The service and was great and everyone is super nice. The only problem is the billing. I've been to many different dentist but I've never encountered getting billed a year later for my service. I've had regular cleanings since my deep cleaning and never once was informed they were having issues with my insurance. They informed me a year later from when I got the service that insurance wasn't going to cover it. The insurance company said I didn't need a need a deep leaning even though I was informed I needed it and it was too late for me to submit a claim. I was no longer with the same employer which made it more difficult. Other dentists I've been to usually submit a claim prior to my service so I know what I need to pay out of pocket instead they do it after. read more

Kristyn scheduled an emergency dental appointment for me. She was just wonderful on the phone. When I walked in the door for my first appointment, Terri and Nate were very friendly and helpful. They made me feel completely welcome and at ease. I met with Dr. McDonald and his assistant, Isabella, and I cannot rate them highly enough. Dr. McDonald diagnosed my dental problem. He immediately scheduled an appointment with an endodontist. After meeting with Dr. Brand, Terri contacted an oral surgeon for a tooth extraction. Such a wonderful experience with Dr. McDonald and his team, I am so very thankful for this office! The staff is so friendly and warm, you feel welcomed and peaceful upon entering the office. I have recently been going in and getting some much needed dental treatment and Dr. McDonald is such an expert at what he does. I am 3 visits in, including a dental emergency situation, the efficiency and high quality of care has been great. My dental emergency situation left me very impressed with the quality of care here. I had my front tooth crack down the middle, with one half hanging on and the other half still in place. I called the office as soon as it happened and even though it was an early day for them, they squeezed me in, a new patient! I came in and I was so concerned for my tooth, my smile, thinking the worst. As soon as I got there each staff member I encountered was so warm and made me feel at ease. Awesome Dentist. Very professional, knowledgeable and very approachable and friendly. As a dentist for regular maintenance he is really good, but I needed a set of veneers/porcelain overlays on my top set of choppers. What a wonderful office! My son was having tooth pain and couldn't get into his pediatric dentist. We called Dr. McDonald, who came highly recommended - and his wonderful office person Dani said they had an opening. My son had never been to a "grown up" dentist before, but everything was just fine! There seems to be a lot of billing issues with over billing and poor communication. I'm not sure if its the person that is doing the billing or what but it is the worst feeling to go to the dentist and then hold your breath for the next 4 months waiting to get an incorrect bill in the mail. It's rare that I give five star reviews. But, this little place TOTALLY deserves it. If I didn't loathe visiting the dentist, I'd actually like this place. As soon as you enter the joint, you're greeted by two stunning blondes with amazing smiles and matching attitudes. (BONUS: They even know how to deal with husbands who haven't had their coffee yet!) The place is very clean and the staff is very kind. If you find yourself waiting they have a little coffee/tea/snack section. It's a nice touch. My hygienist (I can't remember her name but she was half Japanese and half Lithuanian) was really personable. She did a fabulous job on my cleaning. In fact, my teeth felt the squeakiest they've ever felt. Now for the dental 'work'. Egads! Have you ever seen the movie 'The Dentist' starring Corben Bernstein?! I've had some pretty horrific experiences sitting in that dental chair... all jacked up...drooling, sweating, the look of terror... Let's just say that fear TOTALLY rules when I hear the motor on that drill.... But, I've got some amazing news! After dealing with Dr. McDonald, my trepidation has been pistol-whipped. The doc. painlessly shot me up with Novocain and got my work done in no time at all! (Finally! This forty year old can feel her age when she hops into the dentist's chair!) Oh, and the most important part of it all is that Dr. McDonald was very meticulous with his work. My teeth not only feel fabulous, they look amazing. Great dentist, great experience. I went in expecting the worst and oh did I get it. 6 cavities later, I was worried about the future appointment. Dr McDonald's work was excellent, and we even got them all done in one go thanks to the doctor taking extra time through one laborious journey. I think I may have learned my lesson about flossing. I have to preface this review by saying that Dr. Matt McDonald is a nice guy that knows what he is doing. I had quite a bit of work done and he was more than competent at his job. That being said, I had a NIGHTMARE of a time with his office regarding charges for the services rendered. Upon my initial consultation, I was provided with a quote for the procedures (cavities and periodontics). After several visits, the bills came in the mail and ended up being OVER DOUBLE what was initially quoted. Granted this was on the part of the insurance company, but the office did not pick up on what was not being covered. After consulting a close friend in healthcare law, she indicated the charges that weren't covered are very common and that any legitimate dental office should know this and provide this information to its patients. Had I known my out of pocket costs would be over double what the office quoted me from the start, I would have gotten more quotes for the services and made different decisions on the procedures. I hate going to the dentist. I've had very few positive experiences. I must have horribly sensitive gums or something because even those stupid ex-ray things they stick in your mouth make water come out of my eyes. Dr. McDonald put a crown in for me and less than 2 1/2 years later it broke. My insurance will not cover a replacement because a crown should last 5-15 years. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

I echo the other one star reviews. Dr. McDonald and his wife were both very friendly and seemed competent. No real complaints about the dental service itself; an observation was that it did indeed take longer than other dentists I have been to (but that is not necessarily negative). My main complaint was with the way my billing was handled. Without getting in to tedious details, there was an additional charge not covered by my insurance due to the procedure taking place too close to a previous procedure. While this is more on the insurance end, I do not understand why this information was not available to the dental office; furthermore when I spoke with my insurance company, I was informed that this is a fairly common practice/coverage issue, and that most legitimate dental offices are aware of this. Let me also say that I would have been content with just parting ways with Dr. McDonald's office, however a series of email exchanges with his front office left a particularly bad taste in my mouth, and prompted me to leave a review. A dental practice is still selling a service (even if it is a medical service), and as a paying customer, I expect a certain level of conduct. So if you choose to visit this dental practice, just make sure that you do not take their word on any insurance coverage and/or estimates, and that you fully understand your own dental coverage plan. read more

I had heard good things about him and was in store for a new dentist so I figured now would be the time to go to him. I called his office and explained my situation and my situation. Dr. McDonald squeezed me into his schedule that same day and got me fitted for a new retainer. He was very pleasant and professional. The staff was all very friendly and was more than happy to take me in the same day. I really don't like going to the dentist, but Dr. McDonald's office in Del Mar put me at ease and took the time to make me feel comfortable. The office environment is low key and professional, not like one of those churn-em and burn-em dentist offices that want you in and out. There is a TV on the ceiling and he put SportCenter on so I had something to do while he did a few fillings. He was gentle, steady, and fast, and took the time to answer my questions and explain my treatment plan. He gave me three different options for my treatment and explained each one thoroughly. I hate when doctors and dentists seem like they want to just bill you for the most expensive service, but I really feel like Dr. McDonald wants the best thing for your dental health. The dentist was very nice but I can't believe it took 2 hrs to do a cleaning.. Our previous dentist could do X-rays an exam and cleaning done in an HR and our teeth were always amazingly clean.. I'm in the dental field and think this is a little ridiculous also my son needed to have 4 fillings and they told me after insurance it would be $243 so I found another dentist down the street who was amazing and did them all for $68 plus we found out that one of my sons teeth is cracked and should not have had a filling put in but that was what was in their treatment plan and we were going by that so when it cracks we will have a crown done.. Crazy how the same insurance I was being charged so much at their office.. It's all about the money. They charge what they want and then the insurance picks up what they are supposed to.. I am 25 years old and still have a dentist phobia (me and everyone else I know). I hadn't been to the dentist in a few years (don't judge me) and I saw Dr. McDonald. He was so kind, talked me through how my teeth looked, why they needed work, which teeth to give extra care to, etc. This was just my cleaning. Then when I came back in to have my work done he assured me that we were going to get through it. He told me we could take it filling by filling. The numbing process was the easiest I've ever had (they apply numbing gel beforehand). Throughout the entire process he talked me through how long each one would take (he was very efficient). Basically what I'm trying to get at is even when I was having my teeth drilled, Dr. McDonald somehow was able to make time fly and ease my nerves. I would recommend him to anyone!
