    Shigoku Oyster Shooters
    Jacynda O.

I had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while, so I was excited to see them participating in Dine Downtown 2025. The four-course meal was more than worth the price! I went with the Shigoku Oyster Shooters, Sopa de Elote, Gulf Shrimp Tacos, and Brown Butter Cake. All of our food came out quickly, and everything was beautifully plated, well-portioned, and packed with flavor. I loved the oysters so much that I ended up ordering the BBQ Oysters, which came with a Chipotle Mignonette, Salsa Cerveza, and Fresh Cotija Cheese. I also ordered a couple of drinks - The Coconut Mojito and Lychee Pisco Sour. Perfectly balanced and almost too pretty to drink. I love seafood, so I definitely want to come back to try more of their menu.

They have an excellent happy hour menu! What I ordered: Tostada: $7 soooo good and would totally order again Oysters: $3.50 per oyster, it was okay, I would pass next time Shrimp taco: $9 excellent deal and on blue corn tortillas. I would order again.

Chips and salsa. Only thing I didn't like was their salsa which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. Chips are super tasty though!

Service was great, our server was attentive and friendly. Great patio outside and inside has great decor. I'm a big fan of comfortable chairs and this place has them. But the star, the shrimp tacos! Just go, you'll be happy especially at their happy hour. I've also found my new favorite margarita, passionfruit. Not too sweet, refreshing and not weak, perfect on a Friday evening after a long week. Also if you like tuna, get a blue fin tostada or 2 or 3. No one is judging.

Four-course menu for Dine Downtown 2026

Food: 6/10 Service: 9/10 Cleanliness: 10/10 Came here for Sacramento's Dine Downtown and had never heard of the place before. I liked the surf n' turf chic that the place had going on. It gave the place some personality without seeming too busy. We originally had a reservation for 6 but ended up adding someone last minute and the ladies at the front were quick to find a way to accommodate. There was a decent amount of space around us too, even with how spacious the chairs were. We all stuck with the four-course menu since $45 for an appetizer, soup, entree and dessert seemed like a good deal. However, the portions didn't quite meet my expectations. First, calling the oysters "shooters" seems a bit misleading. They were quick to consume yes, but that was mainly because they were so small. The mix of the salsa didn't quite pack a punch of flavor that I would expect. Also, what I'm assuming is the chive oil underneath tasted strongly like marijuana (I'm just commenting on the taste and am not making a claim that it was marijuana). The Sopa de Elote was a step up in flavor but echoed the same energy as it pertains to amount. With how small the first two dishes were, I expected the entree to compensate somehow, but the four shrimps laid out separately around a light smear of beans really doubled down on the theme. I had to scrape the plate just to get a spoonful. The corn had an overly chewy texture, but the skirt steak was decent with a nice amount of micro veggies on top. The dish that I would say redeemed the rest of the courses was the dessert. The cake wasn't too dense or sweet (in my opinion), and huge fan of the pistachio ice cream combo on top even though the ice cream was pretty melted. It reminded me of a sticky toffee pudding from Hell's Kitchen, which is my absolute favorite. Overall this place isn't bad, and the staff were good about checking on us and making sure we had what we needed, but I'm not sure if I want to come back to find out that on their normal menu that their portions stay the same with higher prices.

My husband and I visited Octopus Baja during Sacramento's Dine Downtown for a Friday night date, and overall it was a good experience with a mix of highlights and a few small letdowns. The Dine Downtown menu offered a four-course meal for $45 per person, which felt like a fair deal for the amount of food and variety. We had an 8:30 PM reservation but arrived around 8:15 PM and were seated right away, which we really appreciated. The restaurant was very busy, so making a reservation is definitely the way to go. We started with drinks and ordered the Coconut Pineapple Fresca and the Guava Lemon Smash. Both tasted fresh and fruity, but honestly, we couldn't taste the alcohol at all. They tasted more like juice than a cocktail, which was a little disappointing considering the price. For the first course, we each ordered the Shigoku oysters. They weren't bad, but I've definitely had better oysters elsewhere. The presentation felt a bit rushed. For the second course, I had the Sopa de Elote, which I actually enjoyed. It was light but still full of flavor. My husband ordered the clam chowder, which was good as well. One thing that surprised us was that these dishes came out before our drinks, which felt out of order. For the entrée, I ordered the Citrus Miso Glazed Salmon. The presentation was beautiful, and the salmon itself was cooked nicely and paired well with the sauce. Unfortunately, the potatoes were still a bit hard, so I skipped them, and the broccoli didn't seem fully charred. It looked like it may have been boiled first and then lightly grilled. My husband ordered the Gulf Shrimp Tacos, which were good but very simple, and he wished there was a bit more since he was still hungry afterward. The dessert completely stole the show. The brown butter cake was warm, rich, and exactly what you want to end a meal with. It's one dessert for two people, which we didn't realize at first, but it ended up being the perfect amount. We finished it very quickly. Service overall was good but not exceptional. Other servers helped refill our water, which was appreciated. Overall, Dine Downtown was a good way to try Octopus Baja on a budget. It was a nice spot for a date night and a fun way to try something new.

We visited Octopus Baja for the first time on Thursday evening to participate in Dine Downtown. Anticipating a busy night, I made a reservation in advance. I did have a few questions beforehand and tried calling the restaurant the day prior, leaving a voicemail, but unfortunately never received a call back. Our reservation was for 6:45 pm, and we checked in right on time. The restaurant was clearly very busy, with several groups waiting to be seated, so we expected a bit of a wait. About 30 minutes later, our party of four was seated. Once seated, it took around ten minutes for someone to greet us and check in. We started with drinks: two micheladas, one margarita, and one cocktail. Unfortunately, all the drinks except for the cocktail were extremely watered down, which was disappointing, especially given the price point. We ordered the Dine Downtown menu along with a dozen oysters to share. The appetizers and oysters arrived quickly--within 5 to 10 minutes--and were a highlight of the night. We especially loved the elote soup and the oysters. Our table was split between favorites: the BBQ oysters and the Shigoku oysters were both excellent. After finishing our appetizers, there was a noticeable delay before the entrees arrived--what felt like close to 30 minutes. We remained patient, but the wait was disappointing. When the entrees finally arrived, dessert was delivered less than five minutes later, which felt rushed and poorly timed--particularly since the dessert included ice cream. We ended up feeling pressured to eat our entrees quickly before dessert melted. Flavor-wise, the entrees were delicious overall. However, the salmon was significantly overcooked and quite tough to cut with a fork, despite having good flavor. We also noticed some inconsistency in portioning: the Baja Arrachera plates at our table came with what looked like a quarter of an elote, while other tables appeared to receive a full elote. Service was unfortunately a miss. While the host and waitstaff were kind and doing their best, it was clear the restaurant was severely understaffed and unprepared for the volume that Dine Downtown brings. For a total of $450 for four people, the experience felt mediocre--great flavors, but inconsistent execution and pacing issues. Will we return? Possibly--but not anytime soon, and we would definitely avoid ordering drinks with ice. That said, the interior of the restaurant is beautiful and very thoughtfully decorated, which added to the overall ambiance.

Located close to Sutter's Fort, Octopus Baja serves up some modern, seafood-inspired Mexican food. I think this place used to be a sandwich shop? I like what they done with the place. It reminds me of being in Tulum with the beach inspired cane seating and stylish surrounds. Also I like the fact that they have those metal stands to put your handbags on next to your table. I discovered these when I was in Mexico City. It was the first time I had seen one of these in Sac and what a pleasant surprise! I like to try out new spots first by going to happy hour. It's kinda like going on a first date, get a coffee/drink first before having dinner and the whole enchilada. Octopus Baja did not disappoint. I liked their Conceptualized Tacos ($9) with grilled shrimp on top. You get three small street taco-sized portions, lots of flavor. I also had the chips and salsa ($5). Love love love those chips! Made in house, they are packed with hints of spice and citrus. Finally, had the house margarita. On HH, it was $7 I believe. Small but mighty, it packed a punch. Or maybe I'm just a light weight these days. Either way, it was not overly sweet, which I cannot stand. So verdict, yes I would give this place a second date. Looking forward to coming back!

Their happy hour is definitely worth trying if you like this type of seafood. The place is super well decorated - I would say upscale nautical, which would sound like an oxymoron, but they really make it work. The staff is extremely nice and accommodating. The torta was good, lots of good flavors. The aguachile was spectacular and very beautifully plated. I think one of the best deals is the blue fin tostada. I have also tried the spicy Caesar salad and it does pack a punch! Super unique for a salad. The Baja shrimp cocktail is served in a goblet and the cocktail part is extremely watery. Definitely not what I expected but perhaps more authentic?

I can here during dine downtown week. They had a special tasting menu for $45 for the week. There was a choice of an appetizer, soup, main course, and dessert. The dessert is a shared course for two. You do have the option to order from the regular menu if you choose not to do the dine downtown week menu. We all chose to do the special menu. The first appetizer was a shrimp crostini. It was one shrimp on a toasted bread with some sauce on top. It was ok, nothing special. The flavors didn't go together. After the first bit, I just ate the shrimp separately and left the bread. The soup came next. You had an option to order the clam chowder or the corn soup. I ordered the clam chowder, because they said the corn soup was spicy. The server brought out the soup and it looked like corn soup. I confirmed with the server, the server confirmed it was clam chowder. I tried it and it tasted like corn soup. I asked again and she went to ask and came back with the same answer. It was clam chowder. It tasted like corn soup. There was not trace of clams. There was a lot of corn and my friend had a little piece of shrimp in hers. The soup was not hot, it was more on the warm to room temp side. The main course I chose was salmon. When they brought out the dish, I can tell right away the salmon looked overcooked. The salmon was a little dry and very firm. It was still edible, so I just ate it. I figured it's no use of sending it back, since they didn't know what soup they served us. It would be the same result. The only thing I really liked was the dessert. It was a butter cake with ice cream. The cake came out warm and it was very moist. It tasted really good. The dessert we had to share, but it looked like it was for one. I could have ate the whole thing by myself. I'm not sure about the whole dine downtown thing. They are supposed to show case their restaurant. They didn't do a very good job. I've never been here before and this was very disappointing. I won't be back.

Went to Octopus Baja during Dine Downtown 2026 and it was okay. It was really busy, but the service wasn't great--our server barely checked on us and it honestly felt like we got forgotten. The ambience was nice and had a good downtown vibe, but the food was just average, and the timing was off since the first two meals came out at the same time.

Stopped by the Baja octopus today to have lunch and I'm so glad that I did. Decided to have the golf shrimp tacos, and they were so flavored and seasoned to perfect perfection. I highly recommend this place. It's very clean and the ambience is relaxed and as an added bonus for my wheelchair users OK before I go, there's plenty of accessibility to go around. Thanks again octopus Baja.

I remember from the video they said this was considered a "bartenders bar",the kind of spot that that bartenders and workers in the industry would hangout after their shifts-I liked the sound of that. Walking up to where I thought the bar was located,it was kinda funny because it was just an innocent looking blue door with the words "Cocktail" along the side-doesn't look like much at all,I'd imagine I've walked by this place many times without thinking of ever going in-that was changing this time. The restaurant is quite small inside with very limited seating, but the outdoor patio is beautiful. Be ready to likely sit outside, but enjoy the atmosphere. We started with the mezcal old fashioned and the cucumber jalapeño margarita. The mezcal old fashioned was a delicious smoky twist on the classic cocktail. The cucumber jalapeño margarita was refreshing, though a little sweeter than I expected and missing the spicy kick I was hoping for. The guacamole was fresh and tasty, but the portion was quite small and barely enough for two people in my opinion. The salsa was also small but it was absolutely phenomenal. The chicken tacos were excellent, with tender chicken that was perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. The enmoladas were also fantastic and are a great way to sample Oaxaca's three unique mole sauces, each with its own distinct character. One thing to note is that the chicken filling is intentionally prepared very simply in traditional Oaxacan cuisine so that the mole remains the star of the dish. If you prefer heavily seasoned meat, this dish may be milder than what you are used to. Overall, everything we tried was delicious and offered a wonderful taste of authentic Oaxacan flavors. Our meal for two included one cocktail each, chips and guacamole, three chicken tacos, and three enmoladas, and came to about $100 with tip.

So the wifey and I are day drinking our way thru Oak Park on this particular Saturday and as we…read morewere kinda walking aimlessly after a few beers at a local brewery-we ran across this simple unassuming door with the name The Butterscotch Den written across it-it's kinda crazy because I had no idea where this bar was and for sure didn't know it was in Oak Park-I couldn't have been happier as this bar has been high on my must visit list for months. When we walked in I knew I was in the perfect spot-this bar has those low lights that all the bars in the 70s and 80s had-giving off a both romantic and mysterious vibe to it-I was in love with the place from that moment on. The music that day was awesome-I heard they have live music at times but at the time of my visit they did not-they were instead playing 90s and 2000s R&B and Hip Hop-it was wonderful-one banger after another-so yeah I was vibing. Our waitress couldn't have been cooler-she was as friendly as can be-suggesting drinks that were both on and off the menu-her and I were sharing tequila stories based on our shared affinity for the Fortaleza tequila they had in stock -which is super rare and it's how I judge every bar-whether or not they have Fortaleza tequila on hand and The Butterscotch Den had multiple bottles on hand. We ended up going with a few drinks that day. -Strawberry Negroni-($13.00)-This one blew my socks off-my favorite drink in the works is a Negroni but this bar makes a Strawberry version of it and let me tell ya-it's dynamite-10/10 rating -Old Fashioned-($12.00)-This is my go-to order at most bars because it's pretty reliable and most bars can make a decent one and I'd say they make a very solid one here-8.2/10 rating -Cucumber Gimlet with Tequila-($11.00)-This drink was made with lime-sweet vermouth and tequila-it was very refreshing and went down way too easy-rating 8.4/10 -Mezcal mystery drink-($12.00)-This was a drink the bartender made that after we declared our love for the smokiness of mezcal-I wouldn't be able to ask for it again unless I got the same waitress but if your a mezcal lover like I am-this drink was top of the line-smokiness intensity off the charts-9.1/10 rating So a little about the place that I picked up during my visit-I guess they serve food-I didn't know that but after my 2nd drink I looked back and saw this entire dining area with table side grills-so I guess the customers cook their own meats and such-pretty cool concept-my visit was strictly a drinking visit so I didn't partake but it looked pretty cool. I guess they are opened most days from 4p-12am and until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights. They do not have a dedicated parking lot for this bar but they are located near 34th and Broadway-so unlimited street parking is available for those who drive here. In closing-I really really enjoyed my visit to The Butterscotch Den and I was pretty sure I had found my new favorite bar in Sacramento with a bar in the Ice Blocks but I am pretty sure that has changed and The Butterscotch Den is my new favorite bar in the greater Sacramento area-if you find yourself looking for a new spot to enjoy some adult beverages or maybe looking for a date night spot-don't hesitate to make your way over to The Butterscotch Den-the place is a true hidden gem. PS-They have a Disco Ball in their lounge area and a vintage non-working cigarette machine-the coolest I tell ya.
