Decent facilities, but could use updates!! I visited Oakmont Rec Center recently and found it to be okay overall. The facility offers a good variety of activities and spaces, but some areas feel outdated and could use better maintenance. The staff was polite and helpful, though it was sometimes hard to get assistance during busy hours. Cleanliness was acceptable, but a bit inconsistent depending on the area. Overall, Oakmont Rec Center is a usable community space, but improvements to upkeep and organization would make it a much better experience. read more

We went to the driving range at Oakmont the other day. They had lots of bays and an upper and lower deck. The putting green was also very large and nicely kept. I grew up going to Oakmarr Rec center when I was younger and they had a great facility for swimming and diving. read more

4/5 - for a general gym goer 2/5 - for a swimmer I've been regularly coming to this rec center for over a year now. Not because it's great, but because it's the closest option to me that has a lap pool. But if you are a serious swimmer be ready to be disappointed. It is nearly impossible to get a lane to yourself and most times it's a toss up if I can get a shared lane at all. See dedicated paragraph if you are a swimmer. The facility in general is not bad. It is not very big compared to Golds Gym or Planet Fitness, both I would recommend if you don't need a pool. The layout of Oak Marr is better than the other two Fairfax RECenters. Top floor has the cardio equipment, various machines and a stretch/dance room. Lower floor has the weights, 2 racketball courts, and several multipurpose rooms for classes. I think the machines are in pretty good shape. Every now and then there is 1 or two broken treadmills. But the times I've gone (weekday after 5pm, weekends), I haven't really had to wait for equipment. I wish the there was more space for stretching and calisthenics. I try to use the stretch room if there isn't a class but it is often occupied. The downstairs rooms are only for classes. The weight room has a good number of weights and benches (see photos). I think this location has the widest range of dumbells (from 3lbs to 120lbs) and they are in good shape. Sometimes the weight room can get crowded, but for the most part I have not had any issues. I should mention that there are cubbies in the top and bottom floors as well as within rooms. Locker room. There is a women's, men's, and family room. It has a decent number of lockers, though it is operated by quarters...seriously quarters in the 21st century?! No way to utilize your own lock. You are better off using the cubbies or the benches and hooks on the side of the pool. There are a handful of showers (8), one of which is handicap accessible. The others are pretty small. There are 3 changing stalls and a few toilets, which smell like piss most of the time. It is clear that they don't clean the place well daily if even weekly. Pool: as usual if you are a swimmer you will have a tough time finding a free lane. All throughout the year, most lanes will be blocked off for classes/team practices and sometimes completely blocked for swim meets. They take place during off work hours. Multiple times I have been kicked out of a lane up to ten mins before a class reservation, which is rather rude given how few lanes are available to the public. I could easily do another 500 in that time.. It is irritating, but unfortunately I have yet to find a better option in Fairfax county aside from forking over $100+/month at a Lifetime gym. The natatorium does have a super shallow end for kids, a hot tub, lap lanes with depths ranging from 4ft to 16 ft. There is a separate diving region with 1 m, 3m springboards and 3m, 5m platforms. Only certain times are open to the public. Though I do admit this pool has is pros in being one of the largest in Fairfax with around 13 lanes. They also have digital clocks on all 4 walls that are easy to read. The water temperature is just right ~78F, perfect for competitive lap swimming. There are places on the side where you could put your swim bag down and hooks. Cleanliness wise...let's just say prior to Sept 2022 it was pretty disgusting. Mold on the walls, floor, lane ropes had seen better days...My eyes were often irritated with how contaminated the water was. They even got swollen at one point... But late Aug/early Sept 2022 they did a lot of maintenance and cleaning for the pool area and greatly improved the cleanliness. I just wish they would clean the pool, poolside, and locker rooms throughout the day, daily like my alma mater UMD's natatorium. Especially since this facility services way more people and folks of a younger age... General Comment on Fairfax County RECreation Centers: a membership purchased at any of their centers scattered throughout Fairfax county will get allow you to access any of their RECenters. Though certain specialty facilities like Oak Marr's mini golf/golf complexes and Mount Vernon's ice rink will still have their own fees. There is a $30 for 30 days new membership plan. Otherwise they have an annual plan, a fixed number of visits plan, and a recurring biweekly plan. There is no fee to cancel most of the plans but you may be charged another cycle before they cancel your plan. All of them have swimming pools, but most of the time most of the lanes will be blocked off for classes/team practices. They are not ideal for consistent lap swimmers. The only demographic I can think of that benefits from the Fairfax county RECenters are people who are gym regulars, primarily use cardio and machines. Maybe occasionally swim. Otherwise, if you don't swim there are plenty of cheaper, better options like Planet Fitness or Golds Gym. read more

Oakmont recently went through a renovation that resulted in things that don't make sense. Examples: 1. Safety was not involved with their planning. Spacing is way off in the cardio equipment areas. I personally have been kicked by someone using a piece of equipment as I squeezed through the maze. Noted and reported to staff and management. 2. Again safety and common sense was not used in designing the cardio room area. If you want to use small weights in that area and use a mat, you may end up under a piece of cardio equipment like the rower. The area has been jammed with the equipment that was safely located way on the other side near the steps to go down to the weight room. Oh, there is no mirror in the area either. 3. The handicap shower in the ladies locker room has half a curtain so there is no privacy - ridiculous! 4. The shower head in the ladies handicap shower room has no hanger so it just dangles along the wall towards the floor - ridiculous! 5. There is now only two trash cans in the ladies shower room. Use to be four. Now we see more trash left on the sink and floors go figure. 6. The benches have been replaced with shorter benches that actually hold water and produce water spots. Where did the logic go in that? 7. The sauna has no timer or clock visible to clock your time. 8. Actually spoke with the person who did "the planning" and he appeared clueless when it came to safety or common planning. He said he moved the small weights area because he didn't have anywhere to put the big piece of weight equipment and no where to put the rowing machines so there you go folks - no vision! 9. The staff is tired of people complaining to them and have developed an attitude that shows they are tired of the complaints and they have no problem with telling you this. 10. They have a sign saying the water temperature is set to the original temp, I believe they say 84, and it is in our heads that the water is actually freezing! Go Figure! In closing, I'm not sure where the $$ went for renovations, how they picked their planner or contractors, why didn't they gather input from their customer base, or if we really gained anything that benefits the paying customers, like me. read more

It's okay although it is aging a bit. For a daily price, having the pool and weight room is a little expensive. There are cheaper options, such as a membership. They have very good equipment, but I prefer my private gym more. Recreation is important, and the county has done well here. It's a friendly and welcoming environment. I'd like to thank the exceptional employees. The pool in here triggers some sort of allergy. It's more likely than not that I'm sensitive to chlorine. It's a needed item, so it is a safe, clean pool for all to swim in. Yet this overwhelms me. The weight room upstairs is pretty good. I do like the treadmills with more of a grip material. Also the mini golf is a lot of fun. For some that are into real golf, they have that here. read more

This review is coming from a swimmer. Beautiful pool and the water is at a nice cool temperature for doing laps. The lanes are wide and so I don't really notice if I have to share a lane with somebody. That happens most of the time, and fortunately, most people here will do 2 to a lane. I personally hate doing circle swim with 3+ people in a lane. They also have kickboards and pull buoys for lap swimmers to use. There are digital clocks around the pool for me to do intervals. The locker rooms are the worst part of this facility. There's no swimsuit drying machine. You have to insert quarters to use a locker. Please allow us to bring our own locks. The shower stalls are a bit cramped but at least they are private. The shower curtains are too narrow, so they leave gaps. Very nice pool. I was comfortable swimming here. read more

The pool is constantly being shut down to the public while high-schools and swim-clubs take over to do their things. They get a lot of traffic, so if crowds and little kids isn't your thing, then look for a different gym. To me, Oak Marr is all about the pool. I love the Olympic sized pool and the serious swimmers doing laps. There's also a pretty large jacuzzi and a wading pool for parents with young children. I'm also impressed by the times that the pool is open - 5:30AM-9:30PM on weekdays. (The weekend hours are more limited, since you can only swim in the afternoon.) Admittedly, the cardio/weight room is inferior to most gyms. They have a smaller range of weights, the equipment isn't as new, and the only deadlift is with an assist that limits range of motion. However, I'm willing to put up with this for the convenience of swimming and lifting weights in the same workout. I also really like the atmosphere at Oak Marr. Sure, the walls are made out of cinder blocks, but I like that there's always people around. On a Friday night at 9PM, there were people playing chess in a rec room. On a Saturday afternoon, there's parents lounging on the couches while their kids attend classes. Oak Marr has flexible options for joining at pretty reasonable prices. If you don't think you'll use a membership for a full year, you can join for just 4 months, or even just buy 25 passes that can be used over a long period of time. For families who just want to walk in, they offer a very good price - $16 for a family consisting of 2 adults and 2 children. Oak Marr may be a good fit for you if: -You like lap swimming. -Early class times work better for you. -You play racquetball. -You're a family looking to do a walk-in gym visit. Note: To the extent this affects your decision to buy a 1 year membership at Oak Marr, I heard that Fairfax County is planning to open a rec center right by the new Metro West subdivision by the Vienna metro. At Oak Marr, I mostly just participated in the evening swim classes. I think that they have a very nice pool, locker room and sauna. I've tried the whirlpool as well --not bad. The instructors were all very helpful and seemed to really enjoy teaching. The pool can get pretty crowded but I found that after about 7 pm (during the week) there is enough "free" space for those wanting to come in for open swim. Although I don't use any of the other parts of the facility, it always look clean and organized. I still have yet to make a Farmers Market here (Wednesdays) and I can't wait to see what it looks like after they complete the rennovations. This place is DIRTY. I just came back from an out patient procedure and from the assesment, I got a staph infection from their gym. This means their equipment is not cleaned regularly and a lot of the patrons don't bother to wipe them down when they are done. Also, during my last visit, the women's locker room was completely out of toilet paper, someone hocked a loogie in the water fountain outside the gym and ALL of their vending machines were broken. The showers constantly have hair in them and no one follows the "Dont be naked" in the sauna, rule. I'm very disappointed in this place and now I'm in pain from having this infection that could have been avoided if their staff did their jobs. They need to stop hiring 15 year olds who don't want to get off their butts and would rather gossip at the front desk and replace them with responsible adults. read more

While I have had the pleasure of going here for Parktakes classes for several years, I have now made the leap to gym membership here. One of the driving factors was that they have childcare. While Lifetime and Xsport also have childcare facilities, they cost almost twice as much as the county rec centers. The pool facilities appear to be the oldest in the building. The locker rooms can be cramped at times and always FREEZING. Getting out of the pool (which can be cold to warm depending on the day), walking over to the locker room, and opening that door to that icy blast is not for the faint of heart. Unlike other area gyms which generally have lots of 20 and 30-somethings, this is blue hair central with me being half the age of many of my fellow gym compatriots. This creates an interesting dynamic i.e. Is Grandpa doing more weight than me (answer: yes, he is). I've been very pleased that everyone is courteous and wipes down machines after each use. They have plenty of wipe stations so you don't have to go far. You will need to bring your own towel though as they don't provide any. Lockers are also a bit different. There are quarter-operated lockers next to the pool, but the area next to the gym only has open cubbies. There is sometimes a person at the desk across from the cubbies, but often not. I can't say that it's a secure set up. They did say that they are installing cameras. I haven't done any of the classes as they aren't generally my thing, but the options seem good. read more

This summer I took Pilates at Oak Marr. I had previously taken Pilates twice before from a great instructor at the Cub Rub RECenter, so I thought I knew what to expect. Instead of personalized instruction, customizing the Pilates moves to each of our capabilities and physical limitations (e.g., my previous back injury), we had barely any instruction at all. Instead, most of the class time involved the instructor telling us all about her unusual health beliefs and her personal life. It is very hard to relax and concentrate on the Pilates movements when someone is talking about testing their own urine every day to check its pH level, or the death of their father. Or taking their dog to a psychologist. I would have been OK if the Pilates routine had been standard (like the classes I'd taken before or the videos I'd tried), but it consisted mostly of stretching and light weights. Pilates elements like the Hundred just aren't part of this class. So I wasn't familiar with most of the poses or moves, and I ended up aggravating an old back injury during the third class. It is frustrating to hurt yourself, probably because of bad form, when the whole reason you took the class in the first place was to have an instructor giving guidance on form. I could have just stayed at home and done a Pilates video, and gotten a better and arguably safer workout. Another aggravation was that we had to shut our cell phones off completely, not just silence them. This was because the instructor said that she could feel EMF radiation from cell phones. I don't even know where to start with that, but the amount of pseudoscience that the instructor promotes in class is alarming, especially from a fitness professional. Class always started late, too, nearly 20 minutes late the last time I went. I work full-time and don't have the luxury of sitting around for 10 minutes while the whole class signs a greeting card for someone who none of us have met. Most of my fellow students had taken this class previously and seemed to think that the instructor was great. I don't get it. I have left the class and requested a refund for the remaining sessions. I definitely won't be returning to Oak Marr. read more

4.5 Stars. I've been coming to this place almost my entire life, ever since the 1st grade. The facilities are always very clean and nice. The pool is huge and there is plenty of room to swim or just mess around if you so choose. They have classes that you can take or fun stuff for the kids. Speaking of kids, the diving boards are always fun to watch when some hotshot 10 year old performs a belly flop of epic proportions. The locker rooms are very clean as are the showers. The gym is pretty nice and I don't think the equipment is that old. Racquetball is always a fun (and tiring) way to spend some of your Saturday or after work time. I've never done anything that made my butt cheeks sore in my life other than racquetball. Overall, it is a great place and doesn't cost a lot. Check it out! read more

I wouldn't recommend going here as the lifeguards in charge rarely wear their masks correctly and they are generally fairly rude. On my visit last Saturday then one of the lifeguards said, out loud, they had a fever and they tested positive with COVID along with another visitor within that week. Why had they been let in if they had a fever? The lights on the deep end of the pool also need replacing as they aren't very bright and most of them are out, with one that flashes a lot. I have also been kicked out just a few minutes after I got there because they were closing, when I had just been let in by the front desk. read more

Great place for classes! I take Pilates and Zumba with Debbie. I used to take Cycle Core but it was too strenuous for a baby boomer like me! They facility is in the midst of a 3.2 million dollar renovation, adding more rooms for classes and gym equipment and improving the layout. When the renovation is complete, (which won't be until July, 2014) those folks who use the weight room will be back and parking will be worst . . . again! Ugh! By the way, if there is a swim meet at the center (only on the Weekend) and your class is still being held, better get there early (real early) or be prepared to park across the street in one of the office building parking lots. So far I only use the pool, so my perspective is limited, but if you're a swimmer considering either Oak Marr or the Reston Y, Oak Marr is so much better. The Y is good, but it has fewer lanes and most are usually reserved for classes, water aerobics, or swim team. As a morning swimmer, I look for lanes between 8AM and 9:30 so I can get in a swim before work. At the Y I found that half the lanes were given over to water aerobics during these hours. Oak Marr, however, has about 4 separate sections, one for classes, one for lap swim, one for water aerobics, and a beach area. It's just huge. The locker rooms are really nice - showers hot and powerful. Private dressing rooms are available too. Where the Y does a bit better is allowing you to use your own padlock, supplying towels, and providing hair driers. Once you get used to carrying quarters with you to Oak Marr it's not so bad. The larger lockers cost $.50 and the small $.25, so if you need to use one lock to secure your stuff while you're swimming and another to get at your shower stuff while keeping the other locked, that works a little better. As far as price, you can't beat Oak Marr. The Y was $70 per month, but Oak Marr offers a monthly passes, a package of 25, and a huge discount if you purchase a membership in January (about $600 for the year). Also, you get a Fairfax County membership which you can use at ANY facility in the county. Update: The pool was closed for a month from about mid-August to mid-September and it's in really great shape now. If I have one complaint during my first year of using the facility, it's that it seems to be closed a lot. For someone who only uses the pool, the summer closure was an entire month out of my yearly membership. Also, during the summer months the lap lanes are limited after 8AM because of swim lessons. One thing that irritates me about most places is that they close the pools for entire days or weekends for private rentals - swim meets, and won't allow members to use the pool at all during those times. If we're paying to use the pool, we shouldn't be restricted just because of a private rental. They do a decent job updating the online calendars, so read them carefully or you'll be disappointed when you get there and find the lanes closed. It's great that they post notes on the doors, but if you haven't been swimming all week and you show up on a day of a swim meet after checking the online calendar which is not up-to-date, it's a bummer. Probably it's a good idea to have a back-up plan if you're a swimmer. Pack clothes for the gym in case the pool is too crowded or unavailable. read more

Just moved to the area (from another part of Ffx Cnty). Looking for a new gym, so I bought the 30 days for $30 special to try it out. Location is great for me and compared to other rec centers in Ffx, it is pretty new. I don't think there is an actual "gymnasium" -- like a basketball court. Haven't seen it. The cardio equipment is o.k., but only 1/2 or less have their own tv screen. That is a big negative for me. The ones that do have the screens don't have all the same channels available (i.e. CNN on one machine's screen, but not programmed in on another). Ok., so the weights are similar brand to what I had at LA Fitness, but they are the "discount" version. By that, I mean they don't adjust in all the places that they should to get a good fit. No face-down hamstring machine, etc., Just pretty limited, but usable. LOTS of seniors here. I mean older seniors. I decided to try out a class. Seems they don't have much yoga in the morning, but I thought "Pure Stretch" would be a good substitute. Well, the teacher announces that she doesn't allow cell phone to be on AT ALL. Not even on vibrate. I said I wanted to be able to get a call from my kids' school if they were sick or something. She said no. I totally understand wanting all cell phones to be off the ring setting. But, I've never seen a teacher with a problem with "vibrate." I was on my way out b/c this is a deal breaker for me. I also heard her say something about how people have sensitivities to smells so ... (she was telling people not to wear fragrances or lotions or something). Note that this class was 80% or more seniors. This teacher may be the same one noted by another reviewer 2-3 year prior (see below). When I spoke to management about the "no cell at all" policy, he indicated that this teacher had doctors letters about her sensitivities and she wouldn't tolerate any tvs outside of the classroom either. Seems like this teacher (who teachers the majority of the weekday classes), is not really able to be in a PUBLIC setting. At any rate, with the prohibition on getting emergency notifications from kids' schools, the lack of tv monitors on the majority of cardio machines and the low-end weight machines .... (and a price that is on the high side of all gyms in the area).... I think I will get a membership elsewhere. I would like to support the county services... but, this doesn't meet industry standards. read more

I belong to the Fairfax County Rec Centers and yesterday decided to try out Oak Marr as it's on the way home from my work. I was disappointed. I usually go to Audrey Moore/Wakefield and their cardio room is pretty complete with plenty of new equipment. The selection at Oak Marr wasn't that great. The elliptical I used had duct tape wrapped around it so it had obviously seen some better days. I would definitely choose Audrey Moore over Oak Marr for going to the gym. read more

We brought my 6 month old here for her first dip in a pool. They have a beach entrance into a wading area which is great. But the pool water was cold even though the pool is supposed to be heated. I tried the deeper pool area too and the water was still cold. So I'm not sure if it's really heated or if I don't know what a heated pool feels like. Lockers in the locker room require quarters, and there isn't a bathing suit dryer. I think I'm spoiled coming from Loudoun County and Claude Moore in Sterling - which is a beautiful center with an awesome kids area in their pool (including slides and a huge wading area). But Oak Marr is close to our house and the pool is fine. We will continue to come here. read more

This is the best recreation center that I have been to in the MD/VA area. It's a multilevel recreation center that has a good sized gym and pools. They have two separate sides, one for leisure swimming and a water slide for children, while the other side has pools for laps and diving. This is a really impressive center that is well kept and clean overall. The changing rooms and bathrooms are decent and pretty clean most of the time. The only downfall is that it gets overly crowded and can be very hard to swim. The front desk is friendly and very helpful. It's easy to navigate and they offer a great selection of classes for kids and adults. If you can come when it's not crowded, you will have a great time. read more

This is a decent fitness facility for a good rate. I used to belong here when I was a grad student, and the student rate is far lower than gym memberships available anywhere else. The fitness room is small, though it has pretty good equipment. The pool area is large, and the facility also offers a pretty good selection of fitness classes included in the regular membership. This facility does not provide towels like other Fairfax County Recreation facilities! I did not discover that until I arrived with my children and expected the same service as the other Fairfax County Rec centers like Cub Rub. read more

Four stars because I rarely give anything five stars. Not sure what all the whining by other reviewers is about -- the facility is clean, staff helpful, the cost reasonable. I've been a member for five or six years, though I rarely use the pool. The fitness center is just great. Not all the treadmills have TVs, but I go there to work out, not watch THE VIEW. The weight machines and weight room are great -- nice selection of machines, benches, weight stations, etc. If I could change anything, it would be to ban cell phone use in exercise areas. Most people use theirs for music (on headphones), but occasionally some doofus will decide to have a half-hour conversation. Tip: Twice a year, the facility offers a pass sale where you can buy a membership at a discount. Yes, there are lots of older people, but the kinds of customers varies - in the morning there are working people getting their exercise in before work. Late morning and afternoon, housewives and seniors. Around 2:30 or so, the high school kids start coming in. Don't know what it's like in the evening because I've never been. read more

The facility is great! The life guards aren't. The price to take your kid swimming for a couple hours is pricey in my book. It's 8 dollars. The life guards are probably highschool or college students with no common sense. Very uptight with the rules. A 2 year old kid can't be expected to know the 554 different rules to follow in order to use the pool. read more
