    Cheeto, the corn snake

Just got back from OBX Lizard Land and let me tell you--it was *sssensational*! We had the pleasure of meeting Cheeto, the corn snake, who was surprisingly chill for a guy named after a crunchy snack. Holding Cheeto was like holding a friendly, scaly noodle that didn't seem the least bit interested in turning us into lunch. The zoo itself is a reptile lover's paradise--full of critters that will make you rethink that whole "warm-blooded animals are better" thing. If you've ever wanted to say you held a snake without it ending in a trip to the ER, this is the place to do it! Highly recommend slithering on over for a visit.

We had an awesome experience at Outer-banks Lizard Land! We just moved to Norfolk, and we wanted to drive down to the OBX for a day to check out the beaches and get some BBQ. When we saw this place on yelp we thought it would be a fun pit stop for our toddler. It's right on the main road, and the exterior can be deceiving, especially during off-season. When we first arrived we thought 'is this it?'....there is signage, but it looks like a house, and you might be tempted to assume it's some amateur operation and keep driving...but don't! You won't regret stopping in to check this place out. We stopped on an early Spring Saturday afternoon, and spent roughly an hour here. The exhibit takes up most of the first floor, with multiple rooms and at least dozens of impressive animals. This place is clean, secure, and clearly a labor of love. There is a lot of custom building and attention to detail, and the owner (Paul) was happy to interact with us but also let us explore the space independently. He first brought out a very tame but larger lizard (Miss Daisy) for our 2 year old to pet, however she was too cautious to touch...so he later brought out a smaller but more active gecko, which she was more excited about, and able to pet, but not willing to hold (so just mom and dad did!). He was happy to feed the dart frogs while we were there so we could view them in a more active state (they were so vibrant and beautiful!). Before we left Paul even took out a giant hissing cockroach for us to hold (creepy but cool!). There are so many lizards and snakes, and even a few frogs and tarantulas, etc to see here, and I was surprised that most if not all of the creatures were alert and active during our visit. Paul and his wife have just poured their love for reptiles into this place, and everywhere you look there are interesting curio items. Once we were done with the exhibit, Paul came outside with us and grabbed the chicken-feed so our toddler could feed the chickens, which was probably the highlight of her weekend! With our 2yr old and 11month old being free, we paid just $5/adult to experience Lizard Land, and it was well worth it. We will definitely be back!

This place is amazing!! Hidden gem! Only $5 and owner/workers is/are super friendly! Let the kids hold snakes and show them around!

When you think, hey I need a drink, a water fountain or food station happens to be close by. The locations of park benches, bathrooms, etc. appear to be well planned. The featured events are always changing, they usually have a different theme each time we go so we aren't bored coming back every month. The park is well maintained, cleaned, and park personnel always seem to be close by if you need them. The animals are active and look healthy so the children love visiting them. The monkeys are always a hoot. They are natural performers. The petting zoo for children is full of "cute animals" for the young ones. I love the shady places, smiles! Great well maintened, well lighted parking lot with free parking near the entrance. We all had a great time. The admission price is still reasonable.

There were many children, which looked like they were on a school trip. Before coming, I searched the zoo's website and found out they had admission discounts for whomever had Medicaid. It stated that admission price was $7. Of course, they had to ID you to see if your name matched the card. To my surprise, admission was just $4.95, which was a steal. I brought in food and water for my son and I, as most people did. First stop was the Fountain Plaza, where I had to figure out which way I wanted to maneuver. I went left to Asia and Africa trails, as my son wanted to view tigers, lions, giraffes, and monkeys. Each exhibit had 1 or 2 animals. Very bare. The monkeys had 3 the most. Not too many animals were active, which is understandable because this is their normal wild habitat. I was expecting to see my favorite animal, the elephant. Apparently, they are no longer there, as well as gorillas. I enjoyed the giraffes, rhinos, and zebras in Africa. They had the most energy. The cheetah and lion were off the exhibit that day. Following those trails, my son wanted to ride on the train. It is $3/rider. They have a strict policy of having all hands and feet at all times during the ride. This all took 2hrs. I didn't bother checking the other side of the park because it was starting to drizzle. This zoo was just ok to do something with your kids so that they can get acquainted with various animals from other parts of the world or just a date. I've been to better zoos, it was just so bare. Be prepared for lots of walking, so bring water.

Animals should be treated with respect - not like dolls. It may not harm them however it teaches the kids they're allowed do this with animals and the animals aren't supposed to mind it. So what if the kids try to do this to theirs or someone's dog or cat and they get bit or scratched!?? Who is going to be punished? More than likely the animal. Also... these animals are NOT supervised as I watched kids (brats is more like it) poke the poor rabbit in the eyes then poke at the chickens while the parents did absolutely nothing but smile as though it's how these animals are supposed to be treated. The rabbit was a nervous wreck (shaking) and I felt so bad for it. The ducks were left in the blazing sun (sitting in their drinking water trying to remain cool). Finally after a couple hours of roasting, the man moved the pen in the shade. And poor Moonpie, the goat, remained curled up on the ground tied to a post and appeared very unhappy, perhaps even ill. Would not even lift her head to look around. She shouldn't have been out there not feeling her best for socializing and then forced to bear the pokes and kicks by unruly kids. I truly enjoy petting zoos however they must supervise the animals and make sure they are treated with respect. If there is not enough of them to watch all the animals then provide more people or bring less animals. This made my day at this even an unpleasant one, so we left.

He was so helpful and also provided bags of feed to our children while we walked around. While walking around, we were able to see many animals . One of our favorite areas was the garden area. Our children really enjoyed watching and looking at some of the items they were growing, whether it was produce or flowers. Another area we enjoyed was the playground . Our children in our classroom are older, but they were able to enjoy the playground as well. There was plenty of seating around the playground so you could sit and watch the children. The bathrooms were pretty clean for the type of area we were at . All of the staff that we came in contact with were fantastic. There was a lot of hard-working staff members there whether they were feeding animals or watering or attending to ground crew chores. The parking lot is pretty large. It's spacious and exciting, and best of all, the swings are inclusive and accessible for children with disabilities, which makes this space truly welcoming for everyone. In addition to all the fun, there are friendly farm animals to visit and interact with, which is always a hit with little ones.
