Transport has to be the bar that has some of the most eclectic clienteles you could ever imagine. It's vicinity to Flinders Street Station and it's prime location as the main bar you'll see in Fed Square make it a place that gets an incredible amount of foot traffic and is often full with a line outside at weekends. Transport is a place where suburbanites and city slickers mix. It makes for an interesting crowd. It's also a place that if you are looking for a good time (if you know what I mean), well frankly, it is prime for that. It's both a hugely flattering and hugely unflattering term to describe a place as a meat market but Transport certainly is that. They have foreign beers and good looking women (amongst others of course). The outside seating is also quite a cool spot to hang out.

In a word: no. Look, I don't want to be a hater based on the quite obvious fact that this place is generically popular, hugely mainstream and almost boringly centrally located, but there's just something about Transport that I can't get on board with. Great, scenic location? Tick! Speedy service? Tick! Good wine list? Tick! Atmosphere? Erm, no. That, coupled with the fact that Transport seems to attract both an inordinate amount of 'suits' and girls who might as well be in their birthday suits and I am definitely not a fan. On the plus side, Transport has a good amount of outdoor seating and being located at the epicentre of Federation Square is obviously a boon, but if you're after a drink somewhere interesting, cool or at all idiosyncratic, I suggest you transport yourself elsewhere.

If I'm going out for a night in the city, this is generally where my friends and I will choose to meet for a few early drinks, before we decide where we are going. The reason being? That if we are too indecisive in choosing another place to go to, we can always stay at Transport, and have a good time anyway. The bar is right across from Flinders st Station, and makes it really easy for people finishing work in the city to meet up with friends coming in from the suburbs. This place is a modern Melbourne pub. With all the regular beers and bar drinks available, plus a few other international beers and wines, I'd say that the drinks are a little pricey compared to average pub prices, but then again this place is also alot nicer than the average pub. I cant comment on the food because I am yet to try it, but I defintely like the bar service and the general ambiance. Quick tip: Go early, because later in the evening a line forms - earlier you'll walk straight in.

Billed as an award winning architecturally designed pub in the finest tradition. Amen to that. I think what they mean by a pub in the finest tradition is, in a nutshell, the clientele. I've been out of the whole singles scene for a long time, so I guess its why I find it so amusing here. It looks so upper class, but the amount of bogans, skankish people and drunken messes is unbelievable at Transport. Which is why I love it!! It really is the place city folk go on the weekends to get absolutely shit faced and layed, exactly in that order. It's also open from midday for decent sized, good pub grub (that's the talk, isn't it?), and is a great spot for a Sunday arvo sesh. Good location, cheapish drinks, full bar, open outdoor spaces, and good time party people of all sorts. It's bound to be one helluva time!!

Review Highlights - Transport Hotel

If location is anything, this place has picked out the most coveted spot; right opposite Flinders station and bang in the middle of Federation Square.

However I know how much fun this is! I drag people along and they fall in love! It's so much fun. You order at the bar, best value is the 3L beer tap, gets brought to your table and glasses always filled up for $48 or make it a spirit for $68. It's great for a group of 4 or 5 to share. And then from there it's $2 per person per game. Now that's just amazing for the sake of $10 you got yourself a good few hours in this place! If your looking for something to do in the city I promise you'll love it here, take some friends down see them give you a weird look until you get in and start playing! Let the fun begin.

Five minutes later we had a lit up beer tap and a board ready for us to play! Talk about efficiency! The games uses only coins, you can exchange notes for coins at the bar. There's a whole variety of different types of IDarts games. We took turns, one team vs another. The darts are made from strong plastic and once thrown it attaches itself to one of the many holes on the dart board. That's only if you dart it strong enough onto the board. The game has camera technology, so if you missed a shot, it can detect it. It's a lot of fun and you learn more about the intricacies of darting!

I have to admit that I am somewhat impressed with their evolution over time, namely in regards to the beers that are available, and the fact that they have raised the concept of a sports bar to a new level, namely that they feel much better to sit down with a drink, and a lot less sleazy, that others. Of course, one of the main things that sets them apart is the fact that they pretty much has no pokies.

The fitout of this sports bar didn't do a lot for me. A bit grey and dull, I reckon. The scotches on offer were a bit pedestrian. I chose a Glenfiddich which was ok but as always no standout performer. Service was just ok here without any real warmth or human interest. I actually prefer the pokies pub up the road - and I momentarily forget its name - despite the fact that I detest pokies. The atmosphere is better there. The staff have been lovely there when I've visited. Tim E's review encourages me to discount thoughts of ever eating at the Sporting Club. In the end the only thing I really liked was the name of the place although a person I trust likes this place. Such is life. PS - I later remembered the name of the pub up the road. It's called The Vine. The front bar is called The Vineyard. In all of Melbourne there's not a place that looks less like a vineyard.

For example late on a Saturday or Sunday evening they would often be showing the early games of the English Premier League. The atmosphere would usually be pretty good and there would be a lot of mingling going on. With so many TVs they would offer cater to multiple audiences if they wanted to watch different sports too. Another good thing about the Quarry Hotel is that it is a bottle shop as well. In the surrounding area there are a number of restaurants that are BYO - Thaila Thai and Kakke Di Hatti to name a couple. It is a good place to get your cheap drinks as well as your cheap eats in Brunswick East. And the food is good and honest too.

The Quarry, is the type of pub that is seemingly a dying breed of ya local...well at least it feels that way. You used to be able to go to any corner pub and order a reliable Parma, house white or beer with your friends and listen to some average, old school tunes in the company of pool tables, dart boards and maybe a random keno screen and go home a little buzzed, happy and without breaking the bank. These days, every pub is either calling themselves a "gastro pub" (most likely a normal pub but charging more because they are using roquette instead of ice berg) (no beef with actual gastro pubs) and using this as an excuse to charge double for food and drinks and lower their quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, there are pubs who have plain just thrown the towel in. Defrosted Kiev from Woolies, with half mashed peas with ketchup and a pot- $10. Sweet deal, but you're lucky to get out alive without a disease with your shoes in tact. The Quarry is like the old pubs you remember. Friendly, reliable and with the sweet clanks of billiard balls in the distance as you peacefully enjoy your brew and feed, with helpful yet passive aggressive staff. It's awesome. Much recommend! A main meal and alcoholic bev for under $25, plus specials all throughout the week!
