I've only been to the Standard Hotel a few times despite it being so close to my house. It's easy to forget it is there as it is set back away from the hustle and bustle of Brunswick Street. However, when you are there you remember exactly what it has going for itself. 1) Huge Beer Garden with large wooden tables with a great atmosphere. 2) Good pub food in a similar vein to the Napier. 3) An extensive wine list. Last time I ate there, I had the peppered kangaroo steaks with a bacon and chive mash and a sauce made from port wine. The mash was crazy good, the kangaroo delicious and the port wine gravy kept everything really moist. The place was pretty rammed and it did take quite a long time to arrive but it was worth the wait. I'd say the Standard rivals the Napier but probably just gets pipped to the post. Nevertheless, I'd recommend it highly.

The Standard Hotel has one of Melbourne's best beer gardens. As such it is definitely a favourite of the locals and would probably be a favourite of non locals if it wasn't tucked away in the backstreets of Fitzroy. Either way it doesn't matter, because this place is always packed. Having lived right next to the Standard Hotel for a long period of time I have been privy to some great drunken conversations from clientele leaving this establishment. I have heard a man being dumped by his french girlfriend, the grand plans of a local pub band and where they saw themselves in five years time and countless cat fights. And this is exactly what the Standard Hotel is about - great conversations in the back yard over a beer or two. Throw in a bit of pub food or a few cigarettes and even a some live music if you're lucky and you have the makings of some great dialogue - just make sure you keep it civil enough so your French girlfriend doesn't want to dump you on the spot.

A very divey pub with a massive beer garden. I suspect quite brilliant in summer time. In winter, less so!

Review Highlights - The Standard Hotel

Great place for big groups and as many before me have stated, probably the best beer garden in Melbourne.

Goodbye Der Raum... hello Bar Economico!…read more Gone are the days of $20+ cocktails that take almost as much time to make as an episode of Friends. Instead, Matthew Bax has opened a cheap, cheerful, tongue-in-cheek dive bar where everything is bought with pre-paid tickets and you're made to feel like you're drinking in some third world country. Visit the "managers" booth at the back and buy a collection of tickets at $5 each. They're only valid for the night you're there, so don't go crazy until you know you're in for a serious session. With shots and beer starting at 1 ticket (that's $5 people!) all the way up to 4 tickets for the super boozie Zombie cocktails, there's something priced for everyone. The most popular cocktails seem to be those around the $10 mark. They're quick to be made, with a lot of the booze pre-mixed in bottles and then built in a plastic up filled with ice. While the focus is on affordable booze, the quality is certainly not dropped. Drinks are garnished properly and the liquor is of a good quality. Service is chatty and efficient and luckily they're safely held behind the bar "cage" because some of those bartenders are smokin' hot and I imagine the ladies might get out of control. The ambiance? I felt like I was participating in an art installation rather than experiencing a bar. Is this a good thing? Maybe not for every night of the week but if you're after something fun and different then give it a whirl. The music is crazy electro-jazz-swingy and keeps the spirits high. The crowd is cool, arty and hipster-y.

Either way, it has such potential but I just didn't experience the potential greatness when I went in one quite Saturday night. They operate off a ticket system with one ticket equalling $5.50, which is really cool, if they actually utilised this system, however they didn't & from what I hear they don't often, which kind of ruins the whole vibe as the drinks lists don't actually tell you what is in the drinks nor the prices, just how many tickets each drink is worth. It is a very small area with tables randomly placed around & you have to stand in awkward areas such as in front of the bathroom entrance or hover around the bar with no stools for you to sit on. I will for sure go back & give it another shot because I wouldn't say I don't like the place, maybe it was just a bad night? Not sure, my cocktail was nice & I really want to be cool enough to go there haha.

However I don't mind the place, it just seems to be a little more classier than what I tend to like. They do have quite a nice beer garden, as well as some decent beers on tap, but I tend to walk past this one to the two pubs that happen to have rooftop decks that happen to be on the other side of the railway line. Sure, it does seem to be quite popular, and there have been times that the place has been absolutely packed, and I don't actually mind it all that much, however the atmosphere, and the fact that there are better places in the vicinity mean that I usually give this place a miss.

On the one occasion we were here, our friend knew the doormen and we were let in. The bar/pub itself is quite a big area decked out with plasma TVs and quite snazzy decor. The courtyard area is pretty nice and a great spot to get some air. We were there on a Friday night and there was a cover band playing. Although they were pretty cheesy and played even cheesier tunes, I have to admit it was pretty fun. It's not really my scene if I'm honest but good times were had all the same.

It's one of our 'footy pubs' that me and my mates frequent before and after games - a 10 min walk to the MCG seemingly scaring off the bogan throngs that must filter in places closer to the ground. Staff is always friendly and welcoming, it's vibrant without being too busy, and the pub grub has never let me down yet. Ideally they would add a few more taps and beer variety, or at least rotate more frequently to mix things up, but it's a small complaint. Yet to partake in a trivia night yet but one started up around us recently and it looked like good fun that we'll likely come back to try. Note: I have extreme bias as have been lucky enough to celebrate several of my team's Grand Final victories here, so The Prince Pat will always have a special place in my heart for that alone!
