I was looking for a machine shop to check the head on a Lexus ct200h (Fancy Prius) I was doing a head gasket job on. Called around and Tony was the first to answer the phone, after a couple questions I came down & had him take a look. Turns out some of the valves were leaking & one was event bent. I had a stripped bolt in a newly purchased bike rack. I tried an easy-out and when that failed, cutting a slot for a flat head screwdriver with no success for either. I thought it would have to be drilled out. Not having a drill press for the precise drilling required, I stopped by and Tony, the owner, used an impact driver and removed the offending bolt in a few minutes. I was in a bind rebuilding the engine on my car and the owner, Tony came through in spades. I couldn't get the valves installed properly into my cylinder head. Tony was really helpful and kept the shop open late for me since I desperately needed to get on the road. He is a total pro, and got the heads put back together. Then he made sure the head wasn't warped and valves were all pressure tested, and found some leaks and fixed them without me asking him to. The job was done right. Super helpful and no judgement that I couldn't get the job done. He has tons of equipment that can pretty much do any machine job you need done for your vehicle. A couple of weeks ago, I needed to get to the bottom of why my '79 F250 , with a 460 in it, woulsn't pass SMOG. I took the engine apart and narrowed it down to needing some work done on my heads. I had a relationship with another machine shop, but couldn't put my finger on what didn't feel right about doing business with them. They have great reviews and the work they did has held up, but again.....just didn't feel right, so I looked for another shop. I called J&M and they were very helpful and informative on the phone. More than any other shop I had called. I just inherently knew that this was a group of good guys. When I arrived the next day, it seemed like they were expecting me and knew exactly who I was. WOW! I didn't even tell them I was coming down. Anyway, they came out to my truck, looked at my heads in the back, and basically did a complete inspection and explanation of what was and wasn't going on with them. Tons of free advice and feedback. They were ready to do whatever I wanted done, but based on their pricing, it only made sense to completely rework the heads and make sure they were in top condition to go back on my block. A few days later, they called and I picked up the heads. Reviewed with me what they did and didn't to do (ie...no additional charges) and the overall condition of my heads. More than likely, I am going to completely rebuild the engine in the near future. I have no doubt that if I were to ever have any problem with any of their work (which I doubt I will) they will be there to make it right. Sometimes you run into folks that just "get it" and know how to not only do great work, but also how to work with people. That in my book makes them the "Go to guys" in the Bay Area for automotive machine work. read more

Great shop! Did a timing belt& waterpump job on my car, bolt broke in the engine block. It was a nightmare! Took it to the shop and mitch did his best and took care of it. I needed some pistons to make some trophies for a car show. I asked probably 8 other machine shops if they would help me and they all said no. I called this shop and asked for some pistons. Instead if just saying no he asked what they were for. We spoke a little and I asked him if he had any old ones be would be willing to sell to me. Without hesitation he said. "ehhh you can just have em. I'm just going to throw them away anyway". I was super happy and drove down there to pick them up. He gave me a few options and worked with me...on something that he wouldn't even make money on. Then after I made then he came to the show to make sure they worked out!! what a guy. Needed an axle pressed off a bearing hub. Kia San Leandro recommended. Called and spoke to Mitch. Explained my problem and asked how much to do the job. He said no charge if it was going to be a 5 min job. Walked in and Immediately knew that this is an old school one man shop "why aren't more of these shops around?" Mitch was friendly and refreshingly competent. Popped the axle off in no time. He didn't ask for payment, but there was no way I was going to leave with out giving him $$ He saved me a bunch of $$.
