I took a week off work and did the accelerated program. Some guys thought I was nuts, a 40 hour course in a week, but I already work a 40 hour a week job so it didn't seem like a big deal. I understand if you have time and are not currently employed the two week class may be easier or better, but I think the way I did it was good . The web site needs work. it is really rough, leaves lots of questions unanswered. But, I was able to get some decent response from mails and I had enough to move forward. I admit the program is a little wacky. You check I and get your book and there is a number of chapters, but you are not instructed in the order the book goes thru. Its odd, but they have a system and it works. So basically if you go to class all week but miss one, you go back the following week and make up the lesson the day you missed. They are good about being flexible with you, but there are some things that are not. They will arrive at exactly class time, so don't worry if you think no one is coming, they will be there, just not early. The school is open for you to practice at any time which is nice, cause there is no where else your going to be able to practice. The bottles, could be better marked. some are so old they put label's on them and I like color that I can refer to a visual instead of having to try and read the bottle to inquire out what it is. Testing is on Fridays, but they will work with you if that's an issue. There is two parts to the exam to pass. They both are a little tough. 90% in 166 answer test is a little high. I took it after the one week and got a 77%, but remember I did class in one week and had very little study time. I had like 3 days to get 200 recipes in my pea brain and honestly, the 1/2 oz and 1 oz intricacy's and the zombies killed me at first, but the second time was the charm, I ended up with a 99%and honestly, if they offer you cards to buy, do it. they flashcards are helpful although you can go onto Cram or Quizlet and print ones for yourself. Beware there have been slight changes to some recipes and like I said the test is pretty strict, so even if you know a different variation of the recipe, learn theirs and use yours later. The speed test is crazy and unnecessary. I understand the need for speed. But i am an older lady, not that old but when the majority of the students and teachers are in their 20's you feel old. I will never work in a bar that would rather I pour quickly over taking time to craft a cocktail that will be better. But again...do what they want to get the diploma. OK, So I didn't get all the rues the first time around so I failed miserable. I also live too far to come in and practice. By the way, you don't need to practice, you need to know the recipes. After the second try and 12 drinks in 6 1/2 minuets, I learned I didn't need to use my shaker and or do a roll and put for the ricks class or collins glass drinks So after a second fail, I passed shaving a minute off my time and ended up making 12 horrible drinks in 5 1/2 minutes. Whatever, I passed and I got the paper saying it. My friends teased me, why did I want the paper, just go out there and get a job, right? Well no...with ability to get their recruitment lists on Tuesdays and Wednesday's between 3 and 7 pm. The first list I got was a shock. A lot of great spots I know of by my house. So I went ahead and got started with applying. This was Tuesday. And On Friday out of curiosity I went to one of the bars listed and realized it was my lucky day. They were having a open call for applications ad doing interviews on the spot. I didn't think id have a chance, it is a high end spot in fashion island. after 2 hours of interviewing and mostly waiting, I landed a job and start in two weeks. My biggest thanks got to the two ladies that encouraged me the most...Hannah and Kendra. your both a assets to the company and i'm lucky to have been learning form you both. After many years of being a customer in lots and lots of bars and some encouragement from my friends, I recently decided to dive in and take a shot at being on the business side of the saloon and become a certified bartender. I researched many other schools in the area. After a few inquiries and a couple of phone calls to multiple places, I decided to enroll at the Orange Bartending School. Here is a breakdown of my experience at the school - take it for what it is worth. The Search: After finding the school's website online and reading all the information, I still had a few questions about the process (I always have questions - SOL 186,282 mi/sec). I submitted the online form for someone to contact me, and Coty promptly did - on a Sunday no less, when they were not even open! #dedicated The Staff: The entire staff is very knowledgeable about everything they teach. At the time I attended, there were two main instructors and a 'floater'. They are all funny, have great personalities, and are just excellent people to be around. Coty is very thorough and covers all the lessons down to every detail including where the alcohol is from, what it tastes like, what it is made from, substitutes for it, etc. Equally detail-oriented is Omar. He is quite meticulous when it comes to pour ratios (counts) and garnishes, and will keep you on your toes when it comes down to "test time". Kevin is quite boisterous and has an incredibly sharp wit - he runs the Riverside school, and he knows his drinks! (beware his final pour-test) The Facility: As you walk in the school, it looks like an exceedingly well-stocked bar. While I was there, at least 2 people came in came in off the sidewalk and did not know it was not a real bar. We sent them to Jimmy Bones next door. The Bar: There are 6 pour stations that are completely ready to go. At first, the 90 or so bottles of "alcohol" (colored water) are a little daunting, but in time and after some practice (ok, a lot of practice), you will come to know each of them very well. Each station has its own 10-bottle well rack, a juice station rack, a jockey box for ice, and a sink setup. The countertop has pour mats, a garnish station, strainers, spoons, straws, and coasters - pretty much everything you would see at a "real" bar. You might even find a bar rag if you look hard enough. The Atmosphere: The instructors are very laid back, and there is no pressure to perform at any time. There was always playful banter among the students and instructors, and we all shared tips and tricks on how to get things done more efficiently for the fast-paced testing sessions. There are colored ceiling lights that they turn on every once in a while to give you the dance club vibe. The music is always on so the time passes more quickly. The Book: After enrollment you will get a 68 page booklet with everything you need for the class. It has all the info for the verbal and written tests you will take, and the recipes for all the drinks you will be making. It is a little intimidating, but you WILL get through it. All the pour tests are listed in the back so you will know exactly what you will be making, and in what order. The last test is 12 randomly selected drinks from the entire book. The Cards: Make them. They are invaluable for testing, and for giving yourself pop-quizzes while you are there. After each test I would mix up all the cards I already knew and would test myself in my down time. You will have a big stack at the end, and will know all of them. The Hours: When the school is open, you can come and go as you please. You sign-in and sign-out to record your hours. They are not babysitters there. They take a 1-hour lunch break in the middle. Other Stuff: Once all your "testing" is completed, they train you with their in-house POS system to learn the basics of how to use one. You also review some beer training videos on properly pouring beer, how to clean a system, as well as some other videos. A separate class for TIPS / ServSafe was also included in the course. You will need this particular certification to work events. After recently graduating (March 2017), I could not be any more pleased with my decision to attend this school. It was a TON of fun, and I made some AWESOME FRIENDS. The job placement absolutely worked for me. I graduated on a Wednesday, and by Saturday I was bartending at an event, and have the opportunity for even more events in the future. How frickin' cool is that?! I highly recommend it to anyone looking to become a new bartender, or just to make a little extra cash on the weekends working a gig. Yes I know you can be a bartender without going to a bartending school. I just did not want to have to climb the ranks from hostess to bartender. Plus I just thought it would be fun to take a class. When I called they were having an anniversary special for $400, the normal price is $800. I know this tends to be a marketing gimmick so just for fun I called after the "promotion" ended and they were still offering it for $400, so no need to rush out and sign up. This is suppose to cover all you class fees, but on the first day of class they tell you you should buy flash cards for $20. It is not required but they HIGHLY recommend it. (Lame, they didn't say anything about this over the phone) One really cool thing is that at any time you can come back to the school for a refresher for free. This place is also the only accredited bartending school in OC, which means they are a real school. They seem to be pretty flexible with the schedule if you make arrangements with them. The typical class schedule is every weekday (M-F) for 2 weeks for a total of 40 hrs. They offer classes in the morning, afternoon or evenings so almost everyone can fit it in. I took the evening class with Alex so I can't say how the day teacher is. I have to say Alex is really funny, but I can imagine he offends some people. (Half the time he is ragging on Riverside people) He gave you tips on how to memorize drinks which really helped (After one day I already had some drink recipes memorized) read more

I wish I could give zero stars to this place because the piss poor management/staff that they have. I wanted to join this class so that I could gain beginner/intermediate knowledge about bartending without actually being a bartender. My first day was really awkward but I figured it can only go up, not all the way down. We started at about 7:15PM, which gave us 2 hours and 45 minutes to learn. Sure, that means a shorter class and less time to pay attention - but being told by instructor George that there is a timed final and written exam after TWO weeks made me a bit nervous knowing how much time we were wasting. After forgiving the mistakes of the first day like dirty jokes from our instructor, a late start and finding out that they do not clean the water gun, nor wipe down or sanitize the cups or bar at all, I gave the rest of the week a shot. Everyday was the same. We didn't start until 7:15/7:30PM. It had the smell of mold behind the bar. There was visable mold where the cups were put. George was so disgusting and hard to understand. There was no way I was going to pass after two weeks. I came in for the second week. No way! We started at 7:30. And this time George was so disrespectful that I had absolutely enough. He would say digs under his breath to other students about a few of the students. He ignored a certain group during "bar time" and was not helpful at all. There is no way that this class is worth any money let alone $375. After speaking with the owner, Jeff. I explained that I've given this class over a week to prove it worthy and it's dissappointed in a handful of ways. His response was that he did not have any other instructors and he would not refund any money. BBB here I come. read more

The placement director, Hannah, actually drives to different job leads to talk to potential employers. In addition to Mike, Hannah is extremely enthusiastic and helpful. I finished last year and I'm now working at the Hilton. Don't expect to be a complete bartender by the end of the program-this is basically a crash course into bartending. It's impossible to be fully ready for a bartending job just after two weeks, but O.C. NBS does a better job than other schools. I found out that it was just the beginning after I finished the 2 week course. The course set me off in a positive start and the school became a great resource for support, practice, and knowledge. End of review... here are some tips that may prove useful when you do the course. Temper your expectations and learn as much as you can by asking questions outside of class. Read up on different drink trends, write down new ones you learned in some kind of file system such as the tried and true index cards, and be on the look out for any new drink trends-browse different websites (especially the "foodie" blogs). I've been more involved with craft drinks using fresh ingredients and I've used new possible flavor combinations like grapefruit/jalepeno mojitos. Remember to improve is to emulate people better than you and then carve out your own path with that knowledge. I take what I learn in craft drinks from websites/restaurants/other bartenders and I also talk to liquor vendors to find out what is popular or the newest drinks that are coming out. One way to test out new drinks w/out taking a huge hit in the wallet is to invite some friends over and have each one bring an ingredient. I've done these "tastings" to great success and the feedback to modify recipes is invaluable as opposed to losing real customers due to a horrible Frankenstein drink that sounded good on paper. Remember to sometimes review the new drinks you have learned ever few weeks or so and use the school to practice your pours! Get comfortable working with the bottles and improve your short term memory by having someone tell you drink orders (I'm sure someone at the school can help you) or laying random recipe index cards out (like 3 at a time) and preparing the drinks without having to look at each one again. A word of advice, event bartending is nothing like working at a full bar. Event bartending is way more relaxed and there is much less multi-tasking. There is a reason why full bars don't care about your event bartending experience-it's just a different world. In the meantime work on your speed at making drinks and your memory has to be razor sharp. read more

National came recommended by a former student and he's a damn good bartender at that! You can choose to complete in one or two weeks. I took the night class that ended up taking 4 weeks. If you get Alex, he's a funny guy with a refreshing prespective. If you ask me he should be elected president! Knowing what I know now I cannot drink out of the well. 5 stars go to N.B.S.! I highly recommend anyone looking to educated themselves in mixology or who wants to become a bar tender to take this class. JAMES & HANNAH are excellent instructors and just all around good people! I had a lot of fun taking this class and learned so much! Not only does this course teach you 300+ drinks but also teaches you bar do's and don'ts. Such as how to cut someone off, break up fights and when & how to up sell drinks and much more! Honestly it is A LOT of information but if you study as you go it's not completely overwhelming. So down to the basics when you initially walk in it can be a little confusing because the school is set up as a bar for obvious reasons, so just walk to the desk or one of the offices in back to enroll or you can do it online! Punctuality is not a huge deal here if you are a little late don't stress out an drive like a maniac just get there, come in quietly and get in tune with the rest of the class. I see there are previous posts from others complaining about job placement. Why don't y'all get off yelp an go look! Maybe that's part of the reason you aren't finding a job. Just graduated from here bout two weeks ago. I took the morning class for two weeks and it was one of the most fun classes I've taken. You learn a lot different recipes from shooters, tropical drinks, to martinis. The teachers give you study tools to remember all the recipes. They teach you how to speed pour which can be tricky at first. They teach you the history of the different alcohols and now I even have some fun facts to share! The teachers are very nice and hilarious, the music can get a bit repetitive though haha mainly when you hear uptown funk like 3 times a class period. Wednesday's are really fun, you'll have to sign up to figure out why. After you graduate they point you in the right direction to finding jobs and applying. Most people would walk by and see just see a bar on the outside.(There were even folks who walked in and asked for a drink a couple of times). Inside, however, was an experience I will not forget. As you walk in you are immersed in neon signs and flags of many different brews and spirits that fill the room from top to bottom. The full bar stations packed with almost every kind of bottle you can think of. You could replace the water-colored bottles with the real stuff, throw some cash registers, and you have your typical bar setting. From the lessons to the instructors, I could not have ask for a better learning experience. Everything is hands on. There are workbooks, but 98% of the curriculum can be aced by just practicing practicing practicing. You have your lessons and activities such as mock club scenes, busy bar nights, and speed tests. Everything that you will experience during 'a night behind the bar' can be found here. Even down to the clean up. The instructors are phenomenal. Some even bring soul to the table. They want you to succeed and get behind a bar asap. If you're uncomfortable with profane languages and sexual jokes, I advise to throw on some thick skin. They are projecting a REAL BAR atmosphere. Which is what I loved most about the class. If you need help. They are there for you 100%. I picked all of their brains for tips and tricks every chance I got. I've recently graduated from NBS and have an on-call gig down Newport Beach. I came here a complete novice, and with the help of Hannah and James, I am confident on my ability to mix drinks, and upsell drinks. The job placement offered gets a lot of flacks, but in reality, this school is to show you how to bartend, not to hand you a job. Just like any school or vocational places, you're here to learn the skills needed to succeed in this trade. This place is not here to teach you the drive to reach that success. If you want to get the job, dress for success and sell yourself as an asset to the establishment. Bars won't hire no experience bartenders, but if you sell them the ability to make them money, they will take a chance with you since you're new and they can mold you to how they want you to bartend. If you are looking to learn or get into the bartending business this is a great place to start. I took their coarse and they went the extra mile to make me feel comfortable and ready to explore the field on my own. Of course it's on you have to take it upon yourself to study but the staff does a great job of keeping you motivated as try are working bartenders themselves.
