I have visited Chick's beach several times. It is definitely ranked number 1 in the beaches we visit. I love how the tide is lower around here, at least on our visits they are. The children love to play right on the shoreline and with low tide we get to sit pretty close as well. It is never too crazy packed. We always find parking, and a great spot close to the path to exit. Beach has always been kept clean each visit we make. This past visit we even got a visit from the local police just making sure the area is safe and clean for all the patrons. They stuck around and spoke to a few people laughing and shaking hands. Parking is found all along the surrounding streets. Sometimes we have to circle a few times but we always manage to land a spot. I would definitely recommend making a trip to this beach if you haven't already. read more

When sun shines, you can find us here! I think Chicks Beach is the best beach in the area. The beach is very nice, the water is more calm and less cold because of the geography. The environment is super nice and calm, plenty of families, friends and couples enjoying the beach. Dogs schedule is respected. There are any buildings, it is all sand and houses, what I think it makes it less touristic and cozy. It is easy to find a parking spot next to the beach without paying. Pro: good sandbar, great place for dog to go swimming, Con: parking space, dog time zone . If you are looking for a dog friendly beach then chic beach is the place to go. This beach has a big sand bar where you and your dog can walk 20-30 ft from the shoreline and the water would only reach to your knees at best. If your dog like meeting new dog then this beach is great to meet new friends. This place does not offer a lot of public parking since it is located in a residential neighborhood. We drove around 10 minute looking for a parking space. If you are not careful you could get a ticket or worse get your car towed. We park on the side street near a McDonald and hope we wouldn't get a ticket when we came back to the car. There is a time 6am -10 am for dog on the beach. read more

I lived on this beach right by the Lesner bridge for awhile and really loved it! My kids loved the fact that the water is much calmer here compared to the water near the boardwalk area. Our location was never overly crowded because it was for residents living in that location. There is no public parking unless you can find a spot on the street, but that's a rare thing to find. The dolphins were out playing here quite often. There were people who enjoyed fishing here as well. I enjoy big waves sometimes but I prefer this location more. read more

I love how this beach is never over crowded like the oceanfront. There is always a place to sit and it isn't ridiculously loud. The waves aren't as big as the ocean front so it is good for younger kids too. You can bring kayaks, floats, or ocean toys. Warning: when it is warm there is a TON of sea weed. Also: be careful parking! Make sure you aren't in a spot where you will get ticketed or towed! That can put a damper on a fun beach day. read more

Why would a resident of Chick's Beach not want to promote it on Yelp, or other social forums? Well it becomes obvious once you have tourist invading your beach, front yard and disrespecting your neighborhood with constant litter, noise and letting dogs run off leash. Is this one of Hampton Roads best kept secrets. YES without a doubt it is. But I hope no one will be disappointed that this review will not divulge local parking spots. The close knit swath of homes and beach affectionately known as Chick's Beach is strong in community, with a well organized civic league working to both promote the beach, at the same time actively protecting it. The league also works to enforce environmental and zoning codes. As well, residents work closely with law enforcement and have neighborhood watch zones. Rarely are there issues of any type involving a serious crime. This may be the sleepiest two mile run in Virginia Beach . Now you begin to understand why it's so desirable and cloaked in secrecy. In the early 90's most residents of this very quiet conservative area wanted nothing to do with the name Chic's, or Chick's Beach believing it was wrong to rename this historic area. However, the name caught on so much that it was later endorsed and became a major marketing tool for the area with branding of CXB on shirts, hats, magnets and alike. Chicks Beach is tiny, running just two miles along the shoreline. It stretches from the Lynnhaven Inlet to just west of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, or basically East of the amphibious base Little Creek. The homes in this area are eclectic to say the least. Old beautiful beach cottages along with newer larges homes and condos and even duplex's make up this geography. It is a melting pot that residents embrace. The name Chic's originated from longtime hot dog stand owner Chic Ledington who owned his small beach side stand where the current Alexander's on the Bay now stands. At this point there is no business open at this location since earlier this month. There are few business's that operate in Chick's Beach proper which I consider off of Lookout Rd. HK on the Bay and Green Parrot Grille are two restaurant/bars that are currently operational. A small market is also on the main drag and is mainly used by tourist, or those hard up enough to not travel a small distance to a nearby full service grocery. Some fun history about the area: Blackbeard and his crew did frequent the current geography known as Chick's Beach in a period around 1716. It depends on who you ask where the name Lookout Rd. derived it's orgin. This small road runs right down the middle of East Chicks Beach. Research has found the pirate and his men enjoyed houses of ill repute to the North giving it the name Pleasure House(s), which is present day Pleasure House Rd in Chick's Beach/Bayside. The name lookout legend has it came from Blackbeard literally not wanting to get caught with his pants down. He positioned his men on "LOOKOUT" to warn him of ships preparing to attack. Current Bay Lake Pines neighborhood dedicated this pirate heritage by naming their roads in theme. Such as Black Beard, Treasure Island and Long John Silver. Chick's Beach is beautiful, the sunsets spectacular and the views are one of a kind. This is a family beach, so keep this in mind when visiting. Love Chick's beach!! We always find free parking right next to the entrance to the beach. Sometimes we come early in the morning but today we came around 3pm and the parking was still really easy to find. The beach is usually not very crowded but given everyone has been cooped up for 2 months, it's a bit more packed now! Still every practiced social distancing and gave others their space on the sand and in the water. Lynnhaven Fish House used to be right by the beach but has since closed. There's signs in their parking lot saying it's not for beach parking but I don't know how much that's enforced. I've never tried parking in there but I've also never seen a tow truck around there. Sometimes the kids find tiny crabs in the water but nothing dangerous or scary. The sand has no garbage or debris and trash cans are easily accessible. Great destination with the fam! read more

The surf is lower and good for kayaking and paddle boards. The downside is parking in some areas can be a challenge. The southern end is real Lynnhaven Beach. Chicks Beach is a nice family friendly beach to go to. It's away from the mass of tourists and a nice beach overall. The beach is clean overall and the water is pristine. The only problem is that the waves are nonexistent. Do NOT go here to surf under any circumstances. I know dogs aren't allowed at certain times, I always just bring him. Spent the day at the beach near the Lesner bridge. Love watching the small boats come and go out of the inlet. The water is not ever rough and the breeze is always blowing along the water.. The recent upgrades to the bridge has made this beach area even better than before. This is a favorite for locals and tourist alike... Recommend getting there early because parking is limited. Worth the $3 to park.. Bathrooms are available near the boat ramp. read more

Chicks Beach has been a stomping ground since moving here over 25 years ago. I feel fortunate to live within walking distance this Chesapeake Bay beach. It is a low key, feel good,quiet, locals beach. I enjoy the unscheduled action. Either a helicopter fly over, watching big ships going through the Bay Bridge Tunnel, sailboats, windsurfers, skim boarders, kiteboarding, people strolling with kids and dogs. I do miss seeing the military guys (SEAL's) swimming , talk sand dunes, and larger pods of dolphin that have dwindled over the years). We take pride in our beach from the Amphibious Base to the Lesner Bridge. So you will also see people picking up trash as they walk. We rival any California sunset!! read more

I cannot speak for the entire beach, but the parts where we go is gorgeous. Right under the Lesner Bridge there is a spot where there's plenty shade, free parking, and gentle waters. We also do some grabbing here and it's the perfect spot! It seems to be a secret and only the locals know about it because it's just so quiet. Away from all the traffic, chaos, and crowds..it's an oasis alright. I love this spot. I'll make sure to visit the rest of Chick's Beach. read more

I love this beach! It's off of the main strip of Virginia Beach so you can really relax and avoid some of the huge crowds that Virginia Beach usually has. Also because it's more of in the bay, the waves aren't as big and rough. Really great for a family. I really consider this place a hidden spot. Nice, quiet beach area away from the crowded tourist spots on VA beach. Parking was tricky but I followed a yelper's tip to follow Woodlawn street down to the end for free parking. It was a little walk to the beach from there, but not a problem. There were a lot of people out on the beach midday on a Sunday, but it was definitely not crowded. The waves were gentle and the water was nice. Only thing is I got a lot of bug bites in this area, and I do wish the beach had an area for rinsing off before heading back to your car. read more

No offense to tourists, they are always welcome, but there is a charm to this beach for not being overflowing with beach towels and parasols to the point you can't step your foot into the sand. I had a great time here and the beach atmosphere is quiet, relaxed, and enjoyable. Parking however was a nightmare! Chick's Beach is new to me so when my friend asked me to meet her and her 2 year-old her I had no idea what I was in for. I went where she told me she usually parks and I drove through every street of that neighborhood twice-no luck. I found a spot 4-5 blocks away in a different neighborhood and we all got to experience a new section of the beach. The water is shallow pretty far out which I think makes this a great beach to take your little ones to. read more

Wow! What a hidden gem. Chick's Beach (Chesapeake Beach) is a quaint spot. It's a Bay Beach and the sand is clean, no rocks or harsh waves. We saw some dolphins near the shore line and the locals we encountered were friendly. Dog friendly beach. There is an Aldi and Dollar Tree 5 min away for any items you might need. Parking is not easy unless you live here or have a rental house for the week! No bathrooms or showers nearby . Take a day trip to Virginia Beach Boardwalk which is about 12 miles away. Locals rule here. No tourists. Never overly crowded. You sort of have to be in the know to find it and then find a place to park. It's in one of the most unique neighborhoods in Virginia Beach. All the houses are kept up, but you'll see 1950's style beach bungalows next to contemporary monstrosities. Very cool just to drive around and see the older houses. The secret to parking: You are allowed to parallel park on the side of the street but you have to be on the grass (don't be intimidated by the fancy houses, you're allowed to park in their yard and they know it's part of living there). Just make sure you are parked facing the right side of the road. You will get a ticket if you are parked on the street (not grass) and if you aren't facing the right direction. The cops are always patrolling. The water is blah: Aside from the parking, the other downside to this beach is it's the Chesapeake Bay. There are no waves and the water is brownish and murky compared to the beaches further south on the coastline. Cheers: The upside, you can drink on the beach. Most of the other beaches in Virginia Beach are family friendly and do not allow alcohol. read more

I adore this beach. This is a GREAT beach if you are looking to get away from the touristy beaches of VA Beach. Get there early to find good parking, and make sure you observe the parking signs/rules because they WILL tow you. We stayed 4 hours and I saw a tow truck both times I walked back to my car for something. This is an awesome beach if you have kids - especially smaller ones. The waves are very gentle and calm. My only real complaint was when the tide reaches a certain level, there is a dropoff of about a foot, perhaps more. If you have toddlers, you have to kind of watch out for that. Lot of folks walking their dogs on the beach. Other commenters have complained about unruly dogs, but so far, I haven't seen any of that. The animals we saw were very friendly and left people's things alone. We will definitely be going to Chick's beach as our "usual" spot. read more

No, Chick's Beach (technically called Chesapeake Beach, but no one calls it that) isn't tourist friendly. And that's the way we like it. You have to know where to park. And if I told you, I might have to kill you. But seriously, it is the utterly laid back antidote to the Oceanfront. It's situated on the bay, so there are no big waves. That makes it a really great beach for younger kids. I always check the tide charts online and try to go near low tide because the kids can walk out into the water a long way and play in the tidal pools closer to the beach. The thing about Chick's is that it's not just a beach. It's an entire area of town. It's a lifestyle which seems like some kind of last refuge of old school Virginia Beach. It's much more like the Outer Banks of NC than the rest of VB. There's this sort of democratic laid back feel to it in the sense that there are multi-million dollar waterfront homes there and then there are what amount to little more than beachy rental shacks. But no one seems to mind. Of course, Chick's is also a big party beach. Until recently the cops have been fairly lenient on drinking there as long as you're not too obvious. For years Chick's has been home to a big off-the-grid 4th of July celebration. People bring their own fireworks. I'm not talking sparklers and poppers. I'm talking thousands of dollars worth of illegal big boys loaded into wheelbarrows and brought out to the beach minutes after the cover of darkness. But Virginia Beach's finest have lost their patience with these shenanigans in the last couple of years. read more

I'm not a beach person (if you can't tell by my pasty-white complexion) but this is a pretty nice spot to take a load off and relax for a bit. While I don't do the beach thing often at all, I do enjoy coming out to this spot a couple of times per summer. Best thing about it? No tourists! It is peaceful and quiet and I can usually read a book without screaming children or couples making out all around me. Chicks Beach is a great neighborhood beach on the Chesapeake Bay. I like to walk the beach at 5 AM when I get out of work accross the lesner bridge from there. There are some great sunrises to be seen from this beach. I also like to walk this beach in the afternoon before I go into work. There is a great beach community along the beach and the people that live here and enjoy the beach are friendly and add to the personality of this cool beach. I love coming to this beach. Great to get away for a bit, drink some booze, and water isn't too deep. Good for me since I dread waves and I can't swim well haha. Be careful where you park. Neighbors are out and about even late at night! A lot of them run and walk their dogs. Be mindful, for this is a private beach can't be too wild. This is also a great beach for kids. read more
