Three months ago, I was told to find a place for my niece to sign up for an SAT bootcamp. For years I had heard of students being driven in droves to Chinatown and Koreatown for this purpose. I looked up the internet and came across Elite. I sat and sat on it, not being too sure whether I had found the right place. Then someone mentioned The Jeng Academic Center. I decided straight away to find out more and called the Director, Dr. De Yin Jeng himself. After speaking to him for about 5 minutes, I got a good feeling about this man. We agreed to meet with my niece as well her siblings. In the meantime I read up all I could find about this learning center. The more I read the more I was drawn.
We were late in signing up and to make up for it, Dr. Jeng kindly set aside some time to meet with all of us one afternoon. I saw the facilities. The classrooms were well set up and age appropriate. The chairs and desks are of good quality, the rooms properly lit and most of all, everything was so clean and spacious. Extremely conducive to learning.
Halfway through the meeting I was so impressed that we considered immediately to sign up the younger sister who is 13 years old. One week has gone by and the young girl has expressed sadness about next week being her last week. We are speaking of a girl who only wants to play and have fun. She rarely talks about what happens in school at Sequioa in Newbury Park. With the JAC, she was all chatty and excited, regaling her days with much enthusiasm. Which tells me that we have found the right learning environment for a tough nut to crack. I was quite impressed with how she managed to memorize a rather complicated Shakespeare poem! Yesterday I asked what she had to do for next week. An Emily Dickenson poem and she's almost got it down pat! and this is not even due until the 26th of June.
In the meantime, the older sister is signed up for the SAT bootcamp. Dr. Jeng is a no nonsense kind of educator who is firm but very kind and in all the emails to his students, he constantly shares his brilliant philosophy on life and the importance of a great education. I am particularly impressed with his excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written. Dr. Jeng has created the most wonderful programs for his students, his end goal being to instill in his students the love of learning and being productive and interesting humans. Dr. Jeng started off 16 years ago by helping his young son with Math as he did not care for the way his son was taught Math. Ever since then he has not stopped teaching students and has changed the lives of many.
I am blown away by his pilosophy for everything that he utters makes a lot of sense. I told my nieces had the JAC been in existence which my two children were growing up, I would have signed them up for every single program offered. It will be money well spent and the return would have been immeasurable.
Dr. Jeng is rather well educated and chooses not to dwell on his many qualifications but instead focus on the task at hand, which is the well-being of his students. He handles the students with much aplomb. His kind approach compels one to do the work assigned and he remains diligent in the follow through.
