Wonderful coffee, pastries and atmosphere. My friend and I are visiting Edinburgh for the first time and I wanted to find a nice place for a coffee. This cafe was a short walk from our Airbnb and I was not disappointed. We were greeted by Seymour, the cafe's resident dog and proceeded to order a espresso and pastries. The comfy antique-looking armchairs added a nice touch to the environment. This was a perfect way to start our day walking around Edinburgh!

Great cakes!

We were lucky enough to find a seat and were attended quite quickly. The menu is mostly in french with some descriptions in english. For lunch they have a selection of sandwiches on offer, fresh made quiches and specials. They also have a large selection of sweet treats. Fresh made macaroons, croissants, cakes, all the sweet delicious french delicacies you have come to expect. We had lunch. I had the croque monsieur my partner had the special of the day, which was an open faced sandwich with potatoes, onions, cheese and ham melted on a baguette. My sandwich was DELICIOUS. The cheese was sooo good and melted and creamy goodness. I seriously couldn't get enough of it, too bad we were sharing. I wanted the entire thing and then another! We also ordered a baguette sandwich, the Provecal. It had roasted vegetables, pesto and goats cheese. The bread was to die for, really fresh and tasty. A quality baguette indeed. I can promise this place offers the best croque monsieur in Edinburgh. The bread is top notch and sadly, I can't say anything of the sweets as we went to Cuckoos for dessert. Next time!!!

When I lived in Bruntsfield, I very much enjoyed walking in for a read of the newspaper and a coffee. However, my favourite thing about the place is the breakfast/brunch menu. Eggs benedict, bacon rolls, you name it. Great food, prepared fresh, and in lovely surroundings. Worth a stop.

Now being a coffee enthusiast (snob) I tend to have one stipulation about a coffee house. And that is that they can make a flat white. Oh can this place make a flat white. Perfectly extracted espresso, milk steamed perfectly (creamy, not frothy) so it had that delicious sweetness. They even pour it with the fancy rosetta, which left me little choice but to take a picture of it. There are, however, a few reasons this place doesn't get the full 5* treatment. It's fairly reasonably priced (my flat white was £2.10), but you can get better coffee cheaper. Also, they do only serve one type of coffee. But then , this was only their first day of business. A few teething issues aside, this place has massive potential. A very, very impressive start.

This tells you how great the place is before you've even visited, so we were adamant on coming back as soon as we were back in Edinburgh. Ringing a few days before, we booked a midday spot for brunch on a Friday. And you know what, it's a good job we did, as it was still super busy when we arrived. The menu consists of breakfast (served till mid afternoon so we'll call it brunch), and other lunch items with a range of specials available. As part of the specials, there are regularly changing smoothie flavours. I had a blueberry, oaty, gingery thingy, and it was delicious. For food my boyfriend had a full Scottish with extra haggis, and I had eggs benedict with a sausage on the side. The food was absolutely amazing, and a special shout out goes to that sausage! Yummy with a capital y! Really good standard of food, good service and a cosy atmosphere inside. It's the kind of place you could take the parents to, whilst also being suitable for a hungover breakfast with your mates. Just make sure you book in advance, but it'll be worth it I promise.

The cafe was an adorable old house turned into a cafe and we got a seat near the back looking over the garden in the back of the space. It was really nice. My wife got the seasonal eggs Benedict and I got the peas a la salt. The Bennedict was good, but seemed like it was missing something. My best guess is that it's just the English muffin wasn't as sturdy as I'm used to and I'm used to it that way. The peas a la salt came over sourdough bread with bacon, black pudding and a poached egg. Same as the Bennedict, it was all yummy, but not amazing. The peas were very far from mushy (which is good), but maybe could have been a bit firmer. Things just didn't quite come together the way I would have hoped.

HOT HOT HOT CHOCOLATE for ALL chocolate LOVERS! The…read morechocolate tree is located on a busy road and still it's easy to find car parking nearby, especially on a Sunday. Also conveniently accessible by bus. There is not much sitting space, such best to book in advance. We got a lovely table at the front window (which by the way is the only table in the front of the shop). I believe there is a very small sitting area in the back. You can find lots of chocolate variations on display on cupboard shelves. At the moment they offer 10% off chocolate bars before a certain time of the day. There are also macaroons, ice cream a (not gelato), pralines and little "cakes". Above the main entrance you see the drink menu written on huge chalk boards: Traditional chocolate, one for kids and one for adults, white chocolate, milky chocolate, dark chocolate and much more. They do coffee too. I ordered salted caramel ice cream and milk chocolate, which was the best hot milk chocolate in Edinburgh so far, and not to mention I got served plenty of it in a big mug. Definitely worth the money. Must confess, my eyes were bigger than my stomach and next time a hot chocolate will be plenty :-) They are also present with stalls at various Edinburgh markets, like Stockbridge. Its an ideal place to take away and enjoy the "pleasures" somewhere else.

If you like chocolate, you will LOVE The Chocolate Tree. Located in the trendy Bruntsfield area, it is in the perfect position to sit in and gorge or sit out and gorge. Their chocolates are all organic (so at least your conscious feels good about eating copious amounts of chocolate...) The decor is very chic, trendy and indulgent. Indeed, I think Indulgence is a theme in the cafe. My first visit was under sad circumstances - recently single and feeling vulnerable, my friend took me and ordered me the 'Spanish Hot Chocolate' (see picture). Oh My God. Where I was feeling despairing, distraught and dismayed I was overcome with delight, deliriousness and felt thoroughly delectable!! It was perfect...perhaps a bit rich, but the first few sips were to die for. It even came with a little dough cake-thing to dip into the thick, gloopy chocolate, like fondue! It would have been ideal for two to share. To be honest, I'm not what you would call a choc-a-holic - especially now that Cadbury's is no longer considered 'chocolate'. But there is something for everyone to enjoy, whether its a slice of their GLORIOUS chocolate cake (it was delicious, after a while I felt I should find a mirror to check if my pupils had dilated) or one of their mini chocolate bites. If you can't make it to the shop they sell online and they're much cheaper than their competition ( it's one of their ethical principles, woohoo!). It really is worth visiting, on a warm summer day to lounge and indulge yourself, or on a cold winter evening to keep yourself warm. It's the sort of place I imagine Harry Potter would sit in...
