgeable in cosmetic and clinical dentistry, friendly and very communicative. So here is what happened last Thursday on 12/31/15, kinda the worst time and day to have this happen...my husband fell and broke 4 front teeth at 10pm. I called Dr Rutley for an emergency appointment and we were in his office on the 1st at 11am. After 5 hours of work and 4 root canals my husband got out of the office with beautiful temporary teeth until the porcelain permanent are put in place. No one can tell he had such work done and they look even better than his own teeth, all with no pain which is also very important. They have TV on the ceiling and he was watching movies so it made it more relaxing. I definitely recommend this dentist and will switch myself to this practice. read more

I was in Del Mar visiting our new grandson when I started to have a tooth ache. Hoped it would pass but after three days I gave Dr. Rutley a call on a Saturday morning. His office got me in within minutes; I got a full mouth X-ray and Dr. Rutley determined nothing was wrong with my teeth or gums (I have excellent regular dental care where we live.) Such a relief! And since no treatment was needed, no charge! His office is quite fun too with lots of Dan Diego State athletics memorabilia and SoCal motif like surfboards. Being a native San Diego born of San Diego parents I thought that really cool! Recommend an office visit for dentistry, then take a tour of the SDSU stuff too. Go Aztecs! read more

I arrived for my 3:00PM appointment 10 minutes early today. The dentist and hygienist never appeared, and after 40 minutes I left. My last visit with Dr. Rutley was pretty good in terms of service, so I was surprised to see a lack of consideration today - especially after his staff called me to verify my appointment in advance. read more

I really like this place. Great location, great atmosphere. Just switched recently when I lost my health insurance. Dr. Mark Rutley is friendly and knowledgable. As others have said, he is not gentle but I haven't broken anything yet! We did a cleaning and 2 fillings. Pricing was very reasonable. You get to watch a movie on the ceiling during dental work. The support staff are super friendly and welcoming. They get to know the regulars and can answer any questions you may have. I'd recommend avoiding monday mornings or monday altogether, as he does any emergency work from the weekend. I'll definitely be back in 6 months. read more

He was recommended by a friend, not for his skill as a dentist but because he had known him in school. Not having a regular dentist and being a recent arrival from Europe, I put my teeth in this vulture's hands. Needless to say, I was as ignorant as most people are about dentistry. I had a couple broken crowns and some minor pathology that needed addressing. I allowed myself to be talked into a "full mouth restoration" which means I allowed this maniac to do root canals on just about every tooth in my mouth, whether they needed them or not. Total cost was over 25K. As they will all eventually do, root canals started failing almost immediately which means in the intervening years I've spent another 25K on implants to replace all the needlessly done root canals. This guy should be incarcerated. read more

Off Hours Dentistry - General Dentistry Near Me - Del Mar, California

Least professional dentist I have ever been to. I have now been to this office on three separate occasions and in each case made wait more than 45 minutes before being seen. The entire operation is one big charade, with the receptionists & hygienists stalling, distracting and otherwise filibustering while Dr Rutley bounces from patient to patient putting out fires as he attempts to juggle three or more patients simultaneously. The serial triple booking is untenable and oddly reminiscent of an overbooked airline - alas no free cocktails or $500 flight vouchers for your inconvenience at Dentistry of Del Mar - just a dumbfounded look on the face of the receptionists that anyone would dare complain about Dr Rutley's lack of punctuality. I'm sorry doctor - I should have realized your time was more important than mine!! On my most recent (and last) visit, I made a point of asking the receptionist if they were generally running on schedule when I arrived. After being told that they were in-fact on schedule, you can imagine my surprise when more than 25 minutes later, none other than Dr. Rutley himself came marching through the front door to the office lunch in hand while I was still sitting in the waiting room. Making matters worse, the office is in complete and utter disarray. Papers strewn everywhere; cabinets falling off their hinges; drawers haphazardly stuffed with gauze pads, syringes, dental masks and various other items. While it's probably unfair to judge the overall hygiene of the office based on its general lack of tidiness, it really makes one wonder what other corners are being cut at this ramshackle operation. Needless to say, I will not be going back! read more

I went to see Dr Rutley for a number of years and he has completely destroyed my teeth. He completed a number of crowns and root canals in which he has dug so deep into my mouth that according to other dentists my mouth will never heal. On top of that, all the crowns broke and my jaw is forever damaged. This is because he see's up to 3 patients at the same time and you have to lie there a wait with your mouth open. Its just a factory, with a dentist with very limited skills. On a positive note, his staff are very nice, but end up fighting with the dentist. He treats them very badly, which about sums him up. DO NOT GO TO HIM read more

Made an emergency appointment for 11am on a Sunday. Dentist hadn't shown up for over an hour. I called, cancelled my appointment and left.

I called Dr. Rutley 10pm on a Saturday due to a painful infection and swelling where a wisdom tooth would be. He was able to prescribe an antibiotic and ibuprofen immediately. Sunday morning, he even called to check in on my pain level and if the meds were attainable. He scheduled me for 7am Monday morning. The office was clean, the receptionist was friendly. The assistant took xrays and Dr. Rutley had a look as well. I was referred to a dental imaging place for pano xrays and specific images of my two wisdom teeth areas, and asked to come back for a consult once the new images were in. The receptionist was able to call and get me an imaging appointment same day, immediately. I came back Tuesday with images in hand for my consult . I figured I'd schedule a cleaning to make my drive from oceanside worth is as well (it's been YEARS since my last dental visit elsewhere). A new receptionist greeted me and I was taken back where the hygienist Barbara did my cleaning. She was pleasant and very thorough. I appreciated her concern for my areas of pain and how she explained each action and didn't try to upsell me on a deep clean. Afterward, Dr. Rutley had a look at my tooth again, and the images. I was so happy when he said no wisdom teeth needed to be pulled! He suggested I keep on the antibiotics and that once this one-off infection cleared, I'd probably never have an issue with those wisdom teeth as they are deep and unlikely to surface. I appreciated his honesty when he said not to go to an oral surgeon as they may suggest removal anyhow. So excited to not need extractions! Even happier to have found this dentistry. read more

Dr. Rutley and his assistant were life savers last night. I had a dental emergency and he was the only provider to respond. He called me back while he was having acupuncture and agreed to see me immediately. He is knowledgeable with modern equipment and seemed very empathetic and understanding. He quickly assessed my teeth and while completing an emergency root canal late Friday night, he also took the time to do a comprehensive plan. Words cannot express how thankful my husband and I are. I am looking forward to having Dr. Rutley as my primary dentis!!And read more

I don't normally write reviews, but in this case I feel my opinion is important. Dr. Rutley treats his patients like they are not savvy enough to make a decision and his employees like inexperienced and lacking skills. Aside from being very expensive and doing work that is not needed probably how he treats people is the most important reason not to return to him. Very sad to see such conditions exist and it is not okay to treat people this way! I agree with all reviews with a star rating of 1. It is all true and I wish I had read these reviews before I went to see him. He is expensive and suggests work that is not needed. Also the crowns he made for me are very big and may need to be redone. read more

Dr. Rutley is absolutely great and has an amazing staff! I was in from out of town and broke some teeth on a late Sunday evening, and he called me back that same evening around 10pm willing to get me in the next day. I showed up and his team did an amazing job not only fixing my broken teeth but making them look better than before! Dr. Rutley is also very friendly and a nice guy; he loves what he does and his passion comes through in the results from his work. I can't recall the front desk lady's name but she was extremely nice and made sure I was taken care of throughout the day. What ever I needed she was there to help and she even brought me a nice pillow to use while I was waiting. Everyone at the practice went above and beyond and I could tell they truly care about their patients. I'm amazed how quickly they got me in and the quality of work was outstanding. read more

One Saturday afternoon I was in so much pain I googled: San Diego Emergency Dentist and Dr. Mark Rutley was the first search that came up. I was in so much pain, I was desperate to get this root cancal taken care of. I was suppose to make an appointment with my previous dentist the following Monday, but I was in way too much pain and Dr. Mark Rutley took me out of my misery that Saturday night September 15th at 6:30pm. For $1200.00: he took me out of pain and I got to watch The Tourist as he drilled away, HA! I told him that I usually had issues getting numbed up and boy did he make sure I had enough anesthesia so I would not feel any pain! I found out I needed two fillings and I think overall he is a little overpriced, but got them taken care with him anyways since my previous dentist covered the price for the root canal. read more

Dr. Mark Rutledge is an amazing dentist and such a kind man. Was amazing to my Mom as well. Go here and you can't go wrong!

No complaints. Was a patient for years and although I never liked my previous work done by other dentists he never pressured me in to having if fixed, rather, "If you want something done I can price it, your call." When I had the money to do it, first rate job completed and I constantly get told the same by everyone I meet. I wish I had done it earlier. As opposed to 10 minute cleanings I've had in the past his hygienists seem to do a much more thorough job. Unlike has been said in other replies I've never waited more than 10 minutes in over 20 visits. I don't mind a blunt talking dentist....beats the "everything is just wonderful but you need this this and this" used car salesman to me. If his employees feel so "berated" then why has some of his staff been there for apparently many years? read more

I was initially a patient of Dr Rutley's when I lived in San Diego. After living out of state for 3 years, I moved back to So CA but not to SD, I moved to Orange County. I live about 60 miles away from Dr Rutley and probably pass several hundred dentists on my way to an appointment with him. The best way I can sum up how good he is, how courteous and professional his staff is and how completely satisfied I am with the Dentistry at Del Mar practice is to say that it is well worth the drive! read more

I love Dr. Rutley and his staff! We have been patients of Dr. Rutley for about eight years, and since we live in Lemon Grove it's quite a long drive for us to get there. We are happy to do it because of the fantastic service we receive from both Dr. Rutley and his entire staff. In the past month both my son and my granddaughter have broken a front tooth. My son's tooth was repaired quickly and beautifully. My granddaughter came in for a second opinion, when her previous dentist recommended a root canal, and was going to use an old-fashioned silver cap! Not only did Dr. Rutley verify that she did not need a root canal, but his staff repaired it to perfection. Did I mention that I love Dr. Rutley and his staff? read more

UPdated 8/29/2016 you folks did it again...exceeded my expectations....in and out in less than 90 mins with an emergency broken tooth...no, sorry a shattered crown....more work than a took....no pain when I left...Dr. Rock your ROCK my good friend....thanks so much. been coming here for over 10 years now.... ................................................ It is important to let you know how much I appreciate the fine work you performed last week on my teeth. You did extensive work in one day to repair the broken tooth and root canal. I am now pain free for the first time in five or six years. As you know I have been coming here for over 5 years and the service and support gets better every time I come here. I do my best to take care of my teeth but natural cracks happen and you did a fine job on the cosmetically correct repair. Please pass on my appreciation to the entire staff especially Lyndsey and Bridget, we all know it takes team effort to run an office the size of yours so many thanks to all. I know you are very busy and have many issues facing you in managing your practice in a competitive marketplace, but please take the time to let everyone know I appreciate the fine work and attention to detail. Again, I appreciate your time and attention. read more

I was in an accident on a Saturday night and broke my two front teeth. I called Dr. Rutley on Sunday morning and he saw me that same afternoon. Mean and Greedy!! Save yourself thousands and trauma by going basically anywhere else. The dentist I was treated by elsewhere was shocked at what Dr Rutley was going to charge me (literally thousands more w/ insurance.) I could hear him yelling at his assistant in the room next to me about how he didn't get enough sleep and he needed her to pick it up. During my consultation he kept hollering at the receptionist from across the office to answer the phone. As if things were not already uncomfortable enough between his interactions with staff and his old, musty and claustrophobic office. When I asked about all of my treatment options he tried to strong-arm me by yelling at me about how it was my fault that I let my tooth rot in my mouth etc etc. As if I wasn't aware and already embarrassed about it. He continued to yell at me and shame me, while I was physically backed into a corner. I has to softly ask "may I pass" in order to get out of the space. Then he continued to follow me yelling. I left the office in tears and got my root canal done by Dr Lee Long in San Marcos the same day for 350 dollars. Dr Lee Long, his staff, and his office were everything Del Mar Dental wasn't. read more

I was visiting Ca from NY. On Thursday night I began to feel some discomfort in one of my teeth. By Saturday morning the pain was horrendous and my face was swollen. Being from out of town I didn't know where to go other than an emergency room. Found Dr. Rutley on the internet, called and he saw me within an hour(on a Saturday). He took X-rays, diagnosed an abscess and perscribed antibiotics. By my follow up visit on Tuesday I felt 100% better. He recommended a root canal in the offending tooth but didn't press me to have it done immediately. Dr Rutley went out of his way to help me out knowing that he probably would never see me again. How many doctors would do that for you? I would give him six stars if I could! read more

If you're looking for a gentile, meek, assembly line type of dentist then Dr.Rutely is not your guy. On the other hand if you want someone who takes pride in his work and loves his job then this is the dentist for you. I have never met a dentist so passionate about his work! He is high energy and gets excited talking about the newest and latest dental techniques. The staff is friendly and courteous and never pressures you into anything. You are never made to feel like just another number. You could pay less for cosmetic dentistry and walk out looking like you have a mouth full of chicklets or Get what you pay for and walk out of Dentistry of Delmar with beautiful teeth that make you happy and proud to show off your smile. I have never waited any longer in his office then I have at any other medical appointments. I respect the time he spends with other patients because I know he is going to take the time to show me the same kind of caring and well explained service. In defense of Dr. Rutely over booking the truth is he never turns anyone in pain away. In the years that I have known him if I or my husband or children have had an emergency he took us in right away. We might of waited for a while when we were there but I was never told"" sorry I can't fit you in until a couple of days or even next week ". You just can't find that kind of service anywhere else these days. I have been going to Dr. Rutely for 22 years. He was great then and even better now Over the years I've seen many cosmetic changes in his office. Dr. Rutely has always been concerned about making his patients feel comfortable. Each room is clean and comes equipped with flat screen TV's, comfortable chairs, stereo head phones beach decor and air conditioning. They are once again expanding so there is some remodeling going on but this has absolutely nothing to do with the professional and medical side of the dentistry. Since my first visit in 1990 to now I have had several procedures such as veneers, root canals, fillings, chipped tooth repair, and teeth whitening. I have never had any complaints about any of the services. My children enjoy their dentist appointment instead of dreading it .As do I. You can't make everyone happy, but for me 22 years of great service speaks volumes. I highly recommend dentistry of Delmar. read more

Had a terrible experience with Dr. Rutley. First off, let me preface this with that I am a female college student. I was in a lot of pain and needed to see a dentist ASAP so I called Dr. Rutley and he told me to come in that night. When I got there, I was all alone with Dr. Rutley--no staff, which I felt was a little wierd ( almost creepy). He looked at my teeth and after what seemed like ages, he told me I needed a route canal and said I needed some other work on teeth that didnt even hurt ( not something a college student wants to here $$$). He told me how much it was going to be and I informed Dr. Rutley that I couldn't pay that..to which he responded with ." can you go to an atm? or get the money from your parents? " It felt like he was more worried about how I was going to pay him than how much pain I was in. Definitly did not make me feel comfortable at all. All in all, it was a terrible experience and I would not recommend Dr. Rutley. read more

I left this dentist because he tried to do every procedure my insurance company would pay for. He said I needed 7 ( seven!) fillings on my first visit. 6 months earlier in another state I had a clean bill of health. Then he said I needed a root canal.
