    Miso Soup
    Steve N.

Two of us came in to try this for some sushi. It was a Thursday evening and we scored the last available table. A good sign to see a busy restaurant. Decided to start with a bowl of Miso Soup each accompanied with some deep fried dumplings. We then followed with a Black Dragon Roll and Red Dragon Roll. The food was delicious and at a surprisingly good price. We both enjoyed the meal. Come hungry.

After hearing several recommendations we finally made it out to try the Tonkotsu Ramen. We started with the Tako Wasabi, which is octopus in a wasabi sauce. The serving size was just right. While the sauce was delicious it overpowered the octopus making it hard to taste anything but wasabi. If the only thing you're looking for is an intense burn then you'll probably enjoy this dish. We had a serving of the Tonkotsu Ramen and the Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen. Honestly, it wasn't to our liking. A lot of people adore this place, so we understand that our rating reflects our personal tastes and our experience that evening. Tonkatsu is a pork bone broth, served with tender pork on the side. The broth itself wasn't hot, and lacked the complexity and depth that Tonkatsu broth is famous for. The noodles weren't great; they were clumping together in our bowl when they arrived and had to be pried apart to be eaten. We felt the spice used in Tonkotsu ramen clashed with the broth; it was too vinegary for our taste and experience with this Ramen broth. Also, we got a piece of spoiled lettuce in our soup, which was a real turn-off. The bamboo was a bit tough and the broth didn't have that clean, complex taste that Japanese soups are known for. On a positive note, the pork pieces were very tender and quite delicious. Service was friendly but the restaurant lacked a "vibe" that many Japanese establishments have. As much as we wanted to like October we were disappointed; alas, we wouldn't go back.

    Tonkotsu ramen

This place used to be Izumi but has been rebranded and is now known as October, offering a menu that's a mix of Japanese eats including ramen, katsu, and sushi rolls. The decor is average and standard. Service was pleasant, and food came out quickly. As we dined, we saw a regular stream of skip the dishes and other take-out orders, but that didn't seem to slow down the service at all. The place was about 1/4 full on a weekday evening. In terms of the food, it's nice that we now have relatively legit ramen. The noodles are nicely cooked, and the tonkotsu broth is flavourful, despite not being as rich or complex as some I've had. The meat is sparse (two pieces of Chashu plus an egg) and there's a somewhat excessive helping of preserved bamboo shoots along with some less-than-traditional lettuce making up the vegetable component. Overall, not the most remarkable ramen, but satisfying and certainly the best there is in the city. It fills the craving. The rolls are good. I'm not a fan of the liberal use of cucumber (prefer avocado) but the balance of filling:rice is good. Certainly one of the better rolls in Saskatoon. Prices are very reasonable, at around $12-13 for a roll / ramen. This place makes the cut for a regular dining spot.

    Tonkatsu spicy. Yummm!

Food is delicious, Service can be stretched thin when they are slammed. The private rooms are awesome for larger groups

"What's the sushi situation over there?"... -- which he honestly answered he's sure there are but might be fusions and not as great as Asia's or the Bay Area's. I kid you not, months before we departed on our big adventure to live in the prairies, i ate sushi 3x a week wishfully thinking it will satisfy my cravings once we get to Saskatoon. However, two foodie friends i made through Instagram recommended i check out Sushi Raku and I'm thankful i did! Sushi Raku satisfied my sushi cravings and it is ultimately probably the best i've had in Saskatoon. You might wonder why only 3 stars? -- I feel like if i gave it a 5, it'll be unfair to my sushi spots in California or New York or Asia that are definitely on another level of frickkkken sushi freshness. Sushi Raku's cuts or sashimi are insane. They definitely don't get stingy with that. Their Salmon sashimi was bomb. They also had Toro when I came for my birthday! (And cheaper in price compared to Bay Area) They also had Uni! Tuna- was eh. We got a few pieces that were frozen , which they immediately replaced. Service was impeccable and quick. This place will def be my go-to sushi spot here in Saskatoon.

Highly recommend adding some chili oil to level it up For myself, I ordered the Lemongrass Chicken which comes with an egg , side of carrots and lettuce and 2 spring rolls Once my food arrived, I immediately noticed the green onion and onion smell (not a fan) but I also noticed the delectable aroma of the lemongrass chicken So, I did what I usually do and scraped off the bits of green onion from the rice and proceeded to eat my meal! Rice, chicken and egg were The rice was cooked just the way I liked and lemongrass chicken were so flavourful! The egg was surprising as I expected over-hard but it was more over-medium so it a even better I tried to overcome the onion scent/flavour from the spring rolls but after eating two (delicious) pieces, I decided I really can't anymore so Mr C got lucky and ate the rest for me (along with the lettuce/carrots hehe).

My server told me the locals (ahem...Canadians) can't handle the spice. I didn't enjoy the spring roll as much as I should be. It's was served slightly warm and with the peanut dipping sauce. The sauce was different. I don't know what they use but I swore it tasted like there's hoisin.
