Love this Park!!! So beautiful and unspoiled!! Nature's prescription for weary souls!! The rangers and staff on hand were so friendly and welcoming! We did the hike on the Big Oak Trail and found Sasquatch! So we took a pic with him and collected our keychains at the Visitor Center!! Great day to do a quick morning hike on our way to Wilde Manor!! So scenic and peaceful!! It will calm your spirits and relax your mind! Highly recommend this park!! read more

Occoneechee is a beautiful place! From peaceful hiking to the energy-filled splash pad, lake access to tent/lodge camping, and a museum documenting the rich history, it has something for everyone. read more

Recommend this state park. The pictures you see here are C 32. It's right on the water. If you want to see the sunset get a camping site on the other side from this view you see the sunrise it's close to the restrooms and firewood. just a word to the wise when you're asleep at night and you hear things scrambling around outside it's probably only a squirrel or raccoon. Put your food up, but it's unavoidable. Don't try to convince yourself that it is a bear. read more

My Husband & I love camping at State Parks and Occoneechee has been the one we've returned to the most ever since we moved to the Commonwealth in 2001. If I had started doing yelp reviews 25 years ago you would have heard me rave about this park to everyone on line but as the years have passed I'm noticing some changes that no longer have me feeling the same as I did. The past several years I've noticed there have been camp hosts here which I'm not especially fond of as a taxpayer. I understand the rangers may not feel they should be spending their time cleaning restrooms or checking firepits for ashes but I've witnessed them sitting in the rather expensive vehicles our tax payer dollars furnish them with doing essentially nothing now that these hosts are here. Occasionally they patrol the area but I remember in years past when they were more engaging with the public precisely because they tended to these hosting responsibilities. It may be just me but I'd rather see the state employ a local who lives in the area to come in twice daily to check on & clean the restrooms than to hire an out of state couple who is going to park their unit in one of the rental spaces & set up camp here each season. Many of the state parks have already erected cabins & Yurts that I know don't have a 100% occupancy rate. Can they really afford to offer a retired couple an otherwise rentable space for the entire season? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe these out of state hosts are actually paying a reduced rate to enjoy our parks amenities rather than receiving a wage & in return they agree to act as dorm parents where cleaning restrooms is just part of the deal, idk but I'd much rather see the Division of Virginia State Parks director establish a young rangers in training program to do these menial tasks if the adult rangers feel their time is too valuable to be camp hosts. I want to see our beautiful state parks succeed & remain in operation for generations to come but having 24/7 out of state camp monitors takes away from fully enjoying the state park experience in my opinion. Having said all that the park itself has remain pretty much the same as it was 25 years ago with the exception of a new playground so it's as close to nature as you'll find if you enjoy a peaceful camping experience. read more

VA State Park, Occoneechee, is beautiful. It's sitting on the reservoir Buggs Island Lake. Hard to believe it's a lake. It's enormous and covers a lot of area in and around Clarksville, VA. Occoneechee has cabins and a lot of tent camping areas! I tent camped here for 2 nights with electric and water plus a short trail to the lake. Major awesome! I was so happy. They had live music at the amphitheater and you could hear it all over the park. You can do all things water here!!! They had a playground with splash sprinklers also. I loved my spot there, but was visited twice by an uninvited park guest. To keep it short, I called the park police, Ranger Austin, my hero, to assist the situation. I was very thankful he was there. I'm very glad I made the call. It's easy not to report situations but perhaps my report might save someone else in similar situation in the future. I wish I could have acknowledged Park Ranger (Officer), Austin, in a Ranger Appreiation form before I left. **Please stay alert and aware of your surroundings, No matter where you are and.... see something, say something. Thanks Austin!! Thanks for a great stay Occoneechee State Park!! read more

For an extended weekend of camping, hiking & exploring we selected Occoneechee State Park. It's only 90 miles from greater Richmond and reviews along with photographs made it look ideal for us. We got in Thursday after 5 & there was no one at the main entrance. We then drive to the campground following the signage. We self guided our way to our reserved site since there's no Range station to check in. Despite that little confusion we found our site and set up. We encountered the Camp Host an hour or so later. He was polite & helpful. We really appreciate how spread out (& wooded) the campsites in Campground C are. The trails we hiked were nice albeit a bit overgrown. The water views are beautiful and almost worth the drive by themselves. We look forward to our next visit. read more

Nicely manicured location. Not a lot to do in the area if you're not boating or fishing. Very well maintained, quiet and peaceful and we were there over Labor Day weekend! Would've been 5 stars if they had full hookups for campers. read more

We took our first camping trip here last week. It was absolutely AMAZING. Weather was perfect for hiking, getting our toes wet and just enjoying nature. VERY CLEAN. Our bath house was completely up to par and our tent spot was in the perfect position to see the sunrise and fall. We will definitely be back again! read more

I can't wait to come back!!! My friend and I chose to come on a while one weekend and so glad we did. Even though we had to struggle through a few rain storms, out spot was perfect. Right on the water and perfect for a hammock and single man tent. We also shared the spot with our new friend Ricky. Ricky the raccoon. I forgot the spot number, but if you are on the tent side by the water make sure your food is secured and not just in a paper bag. When we woke up the next morning our fresh rolls were gone with the plastic bag sitting next to the shelter. Darn little tyke. We lived and learned. Also keep an eye out for poison ivy. I had the joy of getting it all over my hands and knees from setting up my hammock. Didn't occur to me the three leaf plant growing up the tree was my enemy..... ugh... We walked a few of the trails while there, but I'd definitely like to go back and see more. What we did hike was picturesque. So much green and some Kool little gems hidden away. All in all I'd say this park is a winner. Can't wait till it warms up a bit to come back. read more

Beautiful state park with so much shade! We took the dogs for a walk along the trails around the Terraced Gardens. Trails are clearly marked and very easy to walk. Definitely a hidden gem. read more

There is so much to do at this park for any age. Camping, state of the art cabins, hikes, horse trails and beautiful water views. You can get gas on the water, rent a slip for your boat for the weekend, week or year. The visitor center is full of information on things to do in the area. They also have tons of information on native America history and culture. In the summer they have activities for adults and children. Kids can play games and make arts and crafts projects for no additional costs. This is something open to those staying at the park and locals. You can buy a year long pass to enjoy the park as much as you want or it just costs $4 for a one day parking pass. While at the park remember that park rangers are just like police and can give you tickets so be mindful and respectful of posted speed signs and other laws that are the same both inside and outside the park. I encourage everyone to take advantage of our wonderful virginia park system!!! Getting out and exploring nature is fun for all ages! read more

This is one of my favorite state parks. On this trip, we stayed in Cabin 1. It did not disappoint, the cabin was exceptionally clean and had all the basics for meal prep and service. You will need to have your own bedding and towels, but just about everything else is available. There is no TV, however, Cell service (Verizon) works well. We streamed what we needed on tablets. I will add, we have stayed here in the campground and the camping spots are exceptional as well. Buggs Island Brewery for adult beverages and right across the street is the Bridgewater Bar and Grill. Both these places are exceptional as well and only a 10 minute drive. The Bad- bring an egg crate topper or equivalent for the mattress and your own pillows! read more

My husband and I stayed for several days in the C loop. We made reservations online. The check-in process at the office was painless. The sites are nice, clean, large...no complaints. My husband likes to fish so camping on a site near the water is perfect. Bathrooms include toilets, sinks and showers...and all is cleaned late morning everyday from what I observed. No campfires until 4p and quiet hours start at 10p...we are here in April...I think from May-October, you can have campfires anytime. Several nice boat ramps. The trail system is real nice and pretty flat. read more

Absolutely enjoy every one of my stays at Occoneechee! The cabins are always nice and clean, and the members kind.

Occoneechee State Park is such a wonderful place to visit! They have a new splash pad that just opened & it has been packed all summer long!! Everyone loves it! Occoneechee State Park is a premier park in the Virginia State Park system. It is extremely clean and well maintained. The park has 3 boat landings, 11 cabins, 2 lodges, a playground, and campgrounds for tents, and even RVs up to 35 feet long. The park also has an Equestrian campground with several horse stalls. Many of the campsites in the park have water and electric hook ups. The park is protected 24 hours by the Virginia State Park Police making for a very safe and secure environment. The park sits directly on Kerr Lake also known as Buggs Island Lake where the world record 143 pound catfish was caught in 2011! The park also has the best staff who are always friendly and ready to help! read more

I take my grandchildren to this park quite often. They like to use the archery range that was recently opened. I can sit in my camping chair while they shoot their bows and take in all that nature has to offer. The park staff are great and the park police keep the park a safe place for children. Some horseback riders came by and let the children pet the horses. Everyone is always very polite; just a really happy place to spend time. read more
