In an area where getting a good beer can be difficult, Oscar's is a godsend…read more Sure, you can go to the Royal Hotel and pay $5 during happy hour but you won't be happy for very long when you end up losing a tooth or lose your dole money on the pokies. Every time I've been to Oscars I've been served well and staff know the drinks, Brad chooses everything himself and doesn't put just anything on the menu. This system indicates to me a true love of what he does and giving a shit about the things that are served up. Oscar's has live bands, poetry nights and other artsy events from time to time. We meet up with a friend who lives in Belgrave from time to time, my husband loves it. The best place to get a good beer in the area.

With Melbourne's love affair with microbreweries and good beer growing by the hour, Oscars Alehouse…read moreopened its doors to provide the hills folk and tourists alike with a bar that understands the importance of good beer. The premises are intimate and charming, with old wood and comfy seating adding to the overall charm. With a great range of beer on tap and in the bottle, Oscars is the perfect place to sample and discover your new favourite beer. Last I heard there wasn't a full kitchen so food is in the way of gourmet snacks, such as cheeses and olives. A small beer garden opens out from the back, and live music is hosted on a regular basis, with very decent acts choosing to stop by and play an acoustic set. (Check the Facebook page for what's on.)

I've got a love-hate thing going on with this place…read more I love that it's there and open really late and is somewhere secure I can wait for a taxi if I've caught the last train and there are no more buses, staff are friendly (most of the time, love the later staff). I can't stand the sound of pokie machines, the bistro is brightly lit with no ambience, I don't think they do bands anymore and the drink options are very limited albeit cheap. Smokers can retreat to the cage out the front which takes away any class the establishment may have had left, it looks very tacky. Yet, I'd be upset if it wasn't here. Weird isn't it? It's an outer suburb hotel that serves cheap booze and has a load of machines, an area you can socialise with your mates and somewhere to get some grub if you need to take a break from your machine plus it's open till 3. What more can you ask for?

We booked a table for 2 last night in the bistro. My partners meal was okay, nothing to rave about,…read morebut my meal (roast beef) was without doubt the worst meal l have ever had in a hotel in my life. (67 years) The vegetables were over cooked, soggy but at least were edible. However, the roast beef was paper thin, stringy & devoid of any flavour. I did not consume it as it was inedible. A very nice young man collected my plate & l explained the situation to him & asked him to alert the "chef"of my dilema. No response. I would have taken the matter further, but we had to go to the 1812 theatre for an 8pm start. Considering the meals were priced @ Restautant quality, it is no wonder the place was only quarter full on a Friday night. Something's got to change before we ever step foot inside this establishment again.
