Hundreds of these geese, named for their white plumage, have landed in North Carolina. The snow goose is mostly covered in white feathers, but has black wing tips. They are typically native to Greenland, Canada, Alaska and the northeastern tip of Siberia. While seemingly rare to most people, there's another type of goose that's far more rare to spot along the Atlantic Coast that has also arrived- the Blue Ross Goose. Its color mutation is controlled by a single gene. This bird was the inspiration for cartoonist J.N. Darling to create the symbol of the the National Wildlife Refuge System. Populations of blue geese are found mostly in central North America and very rarely come to the east coast. Snow Geese fly to the Arctic and subarctic zone of North America, as well as marginal areas of neighboring Russia and Greenland to breed each year. They time their arrival to coincide with the melting snow and thawing ice. The tundra of the far north provides rich foraging grounds and a relatively safe place for these birds to raise their family. At such high latitudes however the summer is short-lived, and the birds must head south because they cannot survive the coming harsh winter. Once breeding is complete, the birds molt and then begin a long migration. The timing of migration is highly dependent on weather conditions, but normally begins shortly after the first snow begins in mid August and is usually completed by December. The migration is a pretty drawn out affair that lasts 3 or 4 months, making long stopovers at regularly used staging grounds to refuel for the next leg. They will begin their northward spring migration as early as February from the south and arrive at their breeding grounds by the end of May. Geese form lifelong pairs on their second northward spring migration. They will mate for life and return to the same nest site year after year.

Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge is just across the Virginia/North Carolina border (through Pungo and Princess Anne Road) and takes up most of Knott's Island. There are two primary entrances and during COVID the facilities are closed but you can still adventure, hike, fish, ride bikes, bird and wildlife watch, and enjoy! Most of this refuge is made up of marsh land and I rode the loop from the end of the entrance road parking lot fully around earlier today which was around 5.5 miles total and it was beautiful. I saw huge cattails, tons of white baby's breath flowers along the trail, turtles, birds, fish, and white and blue herons! No snakes surprisingly. There is no shade on the trail so come prepared with tons of water and hats and sunscreen. Water and marsh on both sides and beautiful, beautiful, scenery is what you will be treated to here. It is a must see. My all-time favorite so far this summer!

There are also poop bags provided by the city so if you bring your furry friend please pick up after them. Just to the side of the parking lot there is a "sandy beach" area where you could skip stone or cast a line. On the opposite side of the parking lot there is a small pond that has 2 picnic tables. Additionally about 100 ft from the entrance there is a dock with built in benches where you could just relax and enjoy the view.

I bought a $50 pass for the week (passes are limited) to access and park on this beach to enjoy the seclusion and wild horses. You have to keep at least 50 feet away from the horses and are not allowed to feed them. We drove around for a bit, admiring the wild horses and the beautiful homes in the area and then we set up our beach gear to enjoy the beautiful day. We brought a picnic lunch and had a great time. This is by far my favorite beach in NC.

The pleasure boaters at Bob's tend to make that location less than ideal (or pleasurable) for fishers due to their extreme need for speed whereas, here at Halls Creek, you don't see as many on the river so fishing is more peaceful and serene. The ramp is smooth and even (go to both and you'll see what I mean) and even though there is only one dock here at HC, it is significantly safer and sturdier than what you'll find at Bob's. Granted, Bob's is hindered by the city of Chesapeake zoning so that could have something to do with it. For the last 5 years or so we have done our fishing solely here at HC. Not only do I enjoy the fishing here, I also enjoy bird watching and nature viewing. Some days I don't even fish. All in all, it's worth the 40 minutes it takes us to get here to fish.

Access is from boat, bike, or hike. NO CARS! If you do drive parking is at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. There is a fee to enter. The Visitors Center will provide park rules which are somewhat lengthy. Park rangers are on hand. Allow a four mile hike from Back Bay. All trash must be taken out by visitors, no trash cans are on grounds. They do allow overnight camping on the beach. False Cape is the most pristine beach in all of Virginia and Fall is the ideal time to visit with cooler temps. This marina is fantastic. We came here to seek shelter from a very bad storm with winds (23/24…read moremiles an hour, gusts 45 miles an hour) coming from the west and the south. After carefully looking at different options, we chose this place, not too far from Elizabeth Town NC. We hardly noticed the storm. It is very well protected. There is a laundry room, showers, a gigantic dollar store and even a hair dresser nearby. The marina itself also has a little grocery store. The people are extremely friendly and we highly recommend this place. Larry - the owner - is a local celebrity, very helpful and is the nicest guy you'll ever meet.

My son's first time on a horse was there. Lunch for a friend's birthday on the little island was there and any time I want to feel close to earth and nature I ask the owner Chris if I can stop by. It is truly beautiful. The horses just add a little magical touch to the farm. It is also the perfect place for a wedding. If I were getting married it would be here at Fair Winds Farm. There is an amazing photographer Betty Bryant who can capture people and animals beautifully. As I said it's one of my favorite places in the area.

They had a real great time and had the opportunity to help prepare / groom the horses before the ride. We spent just a little over two hours and enjoyed every minute of it my daughter who is six is still talking about it. Outstanding job to the staff thank you very much.
