Came to Yering while on a winery tour through the Yarra Valley. The wine was delicious, the views were magnificent, and the staff was friendly and hospitable. There is plenty of opportunity to walk around and take in the sights while you enjoy your wine. I love that there was a huge porch area to sit and soak in the views. My only complaint was that we didn't spend more time here!

But what really impressed me was the knowledge & friendliness of the worker who was taking us through the tastings. Her knowledge of the wines was top rate and was matched by her in-depth details on Dame Nellie Melba's life. Her passion was evident as she wasn't simply reciting facts but engaging us with the contributions and achievements Dame Nellie made. Highly recommend a long visit.

The scenery itself is beautiful, yet only an hours drive away from the CBD. However my favourite part of an escape to the Yarra Valley would have to be exploring what the wineries in the area have to offer. Coombe Farm is owned by the family of the famous opera singer Dame Nellie Melba. It's one of the oldest vineyard estates in the area and offers free tastings seven days a week (Tuesday and Wednesday is by appointment, I believe). The tasting room is far more relaxed than other nearby wineries. I was there round midday on a Sunday and the two ladies working could not have been more helpful. They were informative, friendly and keen to educate customers about their range of wines. It was such a pleasant experience. Compared to other tastings at different wineries, Coombe Farm stood out as somewhere more enjoyable. I felt as though I could have sat there for ages, chatting with the staff like old friends and trying wines. In particular it was non-intimidating, so I felt comfortable enough to ask questions that I'd been pondering about wine. As much as I may love drinking wine, I'm not extremely knowledge on the subject and this was a great opportunity to ask and learn more as I tried. In contrast, I felt rushed and a little bit intimidated at other wine tastings in the area. Next time I visit Coombe Farm, I would love to relax outside on the deck and watch over the vines, with a glass in hand. I'm already dreaming of another lazy Sunday wine exploration!

They don't offer the conventional Yarra Valley wines (in my opinion); it reminded me of a hippi-take on a vineyard. We sampled two of their sorbets and loved their pear cider sorbet more (light, airy, refreshing, and not too sweet). We also loved their pear cider so much (you will never taste anything like it and no, it isn't super girly) that we bought some to take back home (TO the U.S.). So take in the beautiful apple trees (they totally grow different down under) and try something different! *Not trolling with tourists was a BIG plus.

No cellar door here, but you don't really need it. It's just a cute, modern building, with a couple knowledgeable staff to pour till your heart's content. The view out over the vineyards is nice, and early morning will greet you with a bit of a low fog. It's not huge, so with many more than 20 people you'll be squeezed for space, but for a small trip this place is great. My favorites: viognier (nice and crisp, not too fruity or sweet or dry), rosé (like a good red for summer), and their ciders (pear and apple).

What an amazing place with even more amazing people. We were in the Melbourne area in November…read more2011 and wanted to check out a winery, and this one happened to be on our route and, even better, promised some interesting fruit wines. It ended up being one of the most memorable stops on our 3 week vacation. The couple who runs the place could not have been more welcoming or more fun. While they offer grape wines like Chardonnay and Shiraz, I was most interested in trying their kiwi wines. They offer sweet, semi-sweet and dry. I loved all three, but the sweet kept most of the unique kiwi taste. Their strawberry wine was also amazing. When he saw our enthusiasm, our host was only too happy to tell us all about his business, and even to sample one of his secrets to great wine, the water from his spring. We all bought the maximum amount of wine we could bring back to the US, focusing on the strawberry and kiwi. After some visiting and prodding from his delightful wife, our host also let us each try a sip of his raspberry wine. He was completely sold out but had a small personal supply. Let me tell you... ambrosia. It was magic on the tongue. I am watching their website carefully from now on to see if there is any to ship! Whatever it costs to send it to the US, it will be worth it! Our hosts were gracious enough to let us walk the property and take some pictures as well. It was absolutely beautiful. I hope to return someday but until then, this will be one of my most cherished memories of Australia!
