The service and was great and everyone is super nice. The only problem is the billing. I've been to many different dentist but I've never encountered getting billed a year later for my service. I've had regular cleanings since my deep cleaning and never once was informed they were having issues with my insurance. They informed me a year later from when I got the service that insurance wasn't going to cover it. The insurance company said I didn't need a need a deep leaning even though I was informed I needed it and it was too late for me to submit a claim. I was no longer with the same employer which made it more difficult. Other dentists I've been to usually submit a claim prior to my service so I know what I need to pay out of pocket instead they do it after. read more

I'm a senior and have been with Dr. McDonald's for more than 5 years. I should say Dr. McDonald is a very experienced and devoted dentist, I had been to more than five dentists before I found Dr. McDonald ,so I consider he is the best dentist among the six dentists I've tried. Yu Bruce read more

Kristyn scheduled an emergency dental appointment for me. She was just wonderful on the phone. When I walked in the door for my first appointment, Terri and Nate were very friendly and helpful. They made me feel completely welcome and at ease. I met with Dr. McDonald and his assistant, Isabella, and I cannot rate them highly enough. Dr. McDonald diagnosed my dental problem. He immediately scheduled an appointment with an endodontist. After meeting with Dr. Brand, Terri contacted an oral surgeon for a tooth extraction. Everyone I encountered in this office is absolutely "first class". They are very approachable, down to earth, and kind. read more

Just had my teeth cleaned by Maggie...she was meticulous, gentle and very informative. If you can get on her schedule...your teeth will thank you. On a side note...as usual - everyone in this office is very nice (nice goes a long way in my "book"). Mark T. read more

Such a wonderful experience with Dr. McDonald and his team, I am so very thankful for this office! The staff is so friendly and warm, you feel welcomed and peaceful upon entering the office. I have recently been going in and getting some much needed dental treatment and Dr. McDonald is such an expert at what he does. I am 3 visits in, including a dental emergency situation, the efficiency and high quality of care has been great. My dental emergency situation left me very impressed with the quality of care here. I had my front tooth crack down the middle, with one half hanging on and the other half still in place. I called the office as soon as it happened and even though it was an early day for them, they squeezed me in, a new patient! I came in and I was so concerned for my tooth, my smile, thinking the worst. As soon as I got there each staff member I encountered was so warm and made me feel at ease. When I met Dr. McDonald he approached my situation with such calm, reassurance and confidence. Sure enough he quickly and painlessly repaired it, I walked out of there with a great smile, no sign of a broken tooth! Highly satisfied, highly recommend. I look forward to completing the work I need done and continuing on here. read more

Awesome Dentist. Very professional, knowledgeable and very approachable and friendly. As a dentist for regular maintenance he is really good, but I needed a set of veneers/porcelain overlays on my top set of choppers. Was NOT looking forward to it, but Dr. MCDonald made it painless both physically as well as time wise. And what a great job he did! I'm so pleased I had his practice do the work. By the way his practice has a great team. I actually don not mind going to the dentist with this crew. Worth a visit, he has both a Del Mar and Oceanside offices. read more

What a wonderful office! My son was having tooth pain and couldn't get into his pediatric dentist. We called Dr. McDonald, who came highly recommended - and his wonderful office person Dani said they had an opening. My son had never been to a "grown up" dentist before, but everything was just fine! Dr. McDonald has a wonderful manner with kids, and he did fantastic work very quickly and without a lot of discomfort (no shot - no numbing!). My kid was very happy and will now have to decide whether to go back to his pediatric dentist or keep going here. Thank you so much, Dani and Dr. McDonald! read more

I had a very pleasant experience as a new patient today. All of the staff were friendly and professional, and my hygienist Kimberly was excellent. The office is clean with plenty of natural light, views of trees outside and lovely nature photography prints inside... and my teeth are super clean! read more

Dr. Matt McDonal and his entire staff are such professionals. They do a brilliant job, but with the fear of going to the dentist make it so comfortable and fun along the way. Nobody likes a root canal, but today I actually did not experience any pain and Dr. Matt was so kind talking me through it the entire way. His wife is so lovely too! Oh, and Dani at the front desk is fantastic. She always gets back to me and works with my crazy schedule. Such a comfort and relief I've found a forever, great dentist! read more

Matt McDonald, DDS - Cosmetic Dentists Near Me - Del Mar, California

I came here last minute after a friend recommended for cosmetic work. They were able to see me right away (same day) and wow! De McDonald was amazing! I had been uncomfortable with my front tooth for awhile and boom, he fixed it and I literally could not be happier and was in and out in an hour! The staff was very professional and beyond kind all around!! read more

Dr. McDonnald is great! Knowledgeable, friendly and does great dental work. The only issue I have had multiple times is with the billing. There seems to be a lot of billing issues with over billing and poor communication. I'm not sure if its the person that is doing the billing or what but it is the worst feeling to go to the dentist and then hold your breath for the next 4 months waiting to get an incorrect bill in the mail. Not even a phone call but a bill saying PAST DUE when you never knew you even had a balance due! If they could get the billing under control, I would give 5 stars. read more

It's rare that I give five star reviews. But, this little place TOTALLY deserves it. If I didn't loathe visiting the dentist, I'd actually like this place. As soon as you enter the joint, you're greeted by two stunning blondes with amazing smiles and matching attitudes. (BONUS: They even know how to deal with husbands who haven't had their coffee yet!) The place is very clean and the staff is very kind. If you find yourself waiting they have a little coffee/tea/snack section. It's a nice touch. My hygienist (I can't remember her name but she was half Japanese and half Lithuanian) was really personable. She did a fabulous job on my cleaning. In fact, my teeth felt the squeakiest they've ever felt. Now for the dental 'work'. Egads! Have you ever seen the movie 'The Dentist' starring Corben Bernstein?! I've had some pretty horrific experiences sitting in that dental chair... all jacked up...drooling, sweating, the look of terror... Let's just say that fear TOTALLY rules when I hear the motor on that drill.... But, I've got some amazing news! After dealing with Dr. McDonald, my trepidation has been pistol-whipped. The doc. painlessly shot me up with Novocain and got my work done in no time at all! (Finally! This forty year old can feel her age when she hops into the dentist's chair!) Oh, and the most important part of it all is that Dr. McDonald was very meticulous with his work. My teeth not only feel fabulous, they look amazing. The PTSD I've experienced from all my old dentists has been cured. Now that I've found Dr. Matt, he'd better stay right where he is at! read more

I don't have a phobia of dentists, but I also don't look forward to going (who does?). Then came apprehension for the first time in my life to go to the dentist when my life-long family dentist...RETIRED! My friend recommended Dr. McDonald, and now I am forever indebted to my friend because Dr. McDonald and his staff are absolutely wonderful, and worth the 70 mile drive. From start to finish, this office did everything right. Everyone from the receptionist to the hygienist was super friendly and helpful. The cleaning was thorough but not painful. Dr. McDonald has a great way about him, explains everything really well, and you never feel rushed. He is an easy-going, friendly and relatable person. He keeps you informed with everything he's doing and answers any questions you might have. Choosing a dentist is a very intimate experience. It involves a lot of trust, especially during your first visit. With Dr. McDonald, I left giving him my complete trust and once again have a dentist in my life whom I am not anxious to visit. read more

Great dentist, great experience. I went in expecting the worst and oh did I get it. 6 cavities later, I was worried about the future appointment. Dr McDonald's work was excellent, and we even got them all done in one go thanks to the doctor taking extra time through one laborious journey. I think I may have learned my lesson about flossing. Even going back for a checkup is welcoming and the care that the doctor provides is well above the expected amount. Would recommend. read more

Dr. Matt is the best dentist I've ever been too. I'm 33 years old and unfortunately in my lifetime, I've needed a lot of dentistry. I've had bad work, average work, and now excellent work. Without exception, the best dental office I've ever had. Dr McDonald is skilled, friendly, quick and actually cares about his patients. The hygienists are the sweetest people in the business. The service always makes me feel like I'm the priority, not just a number and they make you feel like family. I can't give them 10 stars or I would. read more

I had a great experience with Matt McDonald. First, I love that you can schedule appointments via email. Life can be hectic, so this is helpful! Also, I love how they give you all pricing information right up front. Today I had to get a crown, and it was quick and painless! I had another appointment scheduled for a filling, but since I had to wait on the crown to get made, he did my filling too! Saves me a trip! If you are nervous or new to the area, and looking for a new dentist, I would check this place out! read more

I have to preface this review by saying that Dr. Matt McDonald is a nice guy that knows what he is doing. I had quite a bit of work done and he was more than competent at his job. That being said, I had a NIGHTMARE of a time with his office regarding charges for the services rendered. Upon my initial consultation, I was provided with a quote for the procedures (cavities and periodontics). After several visits, the bills came in the mail and ended up being OVER DOUBLE what was initially quoted. Granted this was on the part of the insurance company, but the office did not pick up on what was not being covered. After consulting a close friend in healthcare law, she indicated the charges that weren't covered are very common and that any legitimate dental office should know this and provide this information to its patients. Had I known my out of pocket costs would be over double what the office quoted me from the start, I would have gotten more quotes for the services and made different decisions on the procedures. Questionable sales practices without a doubt. So BEWARE of the quotes you receive here if you are a first time patient. read more

Dr. McDonald is absolutely the best dentist in Del Mar! Here are some of the awesome things about this dental office: Super professional staff Hygienist on point/ Maggie gave me one of the most thorough cleanings I have ever had Dr. Matt has one of the best bed side manners of any dentist I've ever been to Beautiful office Totally attentive to my needs which are very particular The list goes on... tell your friends about this doc! read more

Hadn't been to see a dentist in about 3 years, so I was pretty nervous going in. Dr. Matt and his staff were super friendly and made the visit relaxed and beyond my expectations! Would definitely recommend Dr. Matt and his staff to everyone. read more

I hate going to the dentist. I've had very few positive experiences. I must have horribly sensitive gums or something because even those stupid ex-ray things they stick in your mouth make water come out of my eyes. I wouldn't ever recommend anyone go to the dentist, until I met Dr. McDonald. Dr. McDonald has been nothing but a pleasure to work with. He sincerely cares about the comfort of his patient - and I am the hardest to care for. I experienced little to no pain while under his care, and he is really good at explaining what he is doing and/or going to do. If you just moved to San Diego, need a new dentist, or have insurance for the first time in your adult life (like me), then you must try Matt McDonald. I had 4 issues identified on my screening visit. Options for resolution provided clearly, including just monitoring the problem areas. All 4 were resolved within 2.5 hours on the second visit. Pricing very fair for the degree of expertise provided in San Diego. I am an M.D. with particular sensitivities to the patient experience. As far as dental work goes, this was great. Highly recommended. read more

One day crown (previous one took 5 visits at another dentist) using the latest technology? No problems since! Upper and lower restorations of some leaking composite fillings with no high spots or issues. I go to this dentist and leave with confidence and a smile. This office is a joy to come and see. They are never running behind schedule, they properly bill my insurance so that I really only have to pay the copay, and they are very reasonably priced. If you are really so sorry, why don't you reimburse me for the cost of the new crown. That would be the appropriate professional response.

Dr. McDonald put a crown in for me and less than 2 1/2 years later it broke. My insurance will not cover a replacement because a crown should last 5-15 years. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

I echo the other one star reviews. Dr. McDonald and his wife were both very friendly and seemed competent. No real complaints about the dental service itself; an observation was that it did indeed take longer than other dentists I have been to (but that is not necessarily negative). My main complaint was with the way my billing was handled. Without getting in to tedious details, there was an additional charge not covered by my insurance due to the procedure taking place too close to a previous procedure. While this is more on the insurance end, I do not understand why this information was not available to the dental office; furthermore when I spoke with my insurance company, I was informed that this is a fairly common practice/coverage issue, and that most legitimate dental offices are aware of this. Let me also say that I would have been content with just parting ways with Dr. McDonald's office, however a series of email exchanges with his front office left a particularly bad taste in my mouth, and prompted me to leave a review. A dental practice is still selling a service (even if it is a medical service), and as a paying customer, I expect a certain level of conduct. So if you choose to visit this dental practice, just make sure that you do not take their word on any insurance coverage and/or estimates, and that you fully understand your own dental coverage plan. read more

I LOVE MY SMILE thanks to Dr McDonald! I have had so many nice compliments on my white teeth. What a great job replacing crowns and making them look good! The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, nd competent. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Dental assistant Isabella did such an amazing job on the temporary crowns! I really don't like going to the dentist, but Dr. McDonald's office in Del Mar put me at ease and took the time to make me feel comfortable. The office environment is low key and professional, not like one of those churn-em and burn-em dentist offices that want you in and out. There is a TV on the ceiling and he put SportCenter on so I had something to do while he did a few fillings. He was gentle, steady, and fast, and took the time to answer my questions and explain my treatment plan. He gave me three different options for my treatment and explained each one thoroughly. I hate when doctors and dentists seem like they want to just bill you for the most expensive service, but I really feel like Dr. McDonald wants the best thing for your dental health. I would highly recommend Dr. McDonald and his staff. read more

The dentist was very nice but I can't believe it took 2 hrs to do a cleaning.. Our previous dentist could do X-rays an exam and cleaning done in an HR and our teeth were always amazingly clean.. I'm in the dental field and think this is a little ridiculous also my son needed to have 4 fillings and they told me after insurance it would be $243 so I found another dentist down the street who was amazing and did them all for $68 plus we found out that one of my sons teeth is cracked and should not have had a filling put in but that was what was in their treatment plan and we were going by that so when it cracks we will have a crown done.. Crazy how the same insurance I was being charged so much at their office.. It's all about the money. They charge what they want and then the insurance picks up what they are supposed to.. It's greedy if you tell me.. read more
