Friendly and helpful staff Restaurant was clean and spacious Food was good, portions were decent size

Chilaqiles with steak in a red mole. Everything was great!

You say you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary? Maybe Mexican, but not so traditional, with adventure and flair? This little cafe could likely win your heart. Their menu features traditional dishes from Oaxaca, a large southern Mexican state along the west coast. Do not expect your typical, northern Mexican cuisine found in Southern California. Our first 'ah ha' moment was when we opened the menu and discovered it would really be helpful to be bi-ligual. The entire menu was in Spanish. Only Spanish. And there were many pages. To their credit, there were also many tantilizing pictures to point at and drool. Then there was our delightful server who understood our dilemma and came to our rescue by translating and answering our many questions... like, is it spicy? And, no, these dishes are not spicy, as in hot. Just rich and flavorful. Apparently, Oaxaca is famous for their 7 types of moles (sauces). Oaxacan cuisine features mystical blends of spices and chiles that, when combined, are complex yet smooth. If you are unfamiliar with such cuisine, do as we did. At our request, our server brought little samples of 4 of their moles on some chips. Some were sweet, some were savory. Each was unique and convinced us to be unafraid of trying something unfamiliar. Our personal favorites were the Oaxacan version of Salsa Verde with a bright, parsley taste instead of cilantro and the Amarillo which is a lighter sauce made with crushed tomato, cumin, oregano and garlic. The Verde is usually paired with pork. The Amarillo, which was actually orange in color, they say goes nicely with chicken or beef. Meanwhile, our server brought out a basket of complimentary, fried tortilla chips. Except these weren't traditional at all. These came drizzeled with a sweet, red mole and topped with a crumbly white cheese. How fun, and delicious. Crisp and super fresh. There were 3 of us this first time around. Two of us chose chilaquiles: one chilaquiles with steak only, the other with steak and pork. The meat is thinly sliced, fairly lean, and had nice grill marks on it. The crispy chips are tossed in a mole sauce that was not sweet (possibly the Amarrillo mole) then topped with a dry cheese. I've seen bigger portions, but this was really good. The other dish was chicken in a black mole. This consisted of a leg and thigh, rice, and a huge ladleful of sweet, black mole. Mr. B said it was good, but would not order it again, eyeing the amarrillo mole for next time. Their meals come plated with rice and beans, but again, they are anything but ordinary. They serve savory, very flavorful black beans instead of the more common refried pinto beans. The rice is equally a winner, cooked in a broth that gives it a rich taste. Based on the rich flavors, I would not be surprised if they use lard, not oil, for their cooking. It makes a big difference. I have always preferred the lard-cooked version. I found these to be exceptional. Their server shared that their other Oaxacan specialty is Tlayuda, a huge, crispy flour tortilla with all kinds of toppings. They are humongous and a complete meal. These are cooked on the griddle with beans, several types of meat, vegetables, and cheese. They are jaw-dropping beautiful and big enough for 2. If you are looking for incredible, handmade corn tortillas, this is the spot! Their's are thick, tender, and simply wonderful. In a small refrigerator by the cashier are a few Oaxacan desserts like custard filled pastry horns, flan, rice pudding, and cream filled empanadas. The flan looked very enticing, I'm so glad I bought some. It was very dense, creamy, and not very sweet at all, even with the burnt sugar syrup. It was absolutely perfect in my book. Highly recommended! We were very impressed with their hospitality. The service was great. Our server was attentive and very helpful. This small, non pretentious restaurant is a must try. Apparently, this is quite popular with the locals. By the time we left, it was bustling, full of large families out for a terrific and apparently authentic, Sunday meal.

Mole rojo was delicious. I ate this dish with so much joy. The chicken was so tender and the mole was tasty that I left the container sparkling clean and I am not exaggerating. Service was great and the lady was explaining me all the different moles they make.

I've had this place bookmarked for way too long! Finally stopped by and WOW!! The most authentic food I've had in Riverside. The ambience and service was great too, loved hearing the live music while we enjoyed our meal. I can't recommend this place enough.

was looking for a place with good food and decided to stop in since it had good reviews and food looked good. the style of food is different then most traditional Mexican restaurants. but decided to get a basic plate. it was really good. they seem to use many dishes with crickets but thats not my cup of tea so I skipped that. but definitely enjoyed my sweet coffee and meal.

The food was delicious. My goodness I can't wait to go back The food tasted authentic. The portions are perfect. The tlayuda - well that could be a shared item. We couldn't help but order more food than we were able to eat, but how can you not? It's all so delicious

Everything was super cute. Their food is very flavorful, the refried beans and the meats had a lot of depth and flavor. The vibes and decor is super cute and cultural and they even have a cute little photo spot in the corner. The place isn't very fancy, it's more of a sit down casual dining place. The service was very good, and they were very welcoming. Their salsa was sooo good, they have one super spicy one that literally burned my stomach and mouth but it was sooo addicting that I kept eating thru the pain lol I asked for some to go hahahah, I'd come again. It's very authentic according to my friends who are from there. The menu is in Spanish but they help you out. Omg they serve crickets too, i tried one it tasted very lemony, something to try lol

Run, do not walk to this hidden treasure. Highly recommend you share the Fiesta de molés dish so you get a taste of 7 different types of mole. All of them are delicious. The huitlacoche empanada is probably the best one I've ever had. Prices very reasonable and staff is quick and friendly. 10/10 definitely recommend.

Phenomenal meal. Everything was absolutely amazing. Complimentary chips covered with their mole coloradito and they also let you try the other flavors of mole. The mole coloradito is a sweet mole dish that comes with rice and tortillas. The mole rojo comes with rice as well and tortillas but this mole is on the spicer side. I also got to try their mole negro in tamale wrapped in plantain leafs the flavor was rich and sweet very well balanced. I didn't think the tamale would fill me up but it did. Took my mole coloradito to go. Their horchata comes with melon and nuez and honestly I never tired anything like it. It comes with a spoon so you can scoop out the melons and nuez. Everything since thing I tried hit the mark and the employees were very welcoming and friendly. 10s across the board, food, quality, and service.

Two words: handmade tortillas! So rare nowadays, and it always tells me the meal will be phenomenal. I had the Mole Verde con Espinazo de Puerco, Aka Pork in green mole. Omg, this was an amazing dish. It had green beans, chayote squash, I believe there was yucca root pure in it too. Incredibly balanced. I used Google translate too late on this menu. Ill definitely be back to try a lot of other things. Love the food!

Warm and welcoming atmosphere. Super friendly staff who are extremely attentive, happy to offer suggestions and seemed genuinely delighted to introduce their culture and cuisine to those who haven't experienced oaxacan food. The chips with mole, the tlayuda, the mole tamale, the fresh salsa, the fresh nutty ice cream, and even the grasshoppers were all amazing. The tlayuda was my favorite because every bite tasted unique with the many toppings sprinkled all over. The tortilla was perfectly crispy and allowed us to eat it in slices. The oaxacan horchata with pecans, melon & prickly pear syrup was sweet and refreshing. The tamale was larger than a regular tamale. It had chicken, mole sauce that added the prefect spice and the masa that was not as dry as standard tamales. It will become a favorite along with the tlayuda. While I wasnt excited to try grasshoppers, I was surprised at how they didnt feel like them nor taste bad. It was an interesting experience, but I can't say I'll try that again. Multiple staff returned to check on us and their pride in sharing their cuisine with the world was apparent. And for good reason. If you haven't tried oaxacan cuisine, I would definitely recommend this as you first restaurant because they'll make you love it as much as they do.

I found out about it through my cousin, who's a UCR alum, and I'm really glad I finally got to try it. The staff were super nice and attentive, constantly coming by our table to check if we needed more water, tortillas, or anything else we might want. Even with how busy it was, they still made sure everyone was taken care of, which I really appreciated. The restaurant was packed, and it actually surprised me because I don't usually see that many people at restaurants in Riverside. The energy inside felt lively but still comfortable. One of my favorite parts was the fresh tortillas. They come out hot and fresh from the oven, and you can literally watch them being made right in front of you, which made it even better. And the best part is they're free. We ordered the carne fajitas and chile relleno. The fajitas were incredible, the meat was juicy, tender, and packed with flavor, with that perfect smoky sear that comes from being cooked fresh on a hot skillet. Everything came out sizzling and stayed flavorful with every bite. The chile relleno was also really good, with a nice balance of savory and slightly creamy filling that paired well with the sauce. It was actually my first time trying fajitas, and I can confidently say I'll be ordering them again the next time I come back. I definitely plan on returning while I'm still at UCR to make up for all the years I didn't know this place existed.

My first thought upon seeing the exterior and entering was, "OK, definitely old school", and I was right... Anchos has been around for an amazing 37 years and counting! The large open space is nice 'n brightly lit, yet somehow not too much so. As our hostess walked us to our table, we passed an enclosed tortilla-making machine where the freshest of the fresh tortillas seemed to be popping off the whirling dervish like Mexican hot cakes (which... yeah, duh). After ordering, we were quickly served a huge container of them-- so fresh, one could barely hold these 1000 degree piping hot discs. It was demonstrated to me that the classic way to enjoy the tortillas was to spread a little butter which melts almost instantaneously due to the sun-like hotness of the vessel, a quick dash of salt, and a dollop of their super freshly made mesquite-roasted tomato salsa makes for a yummy appetizer. While that was delicious, for me, the true test of a tortilla is to try it plain first. And boy, did it deliver! The style is slightly more risen than traditional, but tasty none-the-less, and I would soon find out why its actually the perfect tortilla for our main entrées-- the CARNE mesquite grilled plump skirt steak fajitas! Now I am always dubious when a restaurant calls out that one of their items is "FAMOUS" and actually prints it right on the menu, but in this case I truly get it. These thick juicy slices of mesquite grilled skirt steak are mind-glowingly muy delicioso, and YES, they are plump indeed. We ordered medium-rare, and they came out to perfection! Years ago, I wrote the steak fajitas at the Rio Grande restaurant in Boulder, CO had "the absolutely unequivocal best steak fajitas I have ever tasted in my life!", and I tell you, these really put that statement to the test. If I'm being honest, the steak itself at Anchos is truly on another level. It's not that it's the best "fajita steak" I've ever had, it's possibly the best "steak steak" I've ever had. OK, that's probably an overstatement, but it's not too far off. While I still think the accoutrements of the Rio Grande fajitas (mainly their phenomenal grilled peppers & onions) are standouts, the carne asada here at Anchos is nothing short of amazing! And those tortillas... yup, the slightly extra thickness holds up well when you fill it with with the extra thick cut carne asada, and their tasty arroz con frijoles, onions & peppers. Mi plato was WAY too much food, and I happily ate every single bite :-) All-in-all, Anchos still delivers after almost 4 decades of serving the Riverside community, and I hope it's around for decades to come because as I looked around, not only were my friends enjoying Anchos, but everyone in the restaurant seemed to be beaming with the excitement of the great food & service from this wonderful family gem.

Then helped us rearrange the layout yet again once we realized the band needed to be next to the electrical outlets. I was embarrassed to even ask so I started doing it myself but they jumped right in without being asked. If I'm being honest, usually I'm not a fan of buffet meals, so I wasn't expecting much. But everything served was SO delicious! The fajitas were my favorite dish, not only flavorful but also nice & moist. Not only that, but they refilled the food for us as it ran out. They brought out to-go boxes for the leftovers, & best believe my family took home every last bite! The lime margarita tower was SO yummy but also hella dangerous because it was strong!! Other restaurants will give you watered down drinks but El Patron doesn't play. We were only planning on one but it was so good, we couldn't resist getting another. From start to finish, the servers (Leslie and Cecilia) were on POINT. Their service went above & beyond expectations-- continuously checking on us, refilling drinks/food, taking photos, etc. Not only that, but also, when my young autistic nephew unfortunately got sick, they were so incredibly compassionate about it & helped clean up the mess right away. I was absolutely blown away by the attention to detail & quality of care. As my grandma is getting older, we are especially cherishing these final years with her. We spent thousands overall (venue, music, photographer, special mass, etc) but every last cent was worth seeing her happy with all of her loved ones. After many months of planning, I was super nervous about something going wrong but I can honestly say that core memories were made. Thank you to Santiago, Leslie & Cecilia for your hospitality, good food & work ethic-- it truly meant so much for our family unit.
