This is our favorite local ice-cream shop. We have been coming here for quite a while now. I love the unique flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. I'm a sorbet person, so I always get the water-based flavors. My favorite flavors are guava, cactus pear and yellow cherry. But all the fruit flavors I tried so far are delicious. My best friend and I discovered Ocean Rainbow about 6 years ago. I don't venture to that part of Oceanside too often, so when a coworker recently mentioned it on Facebook I was astonished and ecstatic that it's still up and operational! I love this little corner-situated ice cream shop! Sure it's small and not many places to sit are offered but oh boy does it make up for it in its ice cream choices and prices! The ambience is really fun too; you're surrounded by brightly colored walls and a really nice staff behind the counter. So today I got a 2 scoop in waffle cone: 1 scoop of rice flavored, 1 scoop strawberry flavored! My signif. other got a 2 scoop in waffle cone as well: 1 scoop lime flavored, 1 scoop pistachio flavored! Total: $4.00 ($4.50 because I charged the purchase to my bankcard. No biggie) Some other fun flavor options worth mention: Tequila Burnt milk Tamarindo And the coolest part about this little gem is that they make their own ice cream. Absolutely love how Ocean Rainbow offers a variety of different things. I felt so happy like a little kid in an ice cream shop even though I'm not a kid... And I didn't even get ice cream. Lol. There was a line out the door when I came so that was a good sign. The only reason why I came here was because I was craving some elotes but they had a fridge full of delicious Fresa Con Crema. My favorite!! I grabbed one and waited in line and just looked at the different ice cream flavors they had. There were so many and some pretty interesting ones that I would love to come back and try. When it was my turn, I gave the guy my Fresca Con Crema cup and he filled it with granola and honey and just a whole bunch of goodness. I also ordered my elotes which came with cheese and mayo. I was a little disappointed since there wasn't that much mayo and it didn't taste as good as other elotes I had but for the price, not bad not bad. Also they don't have different hot sauce to add to the elotes. Anyways, I didn't stop there, I also got a bag of chicharones and asked for hot sauce on it. Been here a few times while visiting folks in Oceanside. The prices are great, the employees have all been great and the selection of ice cream flavors is great. The overall ice creams themselves are good, but nothing great. If you are looking for a decadent, rich, creamy, ice cream then I think you will be disappointed. If you are looking to fill that little ice cream craving we all get from time to time this place will fill that void. I highly recommend the place if you live nearby, or are in the area, especially if you are on a budget or have a passel of kids to buy for. Keep in mind the line can go 10 deep out the door, so you may want to avoid the traditional hours (lunch time, after regular work hours, etc.) unless you don't mind waiting a bit. They are very generous on their samples, by the way, but don't hold the line up too damn much because you have the need to sample 5 out of 10 flavors! Thanks! The shop itself isn't really appealing..Kind of whatev..not too much going on with the place..just three small tables to sit at...the freezers etc... I think their ice cream flavors are terrible. Too sweet and mostly taste like syrup and ice...not milky the way ice cream is supposed to be. They also have lines that are way too long and customers that get served way too slowly, and it takes forever to finally order and get your ice cream. The place also looks really dirty. read more

This is a tiny, unassuming shop, tucked on the very end of the row of shops on the El Camino Real side of the shopping center at the corner of Mission and El Camino Real (with Stater Brothers and Killer Pizza from Mars). The shop stocks some traditional flavors--vanilla, cookies and cream, etc.--but the real reason to come try Ocean Rainbow is the variety of nonstandard fare. The shop has an array of popsicles and cream bars in one case. Fresh cut fruit may be added to drinks and served on the side of ice-cream. I ordered a waffle cone with coffee and mango chili ice-creams, for under three dollars. Here's how I would break down ratings for various categories: Service: ***** The ladies behind the counter could not have been nicer or more efficient. I observed one who took time to answer questions of a customer who was selecting from the popsicle/cream bar options. My server provided a generous taste to help me choose my flavors. The shop: *** This is not a "destination" location; you're not going to take your family to eat your treat on site. There are a handful of tiny tables seating two patrons each, but the space is tight. Although the tables, equipment and decor seem a bit tired, every surface looked immaculately clean. Ignore the understated decor, folks, that's not why you will visit. Price: ***** Ocean Rainbow offers a truly affordable treat. An equivalent waffle cone plus two scoops at either Baskin Robins or Hagen Das is double the cost. Now, for the most important rating, the ice-cream: Much like another Yelper, Tom V., I would rate the "regular" flavor a ***. My coffee scoop was tasty and acceptable, but lacked the rich creaminess and saturated flavor of a Bryers or Ben and Jerry type option. However, the mango-chili was EXCEPTIONAL--*****! The consistency felt like a silky home-made, just a bit firmer than soft serve. The flavor combined the fruity sweetness of pure mango with just the right touch of chili heat. THIS is the reason you need to try Ocean Rainbow, and also the reason you'll come back again and again as I plan to do. This place is the Best! I thought I had to go to Mexico to find these treats which I LOVE then someone told me about this place. I was pleasently surprised. Ok Their hours are everyday from 11-9. They have authentic mexican ice cream bars, bolis, ice cream, yogurt, raspados, diablitos, tostilocos, nachos, chamango, assorted fruit bowels with cottege cheese and lechera or honey, and almost anything you can think of. I have tried tostilocos. Fully loaded with tostitos chips, cueritos, jicama, cucumber, peanuts, lemon, valentina, tapatio and chamoy. They are so delicious. The ones in Mexico are better but this is the best in CA. Also tried Diablitos. Lime ice cream with valentina, fresh squeezed lime, chili powder, chamoy and tamarindo candy stick. It was better than the ones in Mexico. I have tried alot in Mexico and this one is the best. The lime ice cream is what made this stand out. I tried the lime ice cream plain. It was creamy but still frozen enough to keep a good texture for that tarty flavor. Very good ice cream. The tubs it comes in looks freshly made not store bought. Last item I tried was called chamango. It was the same ingredients as diablito but mango ice cream and fresh mango slices. It was very deliciouos. The only compliant about that was mango slices were still a bit raw. But over all was really good and would get it again. I have been going to this place every weekend and can't get enough. I've been here quite a few times now (three of my times being this week) and I must say I've really liked everything I've tried here so far, though I haven't tried everything. The first ice cream I tried was the Rice ice cream, or as I like to call it, "Rice Cream." This flavor is the one I'll usually pick since is very lightly sweet tasting and has a great overall taste. The soft rice bits give it a nice touch in my opinion and that is coming from someone who usually hates chunks in ice creams or yogurts heh. The Tequila flavor I tried just a small sample of. It's tasty but wow! It isn't something I personally like since it's very-- different. Strong in flavor. Too strong for me! It's definitely worth tasting to see how you feel about it. :) Next flavor I've had is the Strawberry Shortcake. This flavor is awesome. The strawberry swirl in it is very tasty. Overall it's a nice creamy ice cream without the overpowering taste of cheese cake (I'm not a fan of cheese cake in general but this was really good!). The other day I tried the "fresa con crema." This was the best in my opinion. I had eyeballed the picture of it in the window all the times I had come but wasn't sure what it was. I decided to ask this time and try it out. It smells like a delicious cake frosting and is full of fresh, cut up strawberries. It tasted awesome. The only issue I personally had with it was the cream was a little toward the room temperature side rather than really cold. But that was nothing I couldn't fix by throwing it into my freezer for 20 minutes when I got home. :) It was totally worth it. I highly recommend trying it~ Overall, this place is great. It's a little small and tends to be very busy but I think it's worth the wait. Give this place a try! read more

We came here on a Friday night for dessert. Being from Arizona I was drawn to it being both having ice cream and raspados. Inside was a little dingy, not the greatest ambiance like most raspado places I've been to in Tucson so no big deal. Two people were working there, and service was not up to par with any other ice cream place I've ever been to. Usually ice cream places are pretty welcoming and tell you to let them know if you want to sample any flavors. We got no such greeting. We got a hello from the guy. The lady didn't even look up. Both of them looked like they hated life. Too bad too, because if the environment were more welcoming I'd make this one of my pit stops in Oceanside.
