We stayed in the park for 3 nights and really had a great time. We were very impressed with the rangers and how helpful and friendly they all were. The sites were nicely spaced apart and the bath house was very clean. The camp host of Campground B was great as well. Definitely recommend

    Nice scenery.

VA State Park, Occoneechee, is beautiful. It's sitting on the reservoir Buggs Island Lake. Hard to believe it's a lake. It's enormous and covers a lot of area in and around Clarksville, VA. Occoneechee has cabins and a lot of tent camping areas! I tent camped here for 2 nights with electric and water plus a short trail to the lake. Major awesome! I was so happy. They had live music at the amphitheater and you could hear it all over the park. You can do all things water here!!! They had a playground with splash sprinklers also. I loved my spot there, but was visited twice by an uninvited park guest. To keep it short, I called the park police, Ranger Austin, my hero, to assist the situation. I was very thankful he was there. I'm very glad I made the call. It's easy not to report situations but perhaps my report might save someone else in similar situation in the future. I wish I could have acknowledged Park Ranger (Officer), Austin, in a Ranger Appreiation form before I left. **Please stay alert and aware of your surroundings, No matter where you are and.... see something, say something. Thanks Austin!! Thanks for a great stay Occoneechee State Park!!

For an extended weekend of camping, hiking & exploring we selected Occoneechee State Park. It's only 90 miles from greater Richmond and reviews along with photographs made it look ideal for us. We got in Thursday after 5 & there was no one at the main entrance. We then drive to the campground following the signage. We self guided our way to our reserved site since there's no Range station to check in. Despite that little confusion we found our site and set up. We encountered the Camp Host an hour or so later. He was polite & helpful. We really appreciate how spread out (& wooded) the campsites in Campground C are. The trails we hiked were nice albeit a bit overgrown. The water views are beautiful and almost worth the drive by themselves. We look forward to our next visit.

We took our first camping trip here last week. It was absolutely AMAZING. Weather was perfect for hiking, getting our toes wet and just enjoying nature. VERY CLEAN. Our bath house was completely up to par and our tent spot was in the perfect position to see the sunrise and fall. We will definitely be back again!

My husband and I stayed for several days in the C loop. We made reservations online. The check-in process at the office was painless. The sites are nice, clean, large...no complaints. My husband likes to fish so camping on a site near the water is perfect. Bathrooms include toilets, sinks and showers...and all is cleaned late morning everyday from what I observed. No campfires until 4p and quiet hours start at 10p...we are here in April...I think from May-October, you can have campfires anytime. Several nice boat ramps. The trail system is real nice and pretty flat.

Dropped by today with our dog to walk the trails. It's quiet and beautiful and is a great outing for a weekend afternoon!

    The lake was so inviting

Ask the Community - Occoneechee State Park

    Can you swim?

There are no designated beach areas on the park, which is surprising for a park that has so much shore line.

Every day we would eat drink and swim all day and had a blast. There was no place to buy wood at this park. So make sure that you have some wood for fires. We bought some from a 7-11 prior to coming. But we also found a tree that fell over that someone at the park cut up and let us take to burn. The bathrooms were not the best. Only one of the toilets door would close In-N-Out bathroom. But if you walked a little there was another bathroom. The showers didn't allow for much privacy. But we were swimming every day and got a quick shower in when no one else was there. Some of the sites have these cement areas near the water that are not comfortable to lay in. But I saw a few younger purple on them. I didn't even like sitting in them. Also near the water they get slippery. Make sure you are bringing some type of water shoes. There were a lot of people that had campers and boats near us. Lots of kids and many dogs. A great family destination.

With several access points, hiking, camping, swimming, fishing and boat slips there's no end to summer time enjoyment out here. And lemme tell you, this lake is huge. I wasn't quite aware of Kerr Lake until this stop through. As it seems most of the lake is in Virginia, it's not really heard of as much in NC, I feel like. But it's significant to the history of the area and of course for the energy infrastructure of this part of the country. I took a scenic drive along the expanse of the lake and drove into VA where I crossed the dam "just to say I did". The sheer size of the lake makes for incredible views. While it isn't a park that I see myself going back to anytime soon, I know it would be enjoyable in particular for families going on summer trips to camp and enjoy the water.

The next day we stopped at The Virginia Tasting Cellar which is just off of the trail in Farmville. There are restrooms along the trail and plenty of shade for when you want to take a break. I'm originally from the area and whenever I visit home, I find myself running or walking with my family on the trail. In high school, we used to do cross country runs here! High Bridge Trail is a rail trail and the main portion is flat, which is perfect for gentle walking or fast running. I also recently learned that there are plenty of offshoots from the trail that have some elevation gains and make for nice hikes! While you're there, try and check out the Smyth Trail and the Camp Paradise trail. I really enjoyed seeing the old bridges and being near the river. Don't forget your bug spray! When I go, I usually park in two places: 1) public free parking in Farmville, and take the trail portion going back towards the river, or 2) park at the River Road parking lot, which is $2 self-pay/honor system, or free if you have the Virginia Adventure Pass. What I love about this trail is that there is something for everyone. I always see families with people of all ages (including babies in strollers), dog walkers, and people cycling! As the main trail is a bit gravelly, you will need a bigger tire for this trail. Side note: I would love to see is a small investment to make some of the trail wheelchair accessible. It's such a lovely park and would be wonderful if truly everybody could enjoy it. I will definitely be back to High Bridge and I really look forward to my next visit there.

On the hot summer day that I visited the still air and ample insects, made it a bit of a rough experience. A short walk yielded some decent views, but it was not my favorite park. It appeared to me that large part of the attraction based on the signage that was displayed around the park was that this is a good place for nighttime observations due to limited artificial light in the area. That sounds nice. The place does require a Virginia parking pass or fee.

They also have snacks and coffee as you walk in. I wish I remembered the Rangers name working the VC. She was awesome. They had some weather boards and N.A.S.A. items available, I had to ask why? Well it seems this park is so far out (And it sure is!), that astronomers come to look at the stars. There is a very large yard where hundreds of people could set up and look into the skies. I was so excited to hear that. I want to do that too! She said they also rent telescopes at the VC.! Too cool. She said they also get a lot of serious Big Foot hunters out there as well due to the sightings that have been announced. Well I was good and reeled in by that point. I bought a couple things for the family and headed into the "reptile room" because I forgot what they called it. They had about 4 snakes and a couple turtles in there. Really nice with geat animal decor on the walls as well. The Ranger suggested a hiking trail that over looks Buggs Island and 360 view of tje Staunton River. I saw more than 10 white herons. They always seem to be just out of camera shot though! LOL. I tried. They have a pool with water slides and a playground. Campground, picnic area right on the water. Very nice!!! I saw 3 other cars. It's literally way out there. :) Oh! One of the things I bought was a Big Foot Mood Ring! I love it! I know I posted a lot of pictures :)
