Parking is plentiful and easy to access. When you get to the settlement where the houses are, you encounter beautifully preserved homes that are set up as they would have been during the war. Unlike other battlefields that feel oppressive with death, Appomattox feels like hope for me. Maybe it's my imagination -especially because people died here too, but the way the two generals conducted themselves went a long way in restoring peace. It's a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.

We stopped at the High Bridge to take in the scene and also at Three Roads Brewery which is along the trail. The next day we stopped at The Virginia Tasting Cellar which is just off of the trail in Farmville. There are restrooms along the trail and plenty of shade for when you want to take a break. I'm originally from the area and whenever I visit home, I find myself running or walking with my family on the trail. In high school, we used to do cross country runs here! High Bridge Trail is a rail trail and the main portion is flat, which is perfect for gentle walking or fast running. I also recently learned that there are plenty of offshoots from the trail that have some elevation gains and make for nice hikes! While you're there, try and check out the Smyth Trail and the Camp Paradise trail. I really enjoyed seeing the old bridges and being near the river. Don't forget your bug spray! When I go, I usually park in two places: 1) public free parking in Farmville, and take the trail portion going back towards the river, or 2) park at the River Road parking lot, which is $2 self-pay/honor system, or free if you have the Virginia Adventure Pass. What I love about this trail is that there is something for everyone. I always see families with people of all ages (including babies in strollers), dog walkers, and people cycling! As the main trail is a bit gravelly, you will need a bigger tire for this trail. Side note: I would love to see is a small investment to make some of the trail wheelchair accessible. It's such a lovely park and would be wonderful if truly everybody could enjoy it. I will definitely be back to High Bridge and I really look forward to my next visit there.

I've passed through here before, but never spent more than an hour or so. The area is super…read morepeaceful, like no cell, no WiFi, nothing, so I booked some time after a really rough patch at work, to unwind, disconnect, and rejuvenate. Stayed in cabin 17, had a nice woodsy view from the deck. Looks like some lovely mountainside views from about 12-15 if that's your jam. If you've been to VA park cabins, they are the newer frame style, fully loaded with kitchen, fireplace, etc. The trails were well marked and well graded. The overlook for the Tye River lived up to the promise of best view in the park! Saw deer in ridiculous quantities, and other wildlife (sneaky slithery kinds) no bears, though. They are shy and will seek to avoid contact, but are around. The road to get out there is along the river and scenic, but be careful, deer pop out from anywhere!

The lake view cabins go very very quickly. Since we are all adult we can appreciate the quiet. Open plan with a lovely fireplace and outdoor fire pit. They provided a bundle of wood - but there is wood for sale at specific hours near the camp store. About the wood..... it's a cross between tree cut and saw mill. I paid $7.00 a bundle. Our cabin had a lovely wrap around porch/deck with both a front and back door. Great view as every room had a window including the bathroom. A slight "ick" factor is that the bed had crumbs. They offer everything you could want minus the linen. Side note I have allergies so be aware that a past guest may have had pets. We used sheets as couch covers. We are planning on staying there again. Standing shower, furnished kitchen. No WiFi. I would come back again but only strictly doing off season as it's much quieter.

The park's main parking lot is a…read morereasonably short walk over some pleasant abandoned railway right of way that leads to what is indeed a very impressive bridge. Converted for pedestrian use, this thing probably takes fifteen minutes just to walk across it at a reasonable pace, offering majestic views and a nice breeze when I visited. The site has some civil war history as well, as there apparently was a bridge here even that far back. The juxtaposition of industry on greenery is aesthetically intriguing, and there are plenty of side trails as well. To park at most of the park sites does require a fee or a park pass, which I would say is certainly worth it. The trail as separate from the bridge offers a lot of tree cover and is suitable for a walk even during a hot Virginia summer.
