Been donating for over a year now and am concerned at the fact that they don't really wipe down the beds & the counters up front properly. You can literally see stains of blood on the computers/keyboards they use lol - it's so gross knowing you might come into contact with another person's blood when they ask you to lay your arm down against the counter when taking blood pressure. Not only that, but how on Earth are these professionals comfortable working with that stuff on their equipment? Last time I was there on the 24th of April, a phlebotomist gentleman asked me to take a bed that hadn't even been cleaned. There were a couple of pieces of bloody cotton on it and black stains from God knows what. He did end up cleaning it for me when I asked which was very nice of him. This won't keep me from donating, but I write this review hoping they see it and start to take sanitation seriously. I've donated here twice now, and here are some tips: -For your first time, budget THREE HOURS MINIMUM. Others have suggested 2-3 hours; I arrived at 1:05pm and left at 4:45pm, so it took around 3.5 hours for me. Definitely make sure you have enough time so you don't feel rushed. For your second time onwards, it can take anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on the wait. -Bring/wear layers. Although it may be hot outside, the saline that will be pumped into your veins after the plasma is withdrawn will make you feel chilly. -Read through the guidelines; the last thing you want is to wait for hours before finding out you can't donate. Things like recent tattoos/piercings, vaccines, etc. can all delay your donation. Also you'll need your Social Security Card for your first donation! That being said, I really like this location. It's busier than others so the wait can be for a while, but all the staff are very friendly and they try their best to make you comfortable. read more

I had a terrible experience this afternoon at the Van Nuys center. During my physical exam, I asked the nurse why she was asking me if I took a prescription drug which I had already provided information about. She could not tell me why and suggested I speak with the assistant manager. When I spoke to him, he said the nurse told him I flat out refused to answer her question (NOT TRUE) and that I could not donate and had to go home. It's wrong to punish donators for questioning a procedure and I will follow up with customer service on Monday. read more

It was alright going the first two times until the guy wrapping my arm didn't add enough latex on the wrap, I started to bleed out all over my jacket & the guy didn't get into trouble for it either. I try to go back today & was denied because my temperature was too high but the plasma centers allows homeless people come into donate even if they smell like mildew or musty...which makes this donation center even more disgusting. Grifols in Reseda is way better & more professional than this place to be honest because if my temperature was too high then Grifols would have told me to take a seat & retry it in 15 minutes but there's nowhere to take a seat at in Octapharma unless your a new donor, then you will be able to sit in the back....that's my experience so far since the building has been remodel to be even more smaller than before. read more

Not sure what the point of an express pass if I still have wait as long as I did. I earned this express pass after almost coming here for a year straight. Waiting in 3 and 4 hr wait times on top of traffic to get here. If I didn't need the money I would never come here. They don't value their donors nor care about their time spent here. This place used to be good, but the corporation got greedy. They began cutting donor pay and vastly understaffing. The turnover used to be quick, but now it takes three hours to get in and out. They've gone so downhill that I may stop donating entirely. On top of that, the bathrooms are disgusting and never have toilet paper. Update: I just got an email that they're closing on Sundays now which was the best day to go. This garbage facility is really going in on those budget cuts for the greedy people at the top. I started coming here in 2017. I had no issues. Would have given this place 4-5 stars then. At the time I presented at a cis male. Never had a problem. Fast forward to now, I decided to come back. (I am transitioning, and now presents as feminine). Huge surprise, I have been turned away twice. 1st I was told certain lab results came back too low for me to be a donor, then today, 9 days later, I tried again. I was just told that the same results were too high. I don't know why I bothered to humiliate myself by trying. Everyone was nice when they thought I was a male, that niceness is now gone. I am leaving 2 stars because I try to be fair. If you are cis gender, you will probably be treated well. For my trans sisters, you will be treated like you have dirty blood. Sad. read more

Every time i come in it takes nearly and hour to get screened when there 5 people ahead of me in line. On top of there being multiple people on the floor it takes nearly 30 minutes just to get sticked, as a RETURNING DONOR. During the peak hours all the nurses are just chatting with each other and leaving only one person to screen at the front and when there are several people waiting to get sticked they just sit in the corner and pretend to go over the patient details while not tending to anyone. Defines will be looking to move to a different plasma company after this. Its should not take nearly 2 hours when there are this many nurses to treat patients, and this is a visible issue with many patients. read more

I've been coming for quite awhile that I accumulated enough to earn a year long express pass but was not given one because I needed to show it from my email and the not app. The app showed over 10k points. This is very disappointing. I delete all my emails all the time including the thrash folder n not once do I recall getting an email regarding the year long pass. 3/29/2024 I had to ENDURE the threatening/menacing tone of voice by Chris (a supervisor) because of a minor fuss. He was irate that I couldn't remember the name of a phlebotomist with an attitude who PURPOSELY SKIPPED ME IN THE DONATING AREA, despite her seeing the orange labeled EXPRESS PASS. Do I have to escalate this to the upper echelons of management, to headquarters to have this matter taken seriously? Do the big-wigs above Katie's bosses in the corporate office need to be aware of Chris and Marlene's shrewd actions? In the past, I've expressed a concern like this to Katie (general manager) in an email. I've had an issue with Marlene (the one who purposely skipped me) previously because she acted with vindictiveness. In any case, Chris encroached on my physical space and in a menacing tone demanded that I not use visual attributes to identify another phlebotomist. But how does someone identify another person when the name isn't instantly recalled or it's unknown? Humans are descriptive and use attributes to identify others by weight, height, gender when a name is not recalled or when it's unknown. THE BIGGER QUESTION IS, WHY DID HE REFUSE TO REPRIMAND HER? Additionally, he spoke to me in a tone reflective of a stressed-out employee on a "power-trip," -- one who abhors having his "authority" questioned. Does he forget we're the DONORS? I'm NOT his subordinate nor under his supervision. Any other sensible person in the corporate world (if witnessed at close proximity) would see him as a TOXIC BOSS, despite him being a low-level supervisor. As a side note: Donors have witnessed how biased he is towards some of his co-workers (like his buddy in "the freezer") and how he is rather objectionable towards others. We all see it. Again, I was PURPOSELY skipped by Marlene while using an EXPRESS PASS; NOT THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENS. Subsequently, when I told Chris I would need to speak to management about my concern, he darted over to an open computer by the wall to "write-up" a C.Y.A (cover your *ss) statement. I've been written-up lately about insignificant things at the behest of Chris/Darlene since I opined about my perception of Chris' work ethic, and after having unfortunate contact with Marlene's toxic attitude months ago. This never happened three, four, or twelve years ago when I was pursuing my master's degree at USC and started donating. Again, their uncouth pattern of behavior towards me is highly suspicious. Is it suggestive of an aim to get me booted permanently from donating? Conversely, I can see how the immediate "chain of command" would come to Chris' defense out of work-congeniality, but they're NOT Chris' subordinates, and I'm certain he has NOT spoken to them (his bosses) in a menacing or demeaning tone. In any case, [for Chris], the way to complete his objective is to conjure up tiny infractions via exaggeration of the nature of events through a plethora of "write-ups" (by him or others under his supervision) to establish a written record to warrant justification for permanent removal of donor privilege. This is not only unprofessional; this is wickedness, and it legally constitutes a form of harassment. This reflects badly on Octapharma, a place I have respected for a while for the lifesaving service they provide to the health industry. I have a nephew with hemophilia. I understand. But Chris and Marlene are tainting Octapharma with a toxic atmosphere. read more

Quite honestly the employees aren't talented at what they do. I did this more out of curiously than necessity. I was also going to write and article about the experience but I digress. I was surprised to find that the people there aren't the nicest. Or maybe not surprised more appalled since this isn't a donation but a business and businesses run on customer service but we live in a country that hates poor people so I shouldn't be surprised. My problem isn't with the customer service thought but rather the skill of the employees. I'd gone a total of three times. Yesterday was my third and from the moment the women stuck a needle in me it felt wrong. The problem is these people aren't nurses. They have no bedside manner to speak of. There are no questions about how you feel etc. The pain at the end got so bad I asked her to remove it but she took her time wrapped me up and here we are. I've now scheduled and appointment with my actual doctor who is much nicer to check this out. No amount of money is worth this or maybe it is? !!!DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!! The staff are incredibly rude for no reason and assume that everyone who donates blood is a drug addict or homeless and they will treat you as if you are beneath them. They are very unprofessional not to mention how unsanitary this place is, they do not switch their gloves between clients or after they use the restroom! They enter the restroom with a pair of gloves and use those same gloves on their patients! Disgusting! They also LIE about how much plasma they got from you so they can give you less money! You have to ask to have your hydration level checked at the front office if not the staff who take your blood will LIE so they can give you less money!
