Spent a week here this summer while out on our walkabout, a beautiful lake recreation area. The lake sits right on the border between Virginia and North Carolina. The states actually share this lake as they split it pretty much right down the middle. Maintained and paved roadways throughout the park, concrete and gravel sites both. No FHU.
We camped on the NC side, accessing it through the town of Henderson. Which is the closest town with any services and supplies, so grab what you need before heading in to the park. Otherwise its a half hour back for supplies.
There are several camp areas within this park, some are primative while others have electric and water hook ups. We reserved a site in the back, down by the lake. A large shaded back in with electric and water on pavement, with a concrete slab, with a picnic table, freestanding grill and a metal fire ring. The site was plenty deep for my rig and truck to park with room to spare. A nice pine tree canopy all around plus the open spacing between sites gives this area an open private feeling with no one directly next to you. Our site was about 200' off the lake and it felt open and peaceful. Down on the waters edge the camp sites are much closer together. So when selecting a space keep that in mind, if you want to be on the lake other campers are right next to your site. If you want space, quiet and privacy the sites off the water have more space and trees.
Reservations are simple online, or you can call their dedicated phone line. The maps are okay but do not give an accurate layout for accessing each site. If you have the chance to drive through beforehand its recommended. My fifth wheel is pretty good sized and getting it into the site was a challenge not seeing actually how close the trees were across the road from the entry into the space.
Once backed in and set up though, it was a beautiful spot in the park with a nice view of the lake and water and within a short one minute walk to the waters edge.
Check in is at 3pm, check out is noon. Only one way into the park and you must stop at the enterance station and get your pass. This park also locks the gates at night (9pm) so access is restricted during the evening hours with no in or out until 8 am. So plan accordingly. All of their admission papers, website and emails state this as well.
4 Stars a solid rec area with lake access, open spaces and decent facilities
