Wow, just wow! If in the area, or if you are looking for a fun day trip, check out High Bridge Trail State Park. You can bike, walk/hike, or horseback ride on the 31 miles of trails. Or you just enjoy the bridge and the amazing view! Before you go, be sure to check out all the details on the website, http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/high-bridge-trail#general_information Here's a quick run down. If you just want to check out the bridge over the Appomattox River, park at the Camp Paradise Entrance located at 1681 Aspen Hill Road, Rice, Virginia 23966, this is the closest parking lot near the bridge Be aware it costs $2 to park and it's an unmanned, honor payment system. You place $2 (cash or check) in an envelope and proceed to the parking lot. From the parking lot, you hop on the trail and it's only .3 miles to the bridge. Should you need, there are restrooms located at this entrance. The views from the bridge are breathtaking...as you can see from everyone's pictures. If you have more time, enjoying the rest of the trail. It's nice and wide, and made of crushed limestone. Super easy to walk or bike on! I can't wait to check out the view once the leaves have changed! Perhaps, I will see you there! Cheers!

Very clean! Great place to go for a jog.

Well kept and clean! Great place to ride your bike or go for a jog. You can even bring your horse and ride your horse. #vafun

I'll give this a 5 because it's free and because it's cool. I did have in my head though that the bridge was longer than it actually was. I thought the Bridge was 33 miles long. Actually the trail was 33 miles long and the bridge was .5 miles long. Oh well. So I hiked from the Farmville entrance to the bridge. 5 miles from the point where I parked to the bridge. .5 on the bridge. Then back. If I were to do it again, no doubt I'd ride the bike. The trail is flat. Seriously flat. An amateur could ride 10 miles easy here! The bridge itself was indeed impressive. The river made me feel like I was in the Amazon. The intermittent rain was refreshing. I saw: 2 black snakes. 3 cardinals. 1 tiny brown salamander. 1 fat rabbit. Lots of butterflies and dragonflies.

Having been to a lot of state parks I believe they all should have something that stands out against the rest. It's not a competition but in reality it would be nice to be able to do or see something at each park that your not able to see or do somewhere else. Of course the landscape and waterviews are different. Different trees or flowers, and rivers or lakes are spotted at parks but, this park goes beyond that! A bridge! A very tall and long bridge is at this park. What used to be an old railroad tressel has been repurposed into a walking trail. This bridge can either be walked on or ridden on by your bike. It is over trees and then a river. However it is very high up. There are pitstops on the bridge for you to rest as well as snap some great photos of your surroundings. There are several entrances to this park. We choose one closest to the entrance. We parked across the street in a very small parking lot. The parking lot has the customary parking stubs to pay for your park visit as well as a bathroom. The parking lot does require you to cross over a street. You even pass a house before you get to the bridge. I didn't explore very much of this park as I can specifically for the bridge. I was excited to see there is a 5k coming to the bridge next month (June 2016) which would be fun just to see all the people on it!

We really enjoyed our morning hike to the High Bridge on the High Bridge Trail. The view was very beautiful and the trail was very nice. Friendly staff, friendly visitors, and an overall great experience! We will be back. This is a great asset to Prince Edward County! There is a $4 parking fee. After this, stroll through Downtown FarmVille and go to The Outdoor Adventure Store to learn more about the outdoor adventures that await around the area, and to grab a High Bridge Trail tee shirt!

A little hard to find, because let's face it, the main attraction is a 0.5 mile bridge that is part of a 30+ mile trail that has multiple access points. The LOVE sign can be found in downtown Farmville, which is a 4.4 mile (one way) walk to the bridge. Having already hiked that day, my group was looking for a slightly shorter route that still allowed us to experience the bridge, so we eventually headed to 555 River Road, Farmville and walked only a mile to the bridge (and then across) for a 3 mile round trip walk. What an amazing experience! We were fortunate enough to visit on a day with very blue skies and large fluffy white clouds, so the views were fantastic. If you look to the upstream side of the bridge, down to the remains of the old stone bridge, you can see a lot of old railroad spikes from past days. Very unique location.

High bridge trail!

Great place to go see! The trail is an old railway bridge that is literally above the trees!great place to ride bikes, walk, or horse back!

This trail is amazing! We rented cruiser bikes from The Outdoor Adventure Store in Farmville. The ride from the store to the bridge is 4.5 miles and the bridge is .5 miles long; making it a 10 mile round trip. The trail was a very easy ride (my 9-year old rode it with ease)...it's a straight shot and completely flat. Once atop the bridge, the views were spectacular! You can see miles of tree tops, mountains in the distance and the river underneath. If you're in the area, this is a must!!

This is a moderate level hike, 3.6 miles UP and Back. Elevation 1,135 ft. Some very steep inclines…read more So steep the path is switch back trails. Absolute great hike but challenging. Kid friendly, dogs on leash, and some paved walk ways BUT I don't think it would be for wheelchairs or strollers because it's such a steep incline. VIEWS-Waterfalls, forest, mountain, mushrooms, wildflowers, and berries. Such a busy trail that you really don't see to much wildlife or birds. Lots and Lots of stairs. This trail has been kept in great condition. There is a bit of scrambling and if there has been rain or snow it can be a bit slippery. Rocks and moss. So beautiful. This trail is part of George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. Absolutely beautiful at the top for me. It has an area that opens up at he top and benches so you can sit and admire the surrounding mountains. The first waterfall you come to is the easiest paved area to get to . Also the best waterfall view. It also has benches. This is from the parking lot and there is a fee. It is was 3 dollars so bring cash. There is no running water so bring your own water, Pack a smart backpack. Keep all areas clean and don't leave garbage behind. They have a bathroom area but with no running water. It is a dry toilet. Bring some hand sanitizer is my best advice.

This is a really good hike worth the incline on the way up to see the views! Definitely high…read moreincline on the way up, but there's benches and rocks along the way to take a break. The falls are really pretty, but be careful not to get too close. There's lots of signs to stay on the path which I recommend! It can get muddy after rain so wear good hiking boots for sure. It's dog friendly, I went when it wasn't too crowded and with the narrow pathways I had her off the leash but would put her back on the leash when I saw people ahead. About halfway up, there's an area of body of water that's safe for dogs to get water and to take a break at which is nice. It took about 3hrs total (up and down), 1.7 mi up and down.
