The counselor is clearly a snob who's not interested in helping students, only crushing their dreams and telling them to aim lower. I listened to the entire counseling session, and the she was extremely rude and bitter and all around not helpful. Her whole agenda is to instill fear into applicants so they'll pay her more. The counselor was genuinely one of the worst people I've ever met and it's shocking to me that she can feel good about herself. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name drop, but she had a very pretentious name that started with a D. If this sounds like your counselor, RUN.

Robert is the best tutor I have ever worked with in any class, subject, or test preparation course…read more I improved my ACT score from 24 to 30 in just a few sessions with him. He was willing to work at my pace, and set the precedent that if I was willing to complete all of my work between sessions, he would get me exactly where I wanted to go. His understanding of the reading section particularly made a huge difference for me. Robert got me to think about how the ACT wanted me to think about the questions, and changed my mentality completely. I ended up at my dream school, and have continued to employ many of the strategies he taught me in college. P.S. He's also an amazing guy who can get along with anyone, which makes training for standardized exams much more enjoyable for all of his students.

I would highly recommend him to anyone that needs help with the college application essays!

My husband and I started tutoring our children in 2020 while they were going to school over zoom…read moreand it became evident to us that they needed a "teacher" rather than a "parent" to help them with their studies. As a parent I can attest to the fact that Sylvan has made it stress free for all of us. Sylvan assessed their scores and then set up a plan for tutoring. Both of my children are now ahead of their peers in Math and English nationally. Joy and Clarissa are dedicated, professional and caring teachers and I know that they have contributed more to my children's success than the schools they go to. I would highly recommend Sylvan at Westlake Village to parents looking for a study resource for their children especially in these times. My son who is 11 years old gets distracted easily and I told him I would not be renewing his Sylvan lessons. I was surprised when he told me he wished to continue with Ms Clarissa because "she helped him understand concepts in Math that he had just started learning at school". Now they use Sylvan as a study resource to understand concepts, methodologies and improve writing skills.

The teachers at Sylvan were wonderful, and this review is not a reflection of them. They genuinely…read morecared about our child and did a great job during the sessions. Unfortunately, the business practices completely overshadowed that positive experience. Scheduling was difficult from the start, with very limited availability for makeup sessions. When our credit card unexpectedly declined, Sylvan refused to release our child until we provided a new credit card on the spot. As a parent, that felt incredibly uncomfortable and inappropriate. The biggest issue came when we tried to reduce the number of sessions due to our family's summer travel schedule. We were given three different processes we supposedly needed to follow, which delayed everything by nearly two weeks. After following their instructions, we were then told we could only make the change if we agreed to pay a higher rate. It felt like every step was designed to prevent us from adjusting our plan rather than working with us. It's disappointing because the instructors are excellent, but the corporate policies and billing practices felt more focused on locking families into contracts than supporting children's learning. I've dealt with restrictive gym memberships that were easier to navigate than this. If you're considering Sylvan, I would strongly encourage you to read the enrollment agreement carefully and ask detailed questions about scheduling, billing, cancellations, and program changes before signing. The educational staff deserve praise, but the administrative experience left us feeling trapped rather than supported.

She's very proffesional, knowledgeable, helpful, nice, and easy to relate to. She can come to your house too which was nice ! She was so easy to get appts with, something that I found difficult to do with the local tutors in the area. I was on my wits end when I made a last call to her, sure that she would be unavailable or unreachable by phone like all the other tutors I had called that day. Luckily, she was available short notice and I made two tutoring appointments with her for a Statistics final and instantly felt better after each. She showed me how to input information in my graphing calculator to figure out problems and explained the material that confused me. She even gave me a delicious, homemade chocolate chip cookie on our last apt. Give her a call, you won't regret it!

Megan has been working with our HS Junior in both Algebra II and Chemistry. Without her, my…read moredaughter has said she would be failing Chemistry for sure. Megan takes the time to make sure my daughter really understands the concepts and can work out problems. She is always on time, and a pleasure to have around the house. She has taken the initiative to create study groups for my daughter with others in the same class needing the same levels of support. I love that! Besides being a great tutor, Megan is fair and honest. Several years ago I had her come to evaluate our daughter for tutoring on another subject. After spending an hour with our daughter, Megan said she could not see a reason for tutoring, just needed to focus more...show some gumption. At the time, that ended up being all she needed. Other tutors might have taken advantage of the situation and say tutoring was needed...feeding on vulnerability, but not Megan.

Which,…read moreobviously this place is awesome, because for elementary kids to be jazzed about doing more Math, it has to be something special! The environment is so friendly, supportive & positive! I gotta give credit to Bastian! He's fantastic, welcoming & connects with these students. Prior to choosing Mathnasium I looked into Kumon as well and had my kids assessed there too. I can say that while Kumon was cheaper, the assessment of my kids was majorly underwhelming. I was told how extremely behind they were, which I knew was not true. It made my kids feel bad. Kumon also required pages and pages of homework. My kids felt the place was creepy. Not for us! Mathnasium sold me on the approach of targeting areas and working on a well rounded picture, while allowing a little time at the end for kids to show their current homework & make sure they're on the right track! I love receiving emails when my kids have completed mastery checks on skills & when they level up! My kids also love getting "stars" and completing "cards" to receive rewards, from chapstick to Disney tickets (depending on how much they save up for). The fun environment is great!
