Oh no, what a disappointment. After years of coming here and always enjoying quality Mexican food, I ordered my go-to California burrito only to find it about half the usual size. I thought, "No biggie, it is still going to be good." Wrong. My burrito was packed with fat, had almost no meat, and was dripping grease from the bottom. I went inside and asked the lady for a refund and if they had changed the recipe. She told me that Jilberto's is under new ownership and using new ingredients. If this is the new standard, they are going to lose a ton of loyal customers. I am bummed. Quality Mexican fast food is rare, and this was one of the last places holding the torch. During my 4 years at UCR, Jilberto's was always a late night staple. While it certainly isn't the best Mexican food I've ever had, the portions are always more than generous and the food is always good. Their self serve salsa bar is always a plus especially after covid shut down most of them. The food is delicious here. I've been coming here since 2007. I even had the opportunity to work here. I know the processes by which they create their delicious food. But honestly, this place is taking a wrong turn. I've come this year religiously before noon hits, and the food is taking a hit with the cutbacks in garnishes and skimming people from ingredients that make their food delicious! I don't mind paying the inflated food prices! But don't skim the ingredients. Today, I came in for carne asada fries and was given less than a teaspoon of white "cotija" cheese. I asked why this was, and the girl gave me the "yeah, it's been like this" reasoning. This has to be honestly one of the best breakfast burritos that I've had in a while, so glad that I found this place. The only negative I would say is that they do not have a drive-thru so make sure you have time to get off the car if you're going before work and want to enjoy a breakfast burrito like me. I love that they have a salsa bar with escabeche, marinated onions, cilantro & onions, along with several salsas. Today, I wanted to get try the hard shell ground beef taco. I was a bit put off by the price, but, since ground beef tacos are my taste test, I had to get one. They have a senior menu with your choice of taco, tostada, beans, and rice. Wow, just wow! It came on a real plate, nicely presented, and fresh! The beans were creamy. The rice was moist and flavorful. The taco meat was juicy and flavorful. The shell crumbled at first bite! My number one go to is always a chili verde burrito ( if they carry them) I ordered it here without hesitation and I was not disappointed. In fact I would rate it as one of my top 3 of all time. Food: Today I wanted something simple so I stuck to the bean and cheese burrito. It was as good as always. It was pretty filling and overall I was satisfied. I also got an agua de horchata. The agua was kinda sweet for my taste but again overall I still thought it was ok because it was balanced by the savory of the burrito. The prices in the whole menu have gone up in the last few years so beware of that if you haven't been here in a while. Service: Pretty good still. The cashier handles most of the work in the front so be mindful of that if it's a busy day. They don't have too many people working. The salsa bar is only touched by the cashier so let them know what you want and they will help you. It is not open like before. Just moved to Riverside so we're trying out some local spots! Came in and actually asked to sample the carne asada and I received one. I asked if the taco shells were premade or homemade and was told homemade... they're not homemade. The asada I tried was delicious. However, that was not the carne I was served. It was cold and crusty (most likely the older asada that had been sitting. I asked about the taquitos and if they were homemade or frozen and was told homemade but they taste horrible. Frozen for sure. The 2 stars is 1 for customer service (was not more because I was told lies about the food. The other star is for the decent chile relleno we tried. After a night of dancing and running around, it was time to fuel up on major carbs. My friends and I came here for lunch and we left the place STUFFED. Some key highlights: -Horchata drink = delicious! Definitely love the light refreshing drink and it wasn't too sweet -Tacos = Tried the lengua (tongue), carnitas, and beef. All three were super tasty and I love how there was plenty of meat. -Carne Asada Chips = massive heap of food. Overall, this huge portion can easily serve as an appetizer for at least 4-5 people. Plenty of meat and such but I felt it tasted a little bland without adding some sauce to the dish. -Sauce/Salsa bar = in general, the sauces were good. Spice level was pretty similar to each other. Definitely like the verde (green) sauce the most -Random note: Tortillas here are really tasty for some odd reason. This is a very good Mexican takeout with some dine-in spots. I very much the enjoyed the Bean and Cheese Burrito, the mainstay by which I always evaluate any Mexican restaurant. The beans were hot and well-cooked. The cheese was well-distributed and the very large tortilla was excellent. The California Burrito with Carne Asada was rated by another member of my group as very good. The Cheese Enchilada did not impress the enchilada expert in my group.
