My favorite is the New Year Block Party, complete with a crab pot drop. But there's also block parties all year round for different events. Then there's the annual Blackbeard Pirate festival over in Mill Point Park and Bay Days. The Virginia Air & Space Museum also offers a lot of events for kids and families - never a bad shout for young and old explorers alike. Dining or Drinking? There's plenty of options in Downtown, with the favorites being along E Queen St. Marker 20, Venture, Brown Chicken Brown Cow, Taphouse, Musasi, and over on Settlers Landing Rd you have Bull Island Brewing Company and Latitude 37. There's plenty of residential options, two higher education facilities, and retail options - just a stone throw away from I-64. If you haven't made a trip down here, give it a go. Retail shops are mostly independent and offer a range of unique gifts, art, jewelry, clothing, pottery, and more! So shop small, and support local!!! Downtown is defined by it's waterfront, and of course the marina and piers. There are multiple garages (mostly FREE) and on-street parking spaces throughout, but better yet, on a sunny day, the walkable area along Hampton River waterfront is breathtaking and incomparable.

Lake Shores Plaza is what I consider one of the least enticing shopping centers in Bayside. It…read morehasn't received the same type of quality facelift many others have in order make it more enticing to businesses. The location is probably the main reason for its decline over the years. The shopping center is located directly opposite Joint Expedition Base Little Creek. Although base housing is located across Shore Drive I suspect more of their shopping is done on the base at the exchange, commissary & other shopping, fast food and gas stations inside the base gates. The anchor store is a Food Lion, which appears to be smaller than their other Food Lions in the area. It's much closer to me than other Food Lions. There are a few of the grocery items I buy that are the grocer's branded products. But if I shop at a Food Lion I'm more likely to stop at one on my route home from another location. The businesses in the main shopping center and out parcels are varied including Arby's, Taco Bell, Jade Garden, Las Palmas, a hair salon, credit union, tobacco & vape shop, nail salon, barber shop among others, Decades ago there was a wonderful diner in one of the out parcels that was a favorite of my family for years. But it's long gone. The shopping center adds value to the neighborhood & is a quick place to shop for essentials out of stock in my favorite grocers. But it's not an often visited place for me.

The Cypress Point Shopping Center is a shell of its former self. Sadly the space that housed a…read moreFarm Fresh Supermarket has been empty for years. The large supermarket previously occupied the portion of the L shaped shopping center facing Diamond Springs Road. Doing business from the corner spaces are a dollar store & Sentara Family Medicine & & Sentara Therapy Center. Gone is Surf Rider & other longtime occupants of the side of the shopping center facing Wesleyan Drive. Lil Road Cat Rescue occupies a number of spaces. Well reviewed Suphan Thai is located on the same side as are a number of other eateries: Wing Stop, Ibis Cuisine & Big Apple Pizzeria to name a few. There are several bars, a tailor, nail salon, small gym, & day care center. Out parcels contain a gas station. The shopping center is still maintained. But it gives the daytime aura of being devoid of customers, especially on the empty supermarket side. When I went last there were only a few cars in the very ample parking lots. Possibly it's busier at night with restaurant & bar traffic. It would be great, considering the plethora of housing surrounding it, if the former grocery store space had a good occupant that would increase foot traffic as it once did. I remember the time when it was a busy place.
