My husband wanted to treat me to what he said was the best burger in the Madison area. He goes there with work colleagues for lunch, once in a while. He took me to Oakcrest Tavern. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Saturday. It isn't very large inside, but it has a rustic vibe and had a quaint feel. There is a small dining area to the left of the bar. The bar area is on the smaller side. Immediately a staff member came over to ask what we would like. We ordered two Badger club beers, and cheese curds. The cheese curds came out popping hot, and were very delicious, not greasy, and the best ones I have had so far, in the area. They use white cheddar in their curds. We ordered two medium rare bacon cheeseburgers, with lettuce, tomato and onions. Also, because my husband is an appetizer freak, he ordered onion rings. The onion rings arrived first, and were hot and not greasy, and had a nice crunch. I will admit I am not a big onion ring fan, but they were quite good. Our burgers arrived next, and oh my, they were large. The burger is six ounces and is made with extra lean ground beef and steak trimmings, which is ground daily by the Oakcrest staff. I do admit, that our burgers did end up well done, and I could predict it, as the cooking area was beyond where we were sitting, and it took longer than I expected, but they made it right in the end. The burgers had a nice tasteful char on them, and the steak trimmings they add to the burger, takes it up a notch. The atmosphere was quaint and comforting, the staff was awesome, and the customers were also very friendly. We heard a lot about their fish fry, so we will return later to give it a try.

Oakcrest Tavern is the *real-deal* Wisconsin Fish Fry. This is authentic as fish-fries get - I don't think the OT has changed much since your Grandpa ate there waaay back when. [est. 1950] The service was classic WI - friendly and beverages with a 'healthy' pour. The atmosphere is Wisco Northwoods, this spot could be anywhere Up North as they say. It is not big inside, and there can be a wait, but you should definitely give this spot a try.

A cozy local place with fantastic food with non-touristy prices. I had the burger which is 6oz and perfectly cooked medium. I also had amazing onion rings, which were thick sweet onions with a nice batter made to order. We watched them batter the rings. My wife had the perch fish fry since it was Friday. A huge order that she couldn't finish with nice crispy fires. The coleslaw that comes with it is really tasty not over dressed and twice those little portions that you get elsewhere. It's a bit off the beaten path but well worth the visit. We'll be back the next time we're in town.

Two regular burgers, our way, and some fries!

Delicious local spot -- great beer and burgers. I thought the cheese curds were some of the best I've had in the city. I can see this becoming a go-to spot for many.

Solid Wednesday night fish fry. Perch was on point and the serving size generous. Oakcrest is an institution. A neighborhood and locals joint. Drinks are good to boot.

ALMOST perfect. Walked in and it is a seat yourself kind of place. Bar was full at 5 pm on a Wednesday but plenty of tables open. Fast service right when we sat down and got drinks and appetizers ordered. The old fashioneds were a strong pour and delish! The cheese curds were some of the best I've ever had. Top 5. Ordered food with another couple. They got their food and we waited another 15ish minutes for ours. Seems the kitchen had forgot our order. We split a cod dinner. Was disappointed to see we got charged for extra fries even though we didn't ask for them. Maybe that's the charge for splitting a meal but would've been nice to be informed. Cod was pretty good but the perch we tried from our friends meal was AMAZING. definitely recommend the perch. The batter on the fish is outstanding. Overall would go back to have the fish again. Be sure to arrive early! Place was packed when we left around 6:30.

A neighborhood institution. Food is good, atmosphere great. I can't really say anything bad about this place.

Some of the best dive bar burgers in Madison (even after the closing of Knoche's Butcher Shop). Friendly staff. Great neighbor bar.

We had a very enjoyable meal. This time, it was just an answer to, 'let's go somewhere for dinner.' And, we had another good experience. I love love the casual atmosphere. The cheese curds were well coated and seasoned. Fried to perfection. The buttermilk ranch was a perfect complement. The chicken bacon ranch salad was plentiful, loaded with stuff. Enough salad for 2. I thoroughly enjoyed by Great Lakes Walleye. Lightly coated with potato flakes and fried to light, flaky, flavorful perfection. The the lemon herb cream sauce gives it just the right pop. A totally enjoyable dish. On the side, I also like the selection of craft beers. This is my new favorite place to eat!

The fish and chips--chips were cooked to perfection but the tartar sauce and fish were just ok. I commented that they basically tasted like nothing. Our servers were attentive and friendly and service was quick. The ambiance was nice--easy conversational place. If it had been warmer, they have a fantastic seating area outside. Inside there is very little room in the host/check-in table area and we constantly felt like we were in the way when other parties came in.

I recently came here some coworkers and was…read morevery skeptical... everything on the menu sounds so heavy and "midwest" as I'm not from the area. But, I think that is the point. The items I tried were really tasty, despite being quite filling/heavy/rich. I enjoyed the meatloaf and pork schnitzel (definitely not an expert on this dish but it was so juicy inside and crispy on the outside w/ a really thin batter). Loved adding the mushroom gravy on top. We also got the onion rings while in the bar and enjoyed those. I had a draft beer from Potosi Brewing (local to WI) and enjoyed that a lot too. Our server was a little gruff but was pretty attentive. Ambiance is pretty interesting as it's a super old building, so very unique. Definitely don't come here for a light, healthy meal and probably not best for a vegetarian either. I wish we had come for fish Friday as I've heard great things! Definitely a fun Wisconsin experience :)

This is supposed to be the fine dining restaurant of the two on site, but I've always had a much better meal and experience at The Stable. At least there you get the casual dining experience. First thing happens we get put at a table oddly in the middle of the room next to a table of 8 with 3 kids under 5. Right away I knew our fine dining experience would suffer. The server had blue jeans and a Brewers shirt on which put another touch to the whole experience. Anyway on to dinner. Started off with appetizers of a cup of beer cheese soup for my wife, while I had the flamkutchen (a flatbread with onion cream, bacon and carmelized onions. The soup was pronounced fine by my wife and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't say the same about mine. It was more of a cracker than flatbread. And the "carmelized" onions were barely cooked. They were almost raw. Meanwhile the bacon was cooked to within an inch of its life. I really should have sent it back. For the main meal, my wife got schweinshaxe and I got winerschnitzel. Her pork shank was actually quite good but her sides were so so. Same with my sides of warm potato salad and sliced apples. I don't know why but no substitutions were allowed on the sides, I would have liked spatzle but that was served with another entree and they wouldn't swap that out for the potato salad. At the stable you get a choice of sides but not at the fine dining stonehouse. My veal cutlet was over cooked and a strange shape. It was also tough as shoe leather. I'm not sure it was even veal as I've never had tough veal EVER. Very disappointed. Dessert was apple strudel and Black Forest cheesecake. My "strudel" was a microwaved apple turnover with some Carmel sauce and whipped cream. Tough as heck as all microwaved pastries are. The cheesecake was OK, more "cake" than cheesy but OK. I'm done with The Stonehouse. This is like the 3rd time I've eaten there and it's never been very good. I'll go to The Stable for fish again as it's a fun place to eat and has better food and a better vibe. If I want good German food I guess I'll cook at home.
