Popped down on Monday for lunch, best choice for a meal in the Valley so far. The venue is fantastic, views sweeping and pristine. As wine destinations go, Oakridge covers all the bases and then some. The food here is amazing, the kitchen's food philosophy is modern and cutting edge. Everything from the "Kim Che", confit lemon, locally source lamb and the bread made with flour ground on the premises speak volumes of the chef's commitment to quality. The wines produced at Oakridge are a brilliant example of modern Australian wine making, the matching with the meal was spot on. The sommelier really knew his stuff, I also get the feeling the rest of the staff are just as knowledgeable. Trust their guidance and hopefully your experience would be as good as mine, I bought six bottles on the way out!! The staff at Oakridge are justifiably proud of the winery and everything they're doing, this shows thorough in their passion and enthusiasm. It's also a pretty good work environment, they are proud to point out the changing nature of the environment as a contributor to their good mood and high spirits. I would strongly recommend a visit, I know I'll be back.

We had an absolutely amazing lunch here, with not one criticism! We booked a week out to have lunch on a Saturday and were greeted immediately and taken to our seats. Facing the vineyard, water and hills. Great setting! The whole lunch the staff were extremely prompt, never bugging but always coming at the perfect time. I was very surprised that every member of staff has such a friendly attitude and was more than happy to have a chat or a laugh. Interesting to see some of the other reviews call this place sterile or snobby - we had the complete opposite experience! All tables full but not once did we feel forgotten or a burden! For starters we ordered the asparagus Danish and kangaroo loin. The danish was superb! The pastry had an almost sweet croissant taste to it with lovely layers of asparagus and goats cheese on top. It was all topped with a herb salad. The kangaroo was a take on an Asian salad with punchy flavours and beautiful herbs you could see throughout the gardens. Next we ordered the duck Breast with Beetroot and the rainbow trout. Both dishes were cooked to perfection with the duck as the standout winner. Such perfect flavours and crispy skin! We ordered the potatoes on the side which complemented both dishes perfectly. We had a few wines throughout the dish, recommended by the staff and walked away with a few bottles to have later also. All in all an amazing lunch, great atmosphere and again want to commend both the chef on the meals and the staff on their amazing attitudes.

This place looks amazing from the outside. Such beautiful architecture. We entered in hoping to sample some wines, however service inside seemed abit snobby, we weren't greeted and left to aimlessly wonder around. We stayed for a little while, but left due to the lack of anyone welcoming us and running us through their wines.

One of those "destination" tourist traps in wine country. Its setting and architecture is phenomenal! Clean-lined contemporary and sprawling grounds. That said, one can't help but cringe a bit at the overtly sterile and clinical atmosphere of the interior. The wine merchants -- or whatever those folks behind the mile-long tasting counter are called -- have perfunctory and detached business-at-hand personalities. This place sorely lacks the intimacy of the numerous smaller wineries in this beautiful valley. No doubt, with busloads of tourists being shoved into that place like clockwork, there's probably little time for these bar-hands to give anything but small-talk (if that) to the minions. We didn't have time to try its restaurant -- which was packed! -- but, overlooking the menu, unsurprisingly everything was priced for the nouveau-riche in mind. The place reeked of a stuffy, entitled crowd.... If we do decide to ever return (which I highly doubt, esp. with all the other more inviting wineries around), maybe we'll splurge on a lunch. As I said, it was all very perfunctory -- and not even a tour of the wine-making process, or even a drive around the grounds. Yawn...! (The gratis bacci ball and ring toss outside kept the kid amused while the adults drank....)

Walking up to the restaurant.

It was our first visit, and we really enjoyed it. The restaurant is beautifully ultramodern and a sharp contrast to the neatly arranged rows of green in the surrounding vineyard. The views are exquisite. The food was a taste adventure - we chose the shared tasting plate featuring local produce, and it was scrumptious - salmon, prosciutto pork terrine, olives and hummus were featured. My wife ordered vegetarian and really enjoyed the raviolo (yes, singular, it was an outsized one) with lovely goat's cheese, but thought there was too much beetroot to accompany. My lamb was delicious, interestingly fused to a strip of chicken and served with veg greens. Our desserts were chocolate truffle and raspberry panacotta -- both were a pleasant surprise in their presentation and flavour. I guess you could say we really enjoyed it. We're coming back.

But in the Yarra Valley in Australia, gourmet food pairs with gourmet wines in restaurants that are operated by the wineries themselves!

They know how to make delicious wine and have two ranges pitched at slightly different markets - The IB range pitched slightly younger or for what I like to call "Tuesday night drinking" and the Giant Steps which is high end, special drinking and what I like to call "stash it away for later" kind of wine. Each range offers terrific value and you can try both when you visit the cellar door, though the GS tasting will set you back a tasting fee of $10. On top of great wine, these kids know how to cook (pizza, shared-dishes) and know that to keep people happy you should keep them fulfilled with coffee (they roast their own), cheese (the have an amazing selection) and sweet treats (check out their take-home cake and pastry section). It's a massive venue, but don't go assuming you can just rock up unannounced. Giant Steps is hugely popular, particularly on weekends, so do yourself and your hungry family a favour and make a reservation well ahead of arriving.

I enjoyed coming here because it was a nice change of pace from the other "fancier" styles of wineries. It was very peaceful and mellow here while we sipped wine in their farmhouse and gazed over the lush green fields. It was great for photo opportunities too. Our tasting wasn't paced the best and I wasn't a fan of every wine, but they offer apple cider as well which was a nice touch. This is one place that I recommend coming to without a tour because you'll be able to spend more time sitting on their porch relaxing and taking in the sights.

The boutique winery doesn't retail at your local bottle-o but you can find Yering Farms wines in restaurants and can order from the Yering Farm directly. We picked up a case of rose (only $10 a bottle) and some amazing desert wine. The lovely lady (Amanda i think) was happy to talk her way through all the wines and help us with anything we needed. The grounds were lovely and lush. All a lot to take in from the small shed where we were tasting from, the shed itself had such a great boutique feel about it. They had local artwork available to buy and sweet pieces on the wall (like a 'wanted ned kelly' poster).

As we parked I thought, "okay, so there's only one other car here." Stepping in I was thinking to myself "uhhhh..." I really had no idea what to expect. Going to a blueberry farm, when it's not even blueberry season, what do you do here? Smart thinking right? But, I was reassured of my decision when we were immediately helped to try out some of the different beverages that they have. We tried the St. Ronan's Ciders: apple and pear. They also have another apple cider on tap. As I was trying these out, my eyes lingered upon the wall behind the counter, and I saw that they also offered a range of blueberry wines. How could I possibly come to a blueberry farm and not try out their blueberry drinks? After tasting the wine, sparkling and fortified, we chose a glass each of the blueberry wine. It's home grown and hand made, you are actually parking right beside the farm. Now the blueberry wine...first off, BLUEBERRY WINE! How cool is that? Not only does it smell just like blueberry pancakes, but it tastes like smashed blueberries, and takes you straight to blueberry heaven. It's very light, and it could be drank like a white wine, or you could make sangria with it. I've had other fruit wines before, but I had never tried blueberry, until now. And seriously, it rocked my world. Accompanied with a blackberry coconut cake and a side of ice cream, we sat down by the fireplace. It was...perfect. Tucked away from the busyness of Healesville on a weekend, this place is away from the crowds, so that you can recollect yourself to sanity. It's quiet, chill, and trendy with jazzy music. On a winter's day, with a cozy warm fireplace, wide windows to take in the views, and a glass of wine, how could it can get any better? They also have a good range of homemade jams and toppings. But my only regret is not taking home a bottle of their delicious tasty wine! I've been raving about it ever since! The blueberry wine, I just can't get it off my mind!

They don't offer the conventional Yarra Valley wines (in my opinion); it reminded me of a hippi-take on a vineyard. We sampled two of their sorbets and loved their pear cider sorbet more (light, airy, refreshing, and not too sweet). We also loved their pear cider so much (you will never taste anything like it and no, it isn't super girly) that we bought some to take back home (TO the U.S.). It's not huge, so with many more than 20 people you'll be squeezed for space, but for a small trip this place is great. However my favourite part of an escape to the Yarra Valley would have to be exploring what the wineries in the area have to offer. Coombe Farm is owned by the family of the famous opera singer Dame Nellie Melba. It's one of the oldest vineyard estates in the area and offers free tastings seven days a week (Tuesday and Wednesday is by appointment, I believe). The tasting room is far more relaxed than other nearby wineries. I was there round midday on a Sunday and the two ladies working could not have been more helpful. They were informative, friendly and keen to educate customers about their range of wines. It was such a pleasant experience. Compared to other tastings at different wineries, Coombe Farm stood out as somewhere more enjoyable. I felt as though I could have sat there for ages, chatting with the staff like old friends and trying wines. In particular it was non-intimidating, so I felt comfortable enough to ask questions that I'd been pondering about wine. As much as I may love drinking wine, I'm not extremely knowledge on the subject and this was a great opportunity to ask and learn more as I tried. In contrast, I felt rushed and a little bit intimidated at other wine tastings in the area. Next time I visit Coombe Farm, I would love to relax outside on the deck and watch over the vines, with a glass in hand. I'm already dreaming of another lazy Sunday wine exploration!
